Two chapters about the building of two kingdoms and two thrones - man's and God's. Two chapters about two very similar and vastly different things. The Israelites wanted a king, saying God was not good enough to be their king. Disappointed, God allowed them their king, but God would have to choose him. Enter David, a shepherd and a warrior, a man after God's own heart. Though David was not perfect, and the books of Samuel are not afraid to point that out, David was the best model of godly leadership on this earth-the right man at the right time.1 & 2 Samuel paved the way for the King of Kings, whose lineage would be through David and who would establish His throne forever. Jesus, born nearly one thousand years later, came through the line of David as a humble baby born in a manger, born in the same town of Bethlehem. This volume of PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES uses scripture reading, prayer, meditation and journaling to ensure that God will communicate to you during your time with Him as you pray through the Bible. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIESWhat is God's word? Simply put, it is the word of God spoken to people long ago who transcribed that information into writing. That writing was meticulously passed down for thousands of years to speak to us today. How did God speak to people in Bible times? -Audibly - God spoke directly to people who heard him with their ears or in their heart.-Through situations - God spoke through the actions and events of this world.-Through people - God spoke through leaders, kings and prophets who proclaimed God's purpose.-Through prophecy - God spoke about future events, then those events happened.-Scripture - God spoke through his written word when people read those words later.-Prayer - God spoke through the prayers of people. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES recognizes the power of God speaking to mankind through His Scriptures. God's word was not only meant to be read, but applied. We must apply ourselves to these passages and adjust our lives to God's will. Today, God uses many ways to speak to us. This book incorporates those avenues of communication to ensure that God will speak to you during your quiet time with Him. Each section asks the reader to do six things.1. Read the passage. Open up the Bible and read His Word.2. Memorize the passage. A certain verse is given special focus. Commit it to memory. Remember it all day.3. Understand the passage. Background information (Time, Characters, Place, What's Happening) help you to understand the context of the section you are reading.4. Read the prayer. Prayer prompts are there to help you continue praying about other specific areas. Listen to the Holy Spirit and see if there is more you need to pray.6. Journal your thoughts. What's the message from the book of Job? Life is tough and then you die? Sort of, but it's more complicated than that. Job's message is this - people suffer on this earth and God allows it. That's a tough pill to swallow. So why would God allow us to suffer? Are we pawns in some supernatural chess game between God and His ultimate adversary? No. He loves us and wants the best for us...and sometimes suffering is best for us. Job reminds us that no one is immune from suffering since even a righteous man like Job had his life turned upside down. Suffering creates opportunities to reveal God's goodness and His blessing. Job shows us that when we do suffer, we must not curse God, but accept His will so others can tell our stories like Job's story is told over and over again. If you could talk to Job right now, he would probably say his suffering was worth it because so many people for centuries have looked to the book of Job and found comfort during their struggles. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES recognizes the power of God speaking to mankind through His Scriptures. God's word was not only meant to be read, but applied. There are times when you're reading through Isaiah that you think you are reading through the New Testament. After Psalms, Isaiah is the second most quoted book in the New Testament. Why? It speaks of child to be born who will be more than a king. It prophesizes of a servant who will die a brutal death and take on the sins of the people. Isaiah also paints a picture of a new heaven and new earth in the future. While Isaiah's job was to give comfort to the Jews who were facing exile in Babylon, wondering if they would ever see Jerusalem and the glory of Israel again, he manages to also prepare his people's hearts for something even greater - the arrival of Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, on this earth 700 years later. If you are an enemy of God, Isaiah will scare you. God does not take lightly any attacks on His people. If you are a follower of God, Isaiah will comfort you. He knows Your struggles and He has a plan to take away your sins and give you a home for eternity. