Swami Satchidananda

This giftbook (part of the Peter Max cover series) offers inspiring teachings on various aspects of the Guru-disciple or student-teacher relationship--from how to find a qualified outer Guru to discovering your own Guru within. Throughout the history of humankind there have always been human beings who felt there must be more to life than what is offered by the physical, emotional, intellectual and socio-political realms alone. Therefore they sought a higher wisdom or spiritual enlightenment. Many have found themselves in need of someone who has traveled the spiritual path successfully and could guide them toward the understanding they sought. Thus has the Guru and disciple (or spiritual teacher and student) relationship found a place in nearly every spiritual tradition in the world. There have been enlightened teachers or Gurus since the very dawn of time: Hasidic Rabbis of Judaism, Sufi Masters of Islam, Lord Jesus and the long line of mystics and saints in the Christian tradition. the Buddha and all the succeeding Rinpoches, Lamas and Roshis in Buddhism--these are all examples of this important and still living tradition.

Let this book be your companion on the spiritual path, guiding you toward a life of true blessedness. This giftbook is part of the Peter Max cover art series. From the Foreword by Includes a foreword by Br. David Steindl-Rast, OSB: Swami Satchidananda rightly says that all spiritual paths lead to the one Truth. It strains our imagination, but we must even say that taking one path means taking all of them--they are all contained in each. Yet, this will help us not in the least until we set out to make one path our own and follow it. To really follow what Yoga offers us for a deeper understanding of Christian teaching, we must begin to live what Christ teaches. How else should we understand its meaning? Why not let these two spiritual paths--two ways of expression--complement one another? To get at the truth, we must make every effort to understand what the one who used these words wanted to say at the time. The longer ago this was, the greater our difficulty today yet, difficult or not, every statement of truth has to be seen in its context. Yoga--as you will see Swamiji describe in this book--teaches us the same truth found in the Beatitude: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." We can and must affirm how our spiritual traditions enrich each other when viewed from the perspective Swamiji shares with us. We affirm our traditions by a life that remains grateful. In that deep gratitude, which is an essential characteristic of our peak moments, we experience one common denominator to all the spiritual paths: that we can't wrap up the light in a package; but we can walk in the light.

One's whole life is an obstacle course. The more obstacles you overcome, the bigger the prize. If you avoid the obstacles, then there is no prize. Without those obstacles, you would never discover your capabilities. So instead of cursing the obstacles on your path, or the people who placed them there, try to find ways that will help you face them and overcome them. And when you do, a great joy will arise within you and you will bless the obstacles instead of cursing them. This quote from Overcoming Obstacles captures the flavor of total positive thinking with which Swami Satchidananda teaches us to approach life's inevitable challenges and convert all to opportunities for victory, fun, fulfillment, and joy. Overcoming Obstacles is full of practical and priceless guidance.

These daily inspirational readings contain Swami Satchidananda's teachings on the spiritual life"how to serve others and realize peace, truth, and union with the divine. Culled from twenty-five years of lectures to spiritual seekers in the West and the East, these readings are expressed with the simplicity and authority of one who speaks from his own experience. What is purity of heart? It's a heart full of tranquility and peace. Having a steady mind, a balanced mind, is what you call purity of heart. You must be well balanced between the dualities: the ups and downs, the pleasure and pain, the profit and loss. If the mind is free from turbulence, then the seer can see its own nature. If your heart is pure and steady, you can see God reflected in that steady heart.

Sri Swami Satchidananda gives a remarkably thorough overview of the various techniques of meditation in relatively few pages. The booklet describes the use of mantras, yantras, and specific breathing practices.
