Teolinda Gersao

Take Six is a celebration of six remarkable Portuguese women writers: Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Agustina Bessa-Lu s, Maria Judite de Carvalho, H lia Correia, Teolinda Gers o and L dia Jorge. They are all past mistresses of the short story form, and their subject matter ranges from finding one's inner fox to a failed suicide attempt to a grandmother and grandson battling the wind on a beach. Stories and styles are all very different, but what the writers have in common is their ability to take everyday life and look at it afresh, so that even a trip on a ferry or an encounter with a stranger or a child's attempt to please her father become imbued with mystery and humour and sometimes tragedy. Relatively few women writers are translated into English, and this anthology is an attempt to rectify that imbalance and to introduce readers to some truly captivating tales from Portugal.

Teolinda Gers o ha studiato nelle Universit di Coimbra, Tubinga e Berlino, lettrice di Portoghese presso l'Universit Tecnica di Berlino e professoressa cattedratica di Letteratura Tedesca e di Letteratura Comparata alla Universidade Nova di Lisbona. Ha vissuto in Germania, Brasile e in Mozambico ed stata scrittrice residente a Berkeley, Universit della California. Autrice di 17 libri di narrativa, tradotta in 20 paesi. stata insignita dei pi importanti premi letterari portoghesi, tra i quali per due volte il Premio di Narrativa del Pen Clube, il Grande Premio per il Romanzo e la Novella della APE (Associazione Portoghese Scrittori), il Grande Premio del Racconto Camilo Castelo Branco, il Premio Verg lio Ferreira, il Premio Fernando Namora per questo libro, e ha fatto parte della short list del Premio Europeo del Romanzo Aristeion. Nel 2018 ha ricevuto l'Albert Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.

A man and a woman meet in Lisbon and fall in love. City of Ulysses is their story, and the city’s love story besides. It is a story that leads readers down multiple paths, through myth and history, reality and fantasy, literature and the visual arts, the past and the present, male and female relations, the crisis of civilisation and the need to reimagine the world.

Teolinda Gersao paints an extraordinarily evocative picture of childhood in Africa and the stark contrast between warm, lush, ebullient Mozambique and the bleak, poor, priggish Portugal of Salazar. 'Salazar's forty-year dictatorship in Portugal and that country's colonial wars in Africa cast their long shadow over Teolinda Gersao's The Word Tree. This is the first of Gersao's novels to be translated into English. As the Mozambican Laureano reflects, ' the men crossing the sea from Lisbon didn't want that absurd war either'. Laureano's wife Amelia had come to the country from Portugal in search of a better life, but mentally never leaves her homeland, whereas her daughter Gita loves the country and grows up to resent the colonial presence. There are lush descriptions of the country, while the racial order is starkly spelt out: Amelia 'clings to the belief that fair-skinned people are the very top of the racial hierarchy, and that dark-skinned Portuguese people are almost at the bottom, just above the Indians and the blacks'. Adrain Tahourdin in The Times Literary Supplement Margaret Jull Costa's translation was awarded The Calouste Gulbenkian Portuguese Translation Prize for 2012.
