Asses, asses, and more asses! This new edition of Plautus' rumbustious comedy provides the complete original Latin text, witty scholarly commentary, and an English translation that both complements and explicates Plautus' original style. John Henderson reveals this play as a key to Roman social relations centered on many kinds of slavery: to sex, money, and family structure; to masculinity and social standing; to senility and partying; and to jokes, lies, and idiocy. The translation remains faithful to Plautus' syllabic style for reading aloud, as well as to his humorous colloquialisms and wordplay, providing readers with a comfortable affinity to Plautus himself. An indispensable teaching and learning tool for the study of ""Roman New Comedy"", this edition includes comprehensive commentary, useful indexes, and a pronunciation guide that will help readers of all levels understand and appreciate Plautus and his era.

Four Roman Comedies

Four Roman Comedies

Titus Maccius Plautus; Terence

Methuen Drama
2003
nidottu
Four essential classic plays with an introduction by the editor The comedies of Plautus and Terence are all that survive to us of a great age of Roman comedy theatre. Collected here are four important plays that offer a unique insight into everyday life in ancient Rome, whilst maintaining a pivotal influence over the theatre of the present day. In The Haunted House the intrigues of a clever slave are played out in a virtuoso comic role; Plautus's Casina is a fast-moving romp through the sexual mores of the Roman upper classes; Terence's more sophisticated The Eunuch, and The Brothers are perhaps closer in sentiment to the attitudes of modern comedy and reflect situations with universal appeal. The volume is edited and introduced by J. Michael Walton, Professor of Drama at the University of Hull.

"Mostellaria" is one of Plautus' most lively plays. Probably based on a Greek original, Philemon's "Ghost", it concerns the scheming slave Tranio's attempts (including the invention of a haunted house) to disguise from his old master the sexual and financial prodigality of the latter's son. The complex plot of deceit and confusion is, in the way of the genre, finally resolved in reconciliation and forgiveness. This edition, first published in 1968, was conceived as a first reader in Roman comedy. Its introduction includes sections on Plautus, on the genre, on the play and its plot, on Plautine language, style and metrics. Annotation and a full vocabulary aid the beginning reader.

'Menaechmi' is a broad farce that makes use of the comic possibilities of mistaken identity. Shakespeare adapted the plot for his 'Comedy of Errors', but his is not the only adaptation made since the Renaissance. Its neat plot and witty, fast-moving dialogue often speak for themselves: Frances Muecke's Companion to E. F. Watling's translation concentrates on the finer points of detail and is particularly useful in its discussion of the dramatic an dliterary characteristics of Plautine comedy.

This anthology includes his best plays and also seeks to give some idea of his range. His forte was farce, and these selections exemplify at least two of his favorite farcical devices: mistaken identity (Amphitryon) and the lecherous old codger (Casina). The Pot of Gold reveals what Plautus could do with the subtler humor to be evoked from character.
