This book presents practical discussions of best practice techniques for job development along with reproducible forms for use in the field. The purpose of the book is to systematize the job development process by sharing replicable processes for transition-aged youth and adults with significant support needs and illustrating several urban and rural approaches to creative employment (including self-employment as an alternate strategy) that blend funding streams, utilize SSA Work Incentives, and capitalize on the hidden jobs in small neighborhood companies that are often overlooked in favor of large companies.

The second edition of Revitalizing Criminological Theory is a substantial revision and expansion of the first edition. Ultra-realism is a unique school of criminological thought currently establishing itself in the discipline despite resistance from traditional schools. The second edition still provides the undergraduate and postgraduate student reader with an invaluable guide to existing schools of thought and their roots in politics and philosophy, but with updated commentary on their intellectual flaws. In the first edition, Hall and Winlow introduced a number of important new concepts that laid the foundations for an alternative theoretical framework and research programme in criminology. In three additional chapters written specially for this edition, they introduce further concepts and substantive revisions to the theoretical framework. They also outline and discuss in detail the growing body of award-winning criminological projects conducted by a new generation of researchers who have adopted and mobilised ultra-realist thinking over the past ten years. During this period of time, ultra-realism has also made significant progress towards its primary objectives of understanding human motivations, constructing insightful representations of reality and answering the fundamental zemiological question of why some human beings risk inflicting harm on others to further their own interests or achieve various ends. The philosophical and psychosocial approaches outlined in the first edition are now significantly advanced and able to offer a more detailed answer to this question and a convincing alternative to the traditional paradigms of conservatism, neoclassicism and left liberalism. Ultra-realism is now in a position to make some substantive contributions to the debate on the depth of political intervention required to get serious about reducing the impact of crime and harm on the lives of ordinary people. This book is essential reading for academics and students engaged in the study of criminology, sociology, social psychology, the philosophy of social science and the history of crime.

Death is a topic we often avoid talking about, but in The Death Ship Victoria Brown faces it head on, taking a deep dive into the fate of Titanic’s victims: how did they die? How did their bodies decompose? Were their bodies recovered and buried? What happened to the bodies that went down with the ship? And what of Titanic’s legacy? Here, Brown explores the proposed legislative changes, salvage proposals and surge of interest the wreck received shortly after the disaster, alongside the contemporary controversy surrounding the wreck as a shipwreck versus a gravesite. The Death Ship is a fascinating, at times shocking, examination of the ill-fated souls who tragically lost their lives that day – a crucial but seldom told part of Titanic’s enduring story. It also gives recognition to the people of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada, whose unwavering dedication ensured those who died were properly taken care of.

The left is dead. Its ailments cannot be cured. The only way to resurrect what was once valuable in leftist politics is to declare the left dead and begin from the beginning again. Winlow and Hall identify the root causes of its maladies, describe how new cultural obsessions displaced core unifying principles and explore the yawning chasm that now separates the left from the working class. Drawing upon a wealth of historical evidence to structure their story of entryism, corruption, fragmentation and decline, they close the book by outlining how a new reincarnation of the left can win in the 21st century.

On 15 April 1912, passengers stood on a dimly lit Boat Deck, looking down at the lifeboats they were told to enter. In the freezing air, away from the warmth of the interior, they had to decide whether to enter a boat that would be lowered into darkness or remain on an ‘unsinkable’ ship. RMS Titanic in 50 Objects is a look at the world-famous liner through the objects that tell her story. Sheet music recovered from the body of a musician, a full-sized replica of her First Class Entrance Hall clock, a lifeboat from a fellow White Star Line ship – all of these objects and more come together to tell not only the tragedy of the ship herself, but also that of her passengers and crew. Lavishly illustrated and extensively researched by two of the world’s most foremost Titanic experts, this is her history brought to life like never before.**

