This handbook provides information and procedures to assist personnel assigned as Enlisted Aides. Enlisted Aides (EA) receive extensive training in cooking, baking, bartending, uniform management, entertaining, dining, and living area management. Navy Enlisted Aides provide service for admirals and senior government executives, also run the White House Mess for the President of the United States. They are responsible for assisting the officer in the performance of his military and official responsibilities. Enlisted Aides are a selected group of Culinary Specialists that perform some of the most demanding job assignments. This publication has no associated assignments or test. Culinary Specialists (CS) receive extensive training in cooking, baking, dining and living area management. Navy Culinary Specialists provide food service for admirals and senior government executives and run the White House Mess for the President of the United States. They are responsible for all aspects of the dining (mess decks) and living areas, Culinary Specialists work in the 'heart of the ship, ' and are vital in maintaining high crew morale on the ship and every shore base

If you are new to the Legalman (LN) rating, you will soon learn that the scope of the rating is as broad as the Navy's legal system. You will be required to perform many different duties to include matters pertaining to military justice, foreign claims, investigations, administrative discharges, and legal assistance. As you advance in the rating, you will find that your duties and responsibilities will be expanded to include:  Legal research and writing;  Preparing and administering office and claims budgets;  Interviewing clients and witnesses; and  Leading civilians and military personnel to become an office manager.

As public affairs and visual information experts, MCs present the story of America's Navy to audiences in the Navy and to the rest of the world through a variety of mediums. MCs write and produce print and broadcast journalism news and feature stories for military and civilian newspapers, magazines, television and radio broadcast stations. They capture video and still imagery of military operations, exercises and other Navy events. They serve overseas, on ships, and at stateside commands as photographers, videographers, public affairs specialists, newspaper and magazine staff members, and TV and radio station staff and talent. MCs also create graphic designs in support of the public affairs mission, create and manage official websites, and perform high-speed, high-volume graphic reproduction. The Navy Yeoman (YN) is an administrative related field and is normally assigned to an administrative office. In today's Navy, the YN carries out a broad range of duties which include office procedures, typing correspondence such as official letters, instructions, notices, plan of the day, fitness and evaluation forms and forms management programs, mail management, security, legal, awards, and records disposal. YN also must demonstrate a working knowledge of pay and allowances, leave procedures, along with maintaining officer and enlisted service records, officer promotions and enlisted advancements. YN must understand the following programs: the officer distribution control report (ODCR) and enlisted distribution verification report (EDVR), casualty assistance calls officer (CACO), social usage and protocol, travel, navy standard integrated personnel system (NSIPS), and individual personnel tempo (ITEMPO). YN also need to have an understanding of working with flag offices.

Familiarizes the trainee with the various aspects of the Personnel Specialist rating, such as Office Occupations and Managements, Manpower Management, Personnel Casualty Report, Financial Accountability, Navy Cash, Separations, Discharges and Retirements, Tuition Assistance and Enlisted Advancement System, Pay and Personnel Entitlements.

The fuels that the Aviation Boatswain Mate (Fuels) will most commonly work with are motor gasoline (MOGAS) and jet propulsion (JP). Because of the complexity and hazards of handling fuels, all personnel must be fully knowledgeable of their characteristics and operating qualities. We will discuss the properties of gasoline and jet propulsion fuels so that you can understand the need for safety and caution in handling them. We will also discuss quality surveillance and the test equipment used to ensure the delivery of a clean product. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: When you have completed this chapter, you will be able to do the following: 1. Describe the characteristics of the fuels commonly handled by the Aviation Boatswain Mate Fuels. 2. Describe the problems caused by fuel contamination. State the types and limits of fuel contaminants. 3. Describe the specific types of fuel samples taken by the ABF and explain proper sampling procedures.

