This book fills a gap in the market by taking an introductory look at cartographic representations as multimedia constructs, from theory to critique to neopragmatist perspectives and in practice. It offers an interdisciplinary analysis from the fields of media and communication studies as well as geography and cartography to examine how cartographic representations as constructions of multimedia shape our options for appropriating space and possessing space-generating qualities. Examples from current social discourses such as the COVID-19 pandemic, debates on climate change, and sustainability plus the war in Ukraine show how multimedia cartographic representations are part of the communicative negotiation processes in public media spheres. The book offers insights into the theoretical foundations, historical developments, and practical applications of cartography, with a particular focus on the critical reflection of power structures and interests. It is aimed at students, researchers, and teachers, thereby inviting each to understand maps not only as technical artifacts but also as complex multimedia constructions.

Dieses Buch füllt eine Lücke im Lehrbuchsegment, indem es kartographische Darstellungen als multimediale Konstrukte von Theorie über Kritik bis hin zur neopragmatischen Perspektive einführend beleuchtet. Es bietet eine interdisziplinäre Analyse aus den Bereichen Medienwissenschaft, Kommunikationswissenschaft, Geographie und Kartographie und untersucht, wie kartographische Darstellungen unsere Wahrnehmung von Raum formen und raumgenerierende Qualitäten besitzen. Beispiele aus aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Diskursen wie der COVID-19-Pandemie, Debatten um Klimawandel und Nachhaltigkeit oder der Krieg in der Ukraine zeigen, wie multimediale kartographische Darstellungen Teil der kommunikativen Aushandlungsprozesse in medialen Öffentlichkeiten sind. This book deals with foodscapes, which are still a relatively young field of research in the social sciences and were first addressed in the context of questions of spatial inequality in the mid-1990s. In addition to an introduction to various landscape concepts as well as a brief historical outline on the geographical study of food, the volume focuses on the multidimensionality of foodscapes and illustrates this with two case studies.

Das Buch befasst sich mit Nahrungslandschaften, sogenannten ‚foodscapes‘, die ein noch recht junges Forschungsfeld der Sozialwissenschaften darstellen und im Kontext von Fragen der räumlichen Ungleichheit ab Mitte der 1990er Jahre erstmals thematisiert wurden. Neben einer Einführung in verschiedene Landschaftskonzepte sowie einem kurzen historischen Abriss zur geographischen Auseinandersetzung mit Nahrungsmitteln fokussiert der Band auf die Multidimensionalität der Nahrungslandschaften und verdeutlicht diese an zwei Fallbeispielen.
