DUG, in the vein of Walliams, Pullman and Dahl shows how adults can get stuck in their own narrative and do not recognise their children’s progress in the world. What were amazing, funny and slightly terrifying stories Dug told to his 3-year-old grandson do not stand up to the scrutiny of the 8-year-old child he is now and does, in fact become a big embarrassment! Even though friends, new to the tales Dug relates, find him entertaining, it does his grandson’s street cred no good at all. A cautionary tale – told from the child’s eye – relationships change and adults should recognise and grow with the change. This is a grandad/grandchild tale with a difference.

Each unit covers academic writing, reading, and speaking skills. These steps include searching for quality sources, note-taking, establishing a critical stance, formulating evidence-based arguments, synthesizing information from multiple sources, and structuring academic texts. Each unit also provides opportunities for students to analyse texts, apply their critical thinking skills, practise what they have learnt in productive tasks, and reflect upon their progress. This book is aimed at first-time university students. Many of the readings are related to China and a broader Asian context. As such, it appeals to first-year university students in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan.

Illustrated throughout and with accompanying maps, this book can be used to uncover the routes taken and explore the stories behind those and the actions of the time with proceeds going towards the ongoing work of the charity.

When Washington became the nation s capital in 1790, the surrounding area to the northwest the communities known today as Bethesda and Chevy Chase was devoted almost entirely to agriculture. Many farms were worked by slaves, and one of them, Josiah Henson, escaped to Canada and wrote his life story in 1849. Harriet Beecher Stowe based her novel Uncle Tom s Cabin on Henson s life, and the model for that famous dwelling still stands in Bethesda today. The transition of the region to modern suburbia started with a simple innovation: the trolley. Once lines were built in the 1890s, government employees could live outside the city and commute to work. But, the neighboring towns developed along different lines. Bethesda became a bustling commercial center, while Chevy Chase was created as a planned community featuring elegant homes and country clubs. Even though both border the capital, this book demonstrates how each community has a vibrant heritage and distinct identity of its own."