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIESWhat is God's word? Paul was a persecutor of Christians. He was a Pharisee, tasked with arresting, stoning and threatening those following this newfound religion that claimed a dead man came to life to prove he was God. Then one day, on a road to Damascus to break up more churches, Paul met this Jesus and his life changed. Now Paul became the world's greatest evangelist, church planter and spokesman for Jesus Christ. His letters to churches and individuals were meant to instruct, guide and rebuke people in this newfound faith. They did that then and they do so now. He wrote more books of the Bible than any other author. Thirteen total. By praying through Paul's letters, you'll have a deeper understanding of God's grace and Jesus' sacrifice for you. Paul wants you to know that if Jesus died for a sinner like him, then God would certainly die for someone like you. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES recognizes the power of God speaking to mankind through His Scriptures. God's word was not only meant to be read, but applied. The Apostle Paul wrote more books of the Bible than any other person (thirteen). His writings, starting with Romans, have given insight into a person's faith in Christ unparalleled by any other author. And all this coming from the man who persecuted the church. These six books of the Bible cover a wide range of topics from church roles to church discipline, the character of Christians to the rebels trying to disrupt the church, from modern times to end times. Paul wrote two of these books to a church in Thessalonica in Greece. He then wrote two more to Timothy, a pastor in Ephesus found today in Turkey and a letter to Titus, a pastor on the remote island of Crete. Finally, a personal letter appears in the often-forgotten (but wonderfully metaphorical) letter to Philemon. These six books of Bible cover the strengths and weaknesses of many different churches in many different areas. They address the problems and the successes as these new churches struggled to overcome the worldly influence of ungodly regions of the earth. Sound familiar? 1 Thessalonians to Philemon are as much applicable today as they were nearly 2,000 years ago. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES recognizes the power of God speaking to mankind through His Scriptures. God's word was not only meant to be read, but applied. Paul visited the city of Corinth in Greece two times (Acts 18) and established a church there. It was no easy process. Corinth was inundated with Greek thought and worldly practices. The worship of gods and sensuality permeated every aspect of society. And here, nestled in the middle of all this was the church in Corinth. Paul had a difficult time keeping the world out of the church so his letters hammered home the truth, outlining how a Christian must live and what a church must do.1 & 2 Corinthians are still handbooks for the church today, struggling against worldly influence. Contained in these books are some of the most quoted and examined passages in Christianity. Topics such as marriage (1 Cor.7), communion (1 Cor.11), spiritual gifts (1 Cor.12), love (1 Cor.13), the resurrection (1 Cor.15), the new body (2 Cor.5), giving (2 Cor.9) and Paul's thorn in the flesh (2 Cor.12). Paul's teachings have created a foundation of belief that has withstood nearly 2,000 years. The books of Corinthians focus on your relationship with God and your relationship with other believers in the church. Praying through them and knowing these books are crucial to help you live victoriously in an ungodly world. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES recognizes the power of God speaking to mankind through His Scriptures. God's word was not only meant to be read, but applied. Twelve books nestled into the back of the Old Testament. Seldom read. Ignored mostly, except for the story about Jonah and the occasional prophecy for Christ. But Hosea through Malachi have an important reoccurring theme that we need to remember today: God does not overlook sin and one day He will judge the world for its behavior. If He didn't let His people off the hook then for their obsession with idols and love for the world, God won't be kind now when He judges the entire world in the future. God is also about restoration and bringing His people home. During the time of the minor prophets, that home was Jerusalem. For us, that home will be heaven and the eternal kingdom of God. Horrors and hope. That's what the minor prophets were about then and what their message says to us now. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIESWhat is God's word? There's no book in the Bible quite like Revelation. There's no book more controversial like Revelation. We treat Revelation like a puzzle that needs to be figured out so we can figure out when Jesus is going to return. But what if we did know? What if the numbers and signs added up and it all pointed to tomorrow Would we be ready? Would our friends and family? Revelation is not a puzzle. It's a revelation. So what does Revelation really reveal? Revelation reveals God's power and authority over time. Revelation reveals God's judgment on thousands of years of sin. When you pray through Revelation using this prayer guide, don't worry about the puzzle. Be inspired by the power of Revelation. Be introspective too, examining your own life and making sure you're on God's side and ready for the day of His return. This volume of PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES uses scripture reading, prayer, meditation and journaling to ensure that God will communicate to you during your time with