This handbook is designed primarily for local government and policymakers in their disaster risk reduction and resilience activities. It offers practical guidance-understand and take action on the “Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient,” as set out in the global United Nations campaign ""Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready!"". The handbook is built on the knowledge and expertise of campaign partners, participating cities and local governments. It responds to the call for better access to information, knowledge, capacities and tools to effectively deal with disaster risk and extreme climate events. It provides an overview of key strategies and actions needed to build resilience-disasters, as part of an overall strategy to achieve sustainable development.

The publication reports on a project carried out by ESCAP in partnership with the Asian Institute of Technology on building codes in the Asia-Pacific region. It presents the conclusions of an analysis on current status of integration of environmental sustainability and disaster resilience in building codes. It also summarizes the findings of documenting six good practices of enforcing greener and more resilient buildings. It concludes with recommendations.

Focusing on the Least Developed Countries located in the Asia-Pacific region, this study explores the impact of different approaches available to the LDCs and their partners in improving their developmental prospects through enhanced trade. It presents trade related data of the 14 LDCs and the linkage between trade and economic development. It analyses market access and studies increasing protectionist measures faced by LDCs during the crisis period. It explores reciprocal trade liberalisation policies (bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral) from various perspectives in order to better understand their differences, interaction and impact on LDCs and more developed countries. It also discusses possible options to improve the capacity of LDCs to tap their trade potential and integrate more effectively into the global economy.

The main message of this publication is that exposure and vulnerability continue to be twin challenges for the region. Faced with growing economic losses and increasingly vulnerable populations, and inspired by good practices in reducing social vulnerability, the publication analyzes the drivers of risks and the strategies that are in place to deal with these growing risks.
