This book features four peer-reviewed reviews on the biological control of pests and diseases in horticultural crops. The first chapter provides a detailed overview of the use of biopesticides in horticulture and the key challenges that can arise as a result of their use. The book primarily focusses on the use (and development) of biopesticide approaches which use microbial entomopathogens. The second chapter considers recent advances in the application of bioprotectants for controlling plant diseases and addresses issues with enhancing the field efficacy of bioprotectants on horticultural crops. It also considers the approaches which can be implemented to increase the number of bioprotectants for plant disease control, including extending the spectrum of activity for existing products and finding new substances. The third chapter assesses the efficacy of biological control agents against a range of major grapevine diseases, including downy mildew, powdery mildew, grey mould and ochratoxigenic fungi. The chapter also considers how biocontrol efficacy can be improved through a greater understanding of the interactions between pathogen, plant and environmental conditions. The final chapter reviews the use of biocontrol agents for control of major fruit tree diseases, such as fireblight, postharvest fruit rots, brown rot, European canker and pear brown spot. A case study on the biocontrol strategies available for treating apple scab is also provided.

This collection features four peer-reviewed reviews on major contaminants in agricultural soils. The first chapter discusses emerging technologies for remediating soil polluted with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and their contamination routes. The chapter also addresses techniques for their identification and tracking, persistence and bioaccumulation in the soil and risks to and effects on human health and soil health. The second chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the pathways through which antibiotics reach the soil, the processes that influence their fate within the soil and the techniques and efforts used to predict their behaviour and fate. The chapter also offers insights from specific case studies and discusses future research directions to address environmental challenges. The third chapter addresses the risks associated with using treated wastewater in irrigation systems for crop production, including an elevation in soil water osmotic pressure, the addition of toxic ions and organic contaminants to the soil and the deterioration of the physical and hydraulic properties of soil. The final chapter reviews the impact of heavy metal contamination on soil health, focussing on its effects on soil biogeochemical processes, nutrient cycling and soil functions in crop production, environmental quality and food security. The chapter also discusses common indicators of soil contamination and remediation techniques.

This collection features four peer-reviewed reviews on understanding and managing major diseases affecting sheep. The first chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the main classical and emerging diseases which pose a threat to global sheep production, including diseases of the reproductive, nervous, respiratory and alimentary systems, as well as diseases of the skin and feet. The second chapter reviews the challenge posed by gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections in sheep and discusses the growing problem of anthelmintic resistance to anthelmintic drugs conventionally used for GIN control. The chapter also considers the use of alternative approaches and complementary interventions, such as selective breeding, grazing management and nutritional supplementation. The third chapter addresses key issues in the design and implementation of disease surveillance systems in sheep populations. The chapter also reviews different types of surveillance and flock health objectives, data sources, testing and sampling techniques. The final chapter describes common diseases of sheep and some commonly used vaccines and explains why the identification of immunological correlates underpins vaccine design. A case study on ovine enzootic abortion is used as a model to discuss current barriers to progress and future opportunities for applications of immunology to improve sheep production.
