The Alchemy Press Book of the Dead 2020 celebrates the careers more than 450 individuals who made significant contributions to the horror, science fiction and fantasy genres during their lifetimes. Compiled by award-winning writer and editor Stephen Jones, this first volume in a new annual series includes tributes to a trio of Hollywood legends . . . possibly the last star of silent pictures . . . the screen's best James Bond . . . a pair of British actresses who were both "Bond girls" and Avengers . . . two British actors who played-but did not voice-iconic Star Wars characters . . . an author who did for crustaceans what James Herbert did for rodents . . . and a forgotten pioneer of "sword and soul" fantasy . . . all illustrated with numerous photographs and associated images. This is not only a welcome reference volume, but also an informative and entertaining tribute to those we lost in 2020 and who left their mark on books, movies and popular culture in unusual and often fascinating ways.

When Stephen Jones felt the urge to take a look at the world before settling into a humdrum job in West London, he decided to apply to become a VSO volunteer in Zambia. That experience opened his eyes to life beyond Uxbridge, and fed a wanderlust which would never leave him. He went on to spend the best part of 30 years working on overseas projects, mostly in developing countries. This afforded him the opportunity to learn about the fascinating people, cultures, politics, agriculture and much more of these far-flung places, while seeking viable development schemes funded by international aid agencies. This book is an enlightening and entertaining account of his adventures in more than 70 countries, from Nigeria to Nepal and from Afghanistan to Chile, Pakistan and Russia.

Under the direction of the renowned milliner Stephen Jones, who has been working with Dior since 1996, this book explores Dior s relationship with the art and craft of creating hats. Christian Dior himself, who began his career by designing headpieces, wrote in his Little Dictionary of Fashion: A hat is essential to any outfit. It completes it. In a way, a hat is the best way to express your personality. Published on the occasion of the 2020 exhibition at the Musee Christian Dior in Granville, France, this sophisticated illustrated volume celebrates more than 70 years of exquisite creations. Opening with a focus on hats designed by the legendary couturier Christian Dior, the book develops to include the headdress created by the house over the years, exploring its pieces by styles, shapes, and inspirations from floral and exotic to masculine, traditional, or romantic. Dior hats have always been expressions of sophistication, from the first millineries that were part of the New Look silhouette, to the Venetian masks imagined by Yves Saint Laurent, the exquisite toques by Marc Bohan, the dramatic boaters by Gianfranco Ferre, the flamboyant and extravagant realizations by John Galliano, the graphic neck bow by Raf Simons, and the romantic designs by Maria Grazia Chiuri. Stephen Jones reviews such fashion history and reflects on his prolific relationship with the house. His insightful texts are accompanied by contributions by fashion specialists Alexander Fury, Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni, and Florence Muller, and enlivened by drawings and photographs from Dior s archives, shots by the most famed fashion photographers of the last decades, such as Richard Avedon, Erwin Blumenfeld, Mario Testino, and special, never-before-published images by Solve Sundsbo.

In April 1936, Lovecraft’s novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth was first published. Written five years earlier, but oddly rejected by every magazine it was ever submitted to, it accurately described a series of events that actually happened in February 1928, when federal government agents raided the ancient Massachusetts seaport of Innsmouth and attempted to eradicate a deviant race of ichthyoid creatures which had been interbreeding with the human population for decades, if not centuries. There was no way that the reclusive pulp writer could have known so much about a case where the details had been withheld for fear of creating a panic among the public. Following these startling revelations, the F. B. I. went back and investigated more closely into the stories that Lovecraft was publishing as “fiction.” Incredibly, it soon began to emerge that the events in Innsmouth were not a solitary event—and the monstrosities the author described really did exist. To combat these cosmic horrors, the Human Protection League (H. P. L.) was established to investigate and combat these otherworldly invaders. Down through the decades since, the only defense that has stood between humanity and these creatures of chaos are the agents of the H. P. L.—or, as they are sometimes known to those few who are aware of their existence: The Lovecraft Squad.

This book explores the climate policy approaches established by various city governments. It details the strategies, plans and initiatives that have so far been designed to both mitigate and adapt to the impacts of global warming. In doing so, it considers the implications of the actions taken by leading cities and its effects on underlying theoretical assumptions relating to policy development and management processes in achieving climate policy outcomes. Cities Responding to Climate Change establishes an analytical framework that critically examines the application of performance management by city governments in their policy responses to climate change. It draws its focus on the city governments of Copenhagen, Stockholm and Tokyo to bring together and discuss the concepts, strategies and practices that have since been introduced to respond to the climate challenges faced. This book highlights the lessons to be learned by other city governments around the world contemplating serious action with climate policies to lessen the impacts of global warming. It will be of particular interest to practitioners and researchers seeking evidence of how governments deliver on their commitments and improve their effectiveness in implementing climate polices.
