Vandana Singh

One of contemporary SF's most original and compelling voices, Vandana Singh is a professor of physics who weaves the ancient wisdom of her native India and the hard truths of quantum science into stories that speak to the complex wonders of today's world. This collection includes both her fiction and her report on the Utopian experiments that are finding new ways to save our unraveling dystopia.

Science fiction happens everywhere This is why it's about time we reloaded the future we've known so far with visions from a much wider selection of voices, languages and backgrounds: it's about time we moved from the old "Sense of Wonder" to the new "Sense of Wander" - a useful concept that will allow us to discover the many hidden gems just waiting to be translated from languages other than English and cultures others than the Western one. This second collection of short stories published on Future Fiction features 15 stories from 13 countries and translations from 5 different languages, including authors such as Vandana Singh, Chen Qiufan, Ian McDonald, K. A. Teryna, Anil Menon, Yudhanjaya Wijeratne, Stamatis Stamatopolous, Seyong Jeong, Martha Riva Palacio Obon, Renan Bernardo, Clifton Gachagua, Santiago Belluco, Hassan Abdulrazzak, and Morgan Swim. The translations are made by Stephanie Polakis (Greek), Alex Shvartsman (Russian), Emily Jin (Chinese), Sophie Bowman (Korean), Will Morningstar (Spanish). This book presents mechanisms and the clinical implications of Piezosurgery in periodontics in day to day practice as shown by research and clinical experience over the decade since the author first developed the technique. There has been many rapid changes in field of dentistry since last two decades. Among surgical techniques piezosurgery using ultrasonic vibration has been introduced with wide range of applications in dentistry. Ultrasonic vibrations have been used to cut tissue for two decades. However, it is only in the last five - six years that experimental applications have been used routinely for standard clinical applications in many different fields of surgery. This revolutionary technique was invented by Professor Thomas Vercellotti in 1988 to overcome the limits of traditional instrumentation in oral bone surgery by modifying and improving conventional ultrasound technology. The Piezosurgery device consists of a novel piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer powered by an ultrasonic generator capable of driving a range of resonant cutting inserts. This innovative device is designed and commercialised by Mectron Medical Technology to overcome limits of traditional instruments and to reach increasingly higher levels of precision, safety and rapidity in recovery after bone surgery.

Philip K. Dick Award finalist Praise for Vandana Singh: “A most promising and original young writer.”—Ursula K. Le Guin “Lovely! What a pleasure this book is . . . full of warmth, compassion, affection, high comedy and low.”—Molly Gloss, author of The Hearts of Horses “Vandana Singh’s radiant protagonist is a planet unto herself.”—Village Voice “Sweeping starscapes and daring cosmology that make Singh a worthy heir to Cordwainer Smith and Arthur C. Clarke.”—Chris Moriarty, Fantasy & Science Fiction “I’m looking forward to the collection . . . everything I’ve read has impressed me—the past and future visions in ‘Delhi’, the intensity of ‘Thirst’, the feeling of escape at the end of ‘The Tetrahedron’…” —Niall Harrison, Vector (British Science Fiction Association) “…the first writer of Indian origin to make a serious mark in the SF world … she writes with such a beguiling touch of the strange.” —Nilanjana Roy, Business Standard In her first North American collection, Vandana Singh’s deep humanism interplays with her scientific background in stories that explore and celebrate this world and others and characters who are trying to make sense of the people they meet, what they see, and the challenges they face. An eleventh century poet wakes to find he is as an artificially intelligent companion on a starship. A woman of no account has the ability to look into the past. In "Requiem," a major new novella, a woman goes to Alaska to try and make sense of her aunt’s disappearance. Singh's stories have been performed on BBC radio, been finalists for the British SF Association award, selected for the Tiptree award honor list, and oft reprinted in Best of the Year anthologies. Her dives deep into the vast strangeness of the universe without and within and with her unblinking clear vision she explores the ways we move through space and time: together, yet always apart.

Vandana Singh's first book, Younguncle Comes to Town, was an instant classic of children's literature. Now, in this highly anticipated follow-up, Younguncle finds himself on an adventure in the mountains of India. In Younguncle in the Himalayas, our protagonist arrives with his family at the gloomy, mysterious Hotel Pine-Away and soon discovers that their mountain holiday is going to be anything but peaceful. As Younguncle chats with monkeys and debates the true nature of reality with an offbeat sect of the Quantum Banana spiritualists, the fate of the picturesque little valley hangs in the balance. Who is the strange Rat-girl who charms rodents out of the hotel? Can the children and their eccentric uncle thwart the schemes of the dangerous city-slicker Pradeep Daalmakhini? Can Younguncle help Daalmakhini's intended bride escape a fate worse than death? Has our favorite adventurer finally met his match?

Kitsune. Werewolves. Crane wives. Selkies. Every culture has stories of such strange creatures — animals turning into humans, humans shapeshifting into animals. Sometimes seductive, sometimes bloodthirsty, but always unpredictable like nature itself, these beings are manifestations of our secret hearts, our desire to belong to both worlds: one tame and civilized, the other unfettered and full of wild impulse. Here are stories that will make you wish you could howl at the moon until your heart bursts with longing or feel yourself shedding your human body as easily as a snake sheds its skin. Beware the night...it might not kill you, but it will certainly steal you away!
