One of the many important steps in scheduling a U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Aids to Navigation and/or Chart Updating (ATON/CU) Program patrol or mission is PREPARATION. Several adverse conditions/occurrences could affect the successful performance of an ATON/CU patrol or mission, i. e., crew proficiency (state of crew training and qualification), insufficient or improper equipment, weather conditions, etc. Participating Auxiliary members must be properly trained and equipped to conduct successful ATON/CU patrols and missions. OBJECTIVE: 1. To acquire a general knowledge of the responsibilities of the Auxiliary in the conduct of ATON/CU PATROLS and MISSIONS. 2. To become familiar with the preparation for an ATON/CU PATROL or MISSION. 3. To become familiar with the use of the tools and equipment required to support ATON/CU operations.

CHANGES. This Manual has been promulgated to reflect changes in Boat Force missions, processes, and responsibilities. Due to the number of changes, modifications, additions, etc. to this revision, personnel engaged in the management of Coast Guard boats must review and understand the contents in this revision. This Instruction has been thoroughly reviewed during the directives clearance process, and it has been determined there are records scheduling requirements, in accordance with Federal Records Act, 44 U. S. C. 3101 et seq., NARA requirements and Information and Life Cycle Management Manual, COMDTINST M5212.12 (series).

Since its original printing in 2002, Pub 1 has served as the Coast Guard's capstone doctrinal publication. It defines its principles and culture. It describes its history, missions, purpose, and ethos. It communicates who and what the Coast Guard is and how it accomplishes its missions. This May 2009 update includes data on roles and missions, forces, historic evolution, and values.
