Built at the turn of the twentieth century, the Thiel Gallery is one of Europe s most meticulously designed art galleries. The architecture and interior design of the beautiful original building, and the art collection it houses, form a unique whole that expresses the longing for radical new ideals that prevailed around 1900. Since the 1920s, the Thiel Gallery has also been one of Sweden s foremost museums of art. This book is the first to tell the full story behind the gallery created by Ernest Thiel, the financier and art collector. It offers insights into the history of art, architecture, garden design and philosophy, and we learn about the lives of leading cultural figures and the zeitgeist at the dawn of the twentieth century. The authors are all leading specialists in their fields, and the many illustrations and photos bring the reader closer to the museum and its founder.

Thielska Galleriet är en av de mest genomarbetade konstmiljöerna från sekelskiftet 1900 i Europa. Arkitekturen, inredningen och konsten i den vackra och originella byggnaden samverkar på ett unikt sätt till ett uttryck för tidens längtan efter nya radikala ideal. Sedan 1920-talet har Thielska Galleriet dessutom varit ett av Sveriges mest framträdande konstmuseer. I detta verk ges för första gången en helhetsbild av finansmannen och konstsamlaren Ernest Thiels skapelse. Vi möter här fördjupningar i konstvetenskap, arkitektur- och trädgårdshistoria och filosofi, och vi får inblickar i ledande kulturpersonligheters livsöden och ingångar till tidsandan vid förra sekelskiftet. Författarna är alla framstående specialister inom respektive område och det generösa bildmaterialet bidrar till att läsaren kommer nära museet och dess grundare. Patrik Steorn är docent i konstvetenskap och museichef på Göteborgs konstmuseum. Patrik Steorn har främst forskat om svensk och nordisk konst och visuell kultur runt sekelskiftet 1900 och har även forskat och undervisat i modevetenskap på Stockholms universitet. Han var intendent och museichef för Thielska galleriet i Stockholm 2014-2020.

Cute animals, fluffy clouds, blood, sex and pleasure...surreal watercolors executed in rapid brushstrokes, almost like comic panels. At first glance it looks Cussols paintings appear to be made by a schoolgirl. It's birdie cards, colorful handbags, ruffled dresses and fluffy clouds with eyes and mouth. But if you look closer, the content becomes multilayered, uncomfortable and confusing. The women in the paintings behave not as expected. This book is published in conjunction with her exhibition at the Spritmuseum in Stockholm.