Addiction and Substance Use Disorder. We have all heard the terms, but what are they really? What causes them and how can we avoid them? Do you have a friend or loved one struggling with alcohol or drug use? How can you help someone who is struggling with this? How can you help the family members who have also been affected? The key to prevention and recovery is knowledge and understanding. Do you know what the three natural laws of alcohol and drug use are, and how they impact you? Alcohol and drug use have been identified as a disease, what does that really mean and what is the treatment? We take an in-depth look at these issues so you can make better choices when you are looking to consume alcohol or drugs. Steve has experienced the impact of addiction his entire life (over 50 years). His parents were alcoholics, and he has brothers and a sister who suffered from alcoholism and addiction. Steve also helped foster parent three children who had been abused on multiple levels and helped them recover from this abuse over a four-and-a-half-year period. He has attended hundreds of AA (Alcohol Anonymous), NA (Narcotics Anonymous), Adult Children of Alcoholics meetings, and church-based recovery programs. He has done extensive research on the causes of substance abuse (addiction) and the recovery process.

Our own stories are shaped by the way we see the world. Another set of lenses is a book about relationships. The relationship we have with ourselves. The relationship we have with others. The relationship we have with the world around us. Stories surround us everywhere and the heroes and heroines of those stories are right with us in every walk of life. If we choose to look for them they will appear, yet it takes a different kind of looking. If we look at a familiar world with new eyes, we will see these extraordinary people and the lessons they quietly teach us in their everyday living. When we see through the eyes of the other and find some balance in the view through these differing lenses, we gain clarity and understanding. Is there any better way to build a world together?

The shock Brexit result highlighted a worrying trend: underemployed white men and women who have seen their standard of living fall, their communities disintegrate and their sense of value, function and inclusion diminish, desperately want a mainstream political party to defend their interests. However, no such party exists. These men and women cannot connect their declining fortunes and growing frustrations to their true cause. Instead, immigrants are scapegoated and groups like the English Defence League (EDL) emerge. This book is the first to offer an accessible and uncompromising look at the EDL. It aims to alter thinking about working-class politics and the rise of right-wing nationalism in the de-industrialised and decaying towns and cities of England. The rise of the right among the working class, the authors claim, is inextricably connected to the withdrawal of the political left from traditional working-class communities, and the left’s refusal to advance the economic interests of those who have suffered most from neoliberal economic restructuring. Incisive, contentious and boundary-breaking, it uses the voices of men and women who now support far-right political groups to address the total failure of mainstream parliamentary politics and the rising tide of frustration, resentment and anger.

The story of RMS Titanic resonates all around the world, the vessel immortalised on stage, screen and in print. This collection of drawings does not dwell on the tragedy that befell this magnificent ship, but rather seeks to showcase her great beauty, representing the pinnacle of a grand era of style and innovation, with experts Steve Hall and Bruce Beveridge providing insight and commentary. Colouring these scenes of Titanic’s hope-filled early days at sea, sumptuous interiors and grand promenades will breathe life into a bygone age of luxury, opulence and transatlantic adventure. Suitable for children.

The largest, most luxurious ship in the world, lost on her maiden voyage after colliding with an iceberg in mid-Atlantic, Titanic has become the stuff of legends. Built at the peak of the race between the British, French and Germans to build bigger and better ships, she was the achievement of 15,000 men in one of the world’s most advanced shipyards. While everyone knows the new White Star liner was the most glamorous and was full of millionaires when she sank, few appreciate just how luxurious she was or how advanced her design was for her day. For the first time, Bruce Beveridge, Scott Andrews, Steve Hall, Daniel Klistorner and Art Braunschweiger look in detail at the ship herself, how she was built and what it was like inside. From the engine rooms to the First Class parlour suites, from the Doulton water closets to the cargo cranes, every area of Titanic is presented in stunning detail. Volume One covers the design and construction of Titanic, with individual chapters detailing such diverse areas as the riveting of the ship, her heating and ventilation systems, funnels, steering and navigation systems and more. Volume Two covers the interior design and fitting out of the ship and presents detailed deck-by-deck information, from the palatial rooms of First Class to areas of the ship seen only by the crew.

