Jane Jacobs blev känd över världen för sin bok The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Genom boken och sin aktivism på gatunivå i 1960-talets New York blev hon en centralfigur inom stadsplaneringsfrågor och hennes insatser har efter genombrottet ständigt tolkats och debatterats. Den tidiga berömmelsen verkar emellertid ha överskuggat hennes författarskap trots att det sträcker sig fram till 2004. Jacobs breddade sitt tänkande till att omfatta samhällsbyggandet i dess vidaste mening från ekonomi och ekologi till politik och samhällsfilosofi. This open access book paves the way for transformative strategies that increase the role of railway stations and other related transit environments in contributing to the global goals for sustainable development (the UN’s sustainability goals in Agenda 2030). Drawing on insights from a Swedish case, this book adopts a systems thinking approach to investigate how environments impact transit safety and provide strategies to address the diverse safety needs of users. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, including field inspections, analysis of official data, questionnaire surveys, and interviews. These data sources are analysed using statistical techniques, GIS mapping, and regression modelling. Building on these findings, the book also critically examines how future railway station designs are currently being planned to enhance accessibility and safety. This book answers the following questions: Why are certain station environments perceived as more unsafe than others, even though fewer crimes are committed there? Why do different groups of travelers differ about victimization and safety? From a governance perspective, what would make these places safer? What are the patterns of victimization of vulnerable groups, such as women and individuals with disabilities? The findings have international resonance as this book demonstrates the connection between safety and sustainability, offering useful insights and recommendations for researchers, practitioners and policymakers committed to shaping safer, more inclusive transit environments.

I de flesta städer - från minsta småstad i Sverige till megastäder som New York - finns miljöer där brott begås i större utsträckning än i andra. För att kunna förstå brottslighetens natur och agera både brottspreventivt och trygghetsskapande är det viktigt att veta varför brottslighet sker oproportionerligt mycket just i dessa miljöer. Den här boken handlar om vilka stadsmiljöer som koncentrerar brott och presenterar möjliga förklaringar till varför det är så. Här diskuteras också vad det är som får människor att uppleva dessa miljöer som otrygga. Boken ger exempel på systematiska metoder som används för att kunna identifiera platser med hög brottskoncentration samt diskuterar möjliga relevanta situationsbaserade åtgärder för brottsförebyggande arbete i en svensk kontext. Criminology has until recently neglected the nature and levels of crime outside the urban realm. This is not a surprise as crime tends to concentrate in urban areas and the police directs resources where the problems are. Yet, there are many reasons why scholars, decision-makers and society as a whole should care about crime and safety in rural areas. This book highlights 20 reasons why crime and safety in rural areas is a topic of relevance. We attempt to untangle currently simplistic views of the rural by discussing a number of facets of the countryside as both safe and criminogenic, and more importantly, a hybrid place worth to be examined in its own right. We adopt the notion of a rural-urban continuum that captures the nuances of places of varied nature, spanning from remote and desolate spaces to accessible and connected environments of the urban fringe. Areas on the rural-urban continuum may be in constant transformation given local and global influences, which imposes challenges for policing and long-term social sustainability. Then, the book critically reviews a rich body of English-language literature in rural criminology that extends over more than four decades—a scholarship that has engaged researchers and practitioners in all continents. The books finishes with a discussion of the emergent research questions of the field, and offers implications for practice and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

A sustainable city enables the fulfillment of the mobility needs of its citizens via accessible, reliable and safe transportation systems. Safety is one of many factors influencing the mobility of individuals in urban environments. Moving Safely: Crime and Perceived Safety in Stockholm’s Subway Stations aims to provide both theoretical and empirical perspectives on safety conditions at subway stations. The book adopts an approach that is place-centered, looking upon those who travel through the system and who may become a victim of crime. Safety at transportation nodes is not a field for one science only; it demands the combination of cross-disciplinary theories (urban criminology, architecture, geography, transportation and urban planning) as well as integrated methods that are capable of dealing with an ever-increasing volume of data. Adopting a whole journey approach to safety, the book offers suggestions on how to plan safety at subway stations with a variety of passengers’ needs. Although these suggestions are not the first ones in the literature, certainly they are new in terms of relying on findings from hypothesis testing and spatial data from a Scandinavian city. Moving Safely is relevant for experts in safety and transportation research, including criminologists, planners, transportation engineers, architects as well as professionals dealing directly with safety interventions.
