Das Buch behandelt Datenverwaltungskonzepte fur verteilte Systeme. Neben bereits bekannten Konzepten wird ein neuer Losungsansatz vorgestellt und bewertet. Er zielt darauf ab, Anwendungswissen in die Datenverwaltung einfliessen zu lassen, um eine effiziente Datenverwaltung in verteilten Systemen aufzubauen. Zunachst werden die Grundlagen und Voraussetzungen der verteilten Datenverwaltung diskutiert (Rechnerhardware, Betriebssysteme, Kommunikationssysteme). Anschliessend wird ein neuartiges Verwaltungskonzept vorgeschlagen, wobei streng zwischen Datenhaltung und Datenverteilung unterschieden wird. Diese Neukonzeption zeichnet sich insbesondere aus durch die Moglichkeit der Integration bestehender Datenverwaltungssysteme, das breite Anwendungsspektrum und die Einbeziehung von Anwendungswissen.