The largest, most luxurious ship in the world, wrecked on her maiden voyage after colliding with an iceberg mid-Atlantic, has become the stuff of legends. While everyone knows the new White Star liner was glamorous, full of millionaires when she sank, few appreciate just how luxurious she was. Even in Third Class, the accommodation was better than on First Class on many older ships. For the first time, Bruce Beveridge, Steve Hall, Scott Andrews and Daniel Klistorner look at the construction and exterior of the ship itself, and at her interior design and fittings. From cobalt blue Spode china and Elkington plate silverware in the à la carte restaurant to the design of the boilers and fixtures and fittings on board the world’s most luxurious vessel, they tell the story of a liner built at the peak of the race between the British, French and Germans to build bigger and better ships.

Report into the Loss of the SS Titanic is a complete re-evaluation of the loss of Titanic based on evidence that has come to light since the discovery of the wreck in 1985. This collective undertaking is compiled by eleven of the world’s foremost Titanic researchers – experts who have spent many years examining the wealth of information that has arisen since 1912. Following the basic layout of the 1912 Wreck Commission Report, this modern report provides fascinating insights into the ship itself, the American and British inquiries, the passengers and crew, the fateful journey and ice warnings received, the damage and sinking, rescue of survivors, the circumstances in connection with the SS Californian and SS Mount Temple, and the aftermath and ramifications that followed the disaster. The book seeks to answer controversial questions, such as whether steerage passengers were detained behind gates, and also reveals the names and aliases of all passengers and crew who sailed on Titanic’s maiden voyage. Containing the most extensively referenced chronology of the voyage ever assembled and featuring a wealth of explanatory charts and diagrams, as well as archive photographs, this comprehensive volume is the definitive ‘go-to’ reference book for this ill-fated ship.

A superbly targeted resource for those wanting to learn about serial killings. Deals with and analyses some of the best known (as well as lesser) cases from English criminal history, ancient and modern. Looks at the lifestyles, backgrounds and activities of those who become serial killers. Identifies clear categories of individuals into which most serial killers fall. Led by Professor David Wilson the authors are all experts and practised teachers concerning the ever-intriguing phenomenon of serial killing: why, when and how it happens and whether it can be predicted. Taking some of the leading cases from English law and abroad they demonstrate the patterns that emerge in the lives and backgrounds of those who kill a number of times over a period. The book is aimed at those studying the topic as an academic discipline, whether on one of the many courses now run by institutions or as a serious attempt at private study and understanding. It contains notes on key terms and explanations of essential topics such as co-activation, Munchausen syndrome, cooling-off period, psychopathy checklist, social construction, case linkage, family annihilation, activity space, rational choice theory, medicalization and rendezvous discipline. As the first textbook of its kind it will be an invaluable resource for both teaches and all students of serious crime whether formally or self-taught.

The years 2008 to 2013 saw a new generation of political protestors take to the streets. Riots disrupted many Western cities and new protest movements emerged, keen to address a bleak context of economic collapse and austerity politics. In this groundbreaking new study, Winlow, Hall, Briggs and Treadwell push past the unworldly optimism of the liberal left to offer an illuminating account of the enclosure and vacuity of contemporary politics. Focusing on the English riots of 2011, the ongoing crisis in Greece, the Indignados, 15M and Podemos in Spain, the Occupy movement in New York and London and the English Defence League in northern England, this book uses original empirical data to inform a strident theoretical critique of our post-political present. It asks: what are these protest groups fighting for, and what are the chances of success? Written by leading criminological theorists and researchers, this book makes a major contribution to contemporary debates on social order, politics and cultural capitalism. It illuminates the epochal problems we face today. Riots and Political Protest is essential reading for academics and students engaged in the study of political sociology, criminological theory, political theory, sociological theory and the sociology of deviance.
