How animal conservation became a defense against cultural erasureChina today positions itself as a model of state-led environmentalism. On the country's arid rangelands, grassland conservation policies have targeted pastoralists and their animals, blamed for causing desertification. State environmentalism—in the form of grazing bans, enclosure, and resettlement—has transformed the lives of many ethnic minority herders in China's western borderlands. However, this book shows how such policies have been contested and negotiated on the ground, in the context of the state's intensifying nation-building project. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Alasha, in the far west of China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Thomas White describes how ethnic Mongols have foregrounded the local breed of Bactrian camel, mobilizing ideas of heritage and resource conservation to defend pastoralism. In exploring how the greening of the Chinese state affects the entangled lives of humans and animals at the margins of the nation-state, this study is both a political biography of the Bactrian camel and an innovative work of political ecology addressing critical questions of rural livelihoods, conservation, and state power.

Can a philosopher defend the rational warrant for belief in Christianity? Is it reasonable to be religious? Is it philosophically responsible to be a Christian who believes in the mystery of the Trinity? Principles of Catholic Theology explores these questions in a systematic way by considering questions of ultimate explanation. Why not hold that modern atheistic naturalism provides the best explanation of reality? Or, if there is a transcendent first principle that explains all of reality, is it impersonal rather than personal? Contrastingly, if monotheism constitutes the best explanation for created being, how can we reasonably believe in any particular revelation concerning God? What are the criteria for rational belief in revelation? Thomas Joseph White, OP, considers these questions by exploring a series of topics: the transcendentals (existence, oneness, truth, goodness, beauty); rational argument for the existence of God; the immateriality and subsistence after death of the personal soul of the human being; the historical and conceptual coherence of Trinitarian doctrine; and the reasonableness of the natural desire to see God. The aim of Principles of Catholic Theology, Book 2 is to place contemporary natural reason in profound dialogue with the Catholic faith and to think about ways that we can consent to the profound mystery of the Holy Trinity that are in robust concord with the knowledge obtained from philosophical, scientific, and historical sources.

Thomas White was a nineteen year old surfer living a sheltered life in Marin County, California. The year is 1966 and the Vietnam War is ramping up. Tom's idyllic existence is shattered when he's drafted into the U. S. Army. Thrust into the heart of an infamous war, he opens his eyes and heart to a foreign land and its people. Tom shares insights about the relationships formed, experiences encountered, and the horror of war during this brief moment in a historic time. In addition to searing memories, Tom returned from Vietnam with a portfolio of candid photographs that bear witness to this life changing experience. His words and pictures illuminate a harrowing tale of war and the transformation of a soldier by chance. In Thomas White's words: I arrived in Vietnam with the 8th Battalion, 4th Artillery, in July of 1967. We left Da Nang and began our journey to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) dividing South and North Vietnam. The Vietnamese on the opposite sides of this political boundary had more in common than those separated by the Mason Dixon Line during our own Civil War. Politics created the DMZ and the ensuing conflict. The Communist policies of the Soviet Union and China influenced North Vietnam, while the United States supported South Vietnam in its efforts to avert a Communist takeover. This created the perfect atmosphere for war. My Army .175mm gun battery spent most of its time close to the DMZ in Marine Fire Bases. The 175 was not in the Marine's arsenal. Our mission was considerably different from the infantry. We did not leave the compounds on patrol or chopper venturing into hostile terri-tory to capture a hill. For us, direct contact with the enemy was infrequent. From our firebases we sent 156-pound projectiles their way. The exhilaration of war that we experienced was in response to our adversaries' primary purpose of hurling their big projectiles back at us. The events that take place on the following pages are fairly accurate, given the passage of time. A few of the names have been changed to protect the guilty, or they have simply been forgotten. This is an account of Charlie Battery's time in Vietnam from July 1967 to September 1968. I have a particular Vietnam story to tell, and I hope this book accomplishes that mission.
