Neben neuen und vertiefenden Erkenntnissen in diesem Themenfeld wird nicht nur in das Konzept der ethnischen Offenheit eingeführt, sondern es werden hierzu auch Ergebnisse geliefert. Es wird thematisiert, was diese Heterogenität sowie die sonstige Diversität in den Peer-Netzwerken der Jugendlichen für die alltäglichen Aushandlungsprozesse und Verhaltensweisen bedeutet. Die Einblicke in die untersuchten Sozialräume beschränken sich hierbei nicht auf einen Defizitdiskurs, sondern loten auch deren Potenziale aus und fokussieren auf das Interaktionsgeschehen vor Ort und außerhalb.

This book presents a comparative look at the norms and attitudes related to youth violence. It aims to present a perspective outside of the typical Western context, through case studies comparing a developed / Western democracy (Germany), a country with a history of institutionalized violence (South Africa), and an emerging democracy that has experienced heavy terrorism (Pakistan). Building on earlier works, the research presented in this innovative volume provides new insights into the sociocultural context for shaping both young people's tolerance of and involvement in violence, depending on their environment. This volume covers: Research on interpersonal violence. Thorough review of the contribution of research on gangs, violence, neighborhoods and community. Diese Studie begeht einen neuen Weg zur Erklärung von Devianz und Gewalt im Jugendalter, indem sie versucht, zwei soziologische Ansätze, die Theorie Sozialer Desintegration und die Control Balance Theory, miteinander zu verknüpfen. Es geht um die Frage der Realitätskontrolle über eigene Lebenswege aufgrund der Bedingungen in den verschiedenen Sozialisationsfeldern von Schule, Familie und Peers. Die leitende These der empirischen Untersuchung besagt, dass das Zusammenwirken von Anerkennungsdefiziten und Imbalancen von Kontrolle die Wahrscheinlichkeit von Devianz und Gewalt erhöht.

Der Titel des Buches stammt nicht von Horst Schimanski, dem Tatort-Kri- nalkommissar in Diensten der Duisburger Polizei, sondern von einem wirklichen Polizisten aus der Duisburger Szene. Der Titel könnte allerdings den Leser zu der Vermutung verführen, dass hier die Rückkehr der britischen Rockband The Police gefeiert werden soll, der trotz simpel anmutender Kompositionen immer wieder hochgradige Musikalität nachgesagt wird. Der Untersuchungsgegenstand der vorliegenden Studie legt sogar einen Vergleich mit der Rockband nahe: Nicht auf die Bühne und ihr setting kommt es an, sondern auf die Musik. Sie allein zählt. Nicht zuletzt lässt sich daraus eine wichtige Empfehlung für die Polizei im Umgang mit ethnischen Minderheiten und sozialen Randgruppen ableiten, wie wir an verschiedenen Stellen zeigen werden: bei der Herausbildung der jeweiligen cop culture ebenso wie bei den einzelnen Gruppen, die mit der Polizei in Berührung kommen. Dass die Polizei die Aufgabe hat, die Bürger vor Schaden zu schützen und ungesetzliche Handlungen zu verhindern, ist selbstverständlich. Nicht so selb- verständlich ist es, die Aufgabe der Polizei darin zu sehen, als Organ der Me- heitsgesellschaft kulturelle Selbstverständlichkeiten über den Weg der Gesetze und die Methoden der sozialen Kontrolle zu sichern. In jedem Fall hat die Polizei mit den Lebensweisen von ethnischen Minderheiten und sozialen Randgruppen zu tun, die Ausdruck kultureller Differenz sind und zuweilen Be- und Entfr- dung oder gar Angst bei den Einheimischen bzw. „Normalbürgern“ hervorrufen. Das lässt Ausländer und Außenseiter nicht selten zu Fremden werden und öfter mit der Polizei in Kontakt kommen.

Die deutsche Gewaltforschung dreht sich seit Jahren im Kreis, da sie immer wieder die gleichen Ursachenmodelle untersucht und zu gleichen Ergebnissen kommt. Ausgehend von der neuen Tradition der Soziologie der Gewalt wird den Prozessen der Gewalt nachgegangen: Wie entsteht sie? Wie lauft sie ab? Was passiert anschliessend? Anhand qualitativer Interviews beschreibt der Autor am Beispiel der jungen Russlanddeutschen die Regeln der Strassenkultur und entwickelt eine Typologie, um das Konfliktverhalten der Heranwachsenden zu klassifizieren. Ausgehend von dieser Typologie und seinen weiteren Ergebnissen entwickelt er Handlungsvorschlage fur eine effektive Praventionsarbeit mit Jugendlichen aus der Strassenkultur.