Him as you walk through Revelation. The book of Joshua rides an incredible high of victories for the Israelites who took over the Promised Land and showed the enemies that God was the Boss. Then, something happened. Joshua died and new leadership never really stepped up. The people settled into their homes, started families, grew crops and forgot about God. The Book of Judges is about the failure of the people who did whatever they wanted to do, then suffered the consequences by allowing their enemies to slowly take over. Despite being shunned, God stepped in and helped the people in ways they could never imagine. Enter Ruth, a Moabite, one of the enemies, who faithfully followed her mother-in-law to Bethlehem to give birth to David's grandfather. One day a king would be born who would give birth to the King of Kings. This was the ultimate solution to the problem of sin. These three books walk us through a times of great victory and great defeat. Kind of like our lives at times. However, we see through these books that God never gives up on His people and He always has a plan. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES What is God's word? The word "Acts" is found in the word "actions." In Acts, Jesus left the apostles to do the work of spreading the Gospel all throughout the known world. By chapter 28, they've made a pretty significant dent - from Africa (Ethiopia), to Asia (Turkey), to Europe (Rome and possibly Spain). As you read, pray and meditate through Acts, get ready to hear that voice...the voice that turned Paul's life around...the voice that sent Philip into the desert to find a man reading Isaiah...the voice that comforted the apostles in jail for witnessing...the voice that told Paul to get arrested and face Caesar in Rome. That voice of the Holy Spirit always tells Christ followers to go, do and say-not sit, soak and relax. This is a dangerous book because it calls Christians to action. Many list Romans as their favorite book of the Bible, even ranking higher than the Gospels. Why? Romans is deep, theological and yet plain and direct. Romans clearly explains the Gospels, incorporating Old Testament into New Testament thought into one book. Paul, the writer, was bred to write Romans. The educated Pharisee met Jesus Christ, colliding the law with grace. Romans rolls out those two concepts seamlessly. In fact, the idea of the "Roman Road" has become a tool of evangelism because Romans does an excellent job of walking a person from sinner to saint. PRAYING THROUGH ROMANS feels like praying through the Bible since it brings Old and New together into one beautiful book. I hope after your time praying through Romans it becomes your favorite book too. This volume of PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIES uses the Bible, prayer, meditation and journaling to ensure that God will communicate to you during your time with Him as you walk through Romans. The words of scripture are paraphrased into a personal prayer so you can actually be praying what the words say. Read the written prayer as if it is from your heart. Don't recite them as words from a page, but a plea from your soul.5. Keep praying. Prayer prompts are there to help you continue praying about other specific areas. Listen to the Holy Spirit and see if there is more you need to pray.6. Journal your thoughts. In the space provided, write down some thoughts that you feel God said to your during this time. Every five sections I've included a "Prayer Thoughts" page to give you more room to journal your thoughts and write down prayer requests as you go through the Bible. Get ready to spend some quality time with God. Get ready for God to speak to you through His Word.

John is unlike any other Gospel. He has a clear objective in this fourth book of the New Testament - to show that Jesus is God and he does it by highlighting seven miracles to show that Jesus has power over material objects, earthly events and life or death. John also includes seven "I am" statements, describing Jesus as bread, a shepherd, a gate and the way to an eternal relationship with His Father. Clearly Jesus knew who He was and He wants us to know it too. John didn't need the other Gospels to help Him document His time with Jesus. Those three years clearly impacted this former fisherman's worldview. He wanted to write a Gospel that would draw people to Jesus and capture them with the truth. Because John is unique, your prayer time through John will be too, as you draw closer to the way, the truth and life. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIESWhat is God's word? Using his schooling and research abilities, Dr. Luke set out to give an "orderly account" based on his careful "investigation" of the life of Christ. Who did he interview? Apparently Mary since he included facts about the birth of Jesus nobody else mentioned. Apparently the apostles since he's included a wide range of information and new stuff nobody else talked about. Luke may never have met Christ in the flesh, but his account revealed a close connection to Him based on the stories he heard. It's all he needed to start a relationship with Christ. As you pray through Luke, investigate your own relationship with Christ and grow closer to Him through these amazing stories. PRAYING THROUGH THE BIBLE SERIESWhat is God's word?
