Thomas Platter est n dans une famille tr s modeste de montagnards valaisans. D'abord berger, il est ensuite plac chez un cur pour apprendre lire, mais s'enfuit avec son cousin, tudiant vagabond, pour parcourir l'Europe. Apr s avoir quitt ce dernier, il tudie le latin S lestat dans l' cole de Hans Sapidus, puis suit les le ons de Friedrich Myconius Zurich. Tout en travaillant comme cordier, il apprend ensuite le grec et l'h breu, puis s' tablit B le o il devint correcteur d'imprimerie avant d' tre nomm professeur de grec au gymnase en 1541. Cette autobiographie, adress e son fils a n F lix Platter, dont il avait commenc la r daction en 1572, ne fut publi e pour la premi re fois dans son texte original qu'en 1840, d'apr s le manuscrit autographe conserv B le.