As a ship's serviceman (SH) you will be involved in the daily operation of the retail and service activities of an afloat or ashore supply department. SHs can be tasked to perform the duties of a laundryman, barber, ship's store operator, holding location custodian, or records keeper. In addition, it is important for you to start early in your career to assume the added responsibilities of being a supervisor of a retail or service activity. The varied supply demands of the operating forces and shore establishments of the Navy require procurement, storage, and a distribution system with a scope unequaled in the commercial world. The term "supply system" is used to describe the integrated activity of the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and the Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) that procures, holds, and issues materials to the operating forces and shore activities.

The primary purpose of the United States Navy's training establishment is to provide operational forces with trained personnel who can maintain a high degree of Fleet readiness. Several offices coordinate with each other to plan for training and to determine the purposes of training within various commands. These offices are: Chief of Naval Operations (CNO); Commander, U. S. Fleet Forces Command (CUSFF); System Commands (SYSCOMS); Navy Enterprises (Type Commander; Marine Corps Combat Development Command (MCCDC); Naval Education and Training Command (NETC); and Commander, Navy Reserve Forces Command (COMNAVRESFOR).

Overview As you advance in your rating, both you and the Navy benefit. This is understandable since you have gained more experience in your rating, have probably attended several Navy schools, and your overall attitude is generally well-oriented to Navy life. You are now better qualified and in a better position to impart your knowledge and experience to the personnel you supervise. Your bearing, actions, and disposition are under scrutiny not only by your seniors, but also by your subordinates. Advancement brings both increased rewards and increased responsibilities. These include higher pay, greater prestige, more interesting and challenging assignments, and the satisfaction of getting ahead in your chosen career. As a new first class or chief petty officer (CPO), these interesting and challenging assignments bring along new leadership responsibilities You have acquired a great amount of valuable knowledge and expertise in your career; now it is your turn to pass this technical know-how on to others.

All individuals have the responsibility to understand and observe safety standards and regulations that are established for the prevention of injury to themselves and other people and damage to property and equipment. As an individual, you have a responsibility to yourself and to your shipmates to do your part in preventing mishaps. As a petty officer or chief petty officer, you have the responsibility of setting a good example; you cannot ignore safety regulations and expect others to follow them. Personnel should always observe the following safety practices: Observe all posted operating instructions and safety precautions. Report any unsafe condition or any equipment or material deficiency you think might be unsafe. Warn others of hazards and the consequences of their failing to observe safety precautions. Wear or use approved protective clothing or protective equipment. Report any injury or evidence of impaired health that occurs during your work or duty to your supervisor.

Space and space operations are not new concepts to the Navy. The U. S. Navy's involvement in space spans four decades. During this time, the U. S. Navy has been a leader in developing national space capabilities, pioneering many of the early programs from launching satellites to placing a man on the moon. This involvement is continuing at an accelerated pace with significant implications for future Naval operations.

The term blueprint reading means interpreting ideas expressed by others on drawings, whether or not the drawings are actually blueprints. Drawing or sketching is the universal language used by engineers, technicians, and skilled craftsmen. Drawings need to convey all the necessary information to the person who will make or assemble the object in the drawing. Blueprints show the construction details of parts, machines, ships, aircraft, buildings, bridges, roads, and so forth.

Chaplains are qualified Religious Ministry Professionals (RMPs) endorsed by a Department of Defense (DoD) listed Religious Organization (RO) and commissioned as naval officers in the Chaplain Corps (CHC). As a condition of appointment, every RMP must be willing to function in the diverse and pluralistic environment of the military, with tolerance for diverse religious traditions and respect for the rights of individuals to determine their own religious convictions. Chaplains must be willing to support the free exercise of religion by all servicemembers, their families, and other authorized persons. Chaplains are trained and expected to cooperate with other chaplains and RMPs and work within the specialized environment of the military without compromising the tenets of their own religious traditions. Chaplains are non-combatants. Chaplains do not participate in activities that compromise their status as non-combatants, violate the tenets of their RO, or undermine confidential communication.
