The dominant culture of industrial civilisation is highly materialistic, holding up Western-style, consumer lifestyles as the path to happiness and fulfilment. But consumer lifestyles are failing to satisfy the human craving for meaning, and they are degrading our planet in ways that are grossly unsustainable and unjust. We desperately need to explore or rediscover less materialistic, 'simpler' ways of living.'Simple living' refers to ways of life based on notions such as frugality, sufficiency, moderation, and mindfulness. This anthology brings together twenty-six short essays discussing the most significant individuals, cultures, and movements that have embraced simple living throughout history. What did Buddha and Jesus think about simple living? What contribution did the ancient Greeks and Romans make? How do the Amish and the Quakers live? And why did Henry Thoreau leave his hometown to live in the woods? Readers will also gain insight into the lives and philosophies of people like Mahatma Gandhi and William Morris, and learn about contemporary eco-social movements, such as those based on permaculture, intentional communities, degrowth, and voluntary simplicity. This deep but engaging book examines these great moments in the story of simple living, and many more, but it looks backwards in order to shed light on the present and future. Read it and be inspired.'This engaging book raises one of the key questions of our times, presenting a rich tapestry of perspectives on what it means to live simply.' - ROB HOPKINS, The Transition Handbook'Simple Living in History challenges the mentality of waste and extravagance that defines modern industrial lifestyles, reminding us that the answers we need have been here all along, waiting for us to notice them.' - JOHN MICHAEL GREER, The Wealth of Nature and Green Wizardry'This book highlights the continuous cultural lineage that underpins current activism for an ecologically viable and spiritually nourishing life now and in the future. For permaculture practitioners and activists focused on building ecologically smart, localised economies, this book highlights how rethinking our attitudes and behaviour toward consumption can be a fruitful pathway to social and ecological harmony.' - DAVID HOLMGREN, Permaculture: Principles and Pathways beyond Sustainability

The first two volumes of Moonlit Tales of the Macabre dealt with human behavior when thrown in strange circumstances or when in contact with odd objects and creatures, as well as with questions of life, death, and everything that lies between. This new installment is dedicated to strange places - mansions, castles, cellars, and towers. You never know what might be hiding within the walls of a perfectly ordinary mental institution, or what you might find if you venture out to investigate a strange light in the window of an old fortress. Enter with care, as we present Moonlit Tales of the Macabre - Volume Three.

What is the Salmagundi? It's 20 tales of desperation and decadence told through the eyes of characters on the edge. The stories careen between right and wrong as they navigate through love and death and everything in between. It's where tales of murder, hookers, bar fights and Holly Go Lightly wannabes keep pace with stories about familial loss, suicide, coming of age and the after effects of war (a zombie war, but a war none the less). Invoking Barthelme, Thompson and Carver, the writing is experimental and unflinching with a surreal sense of humor. The Salmagundi is playful and disturbing, diverse and entertaining - it's perfect for reading on the beach or while waiting to get your mom out of jail

New Plains Review is published semiannually in the spring and fall by the University of Central Oklahoma and is staffed by faculty and students. We are committed to publishing high quality poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction by established and emerging writers. As passionate editors and students of New Plains Review, The University of Central Oklahoma's literary journal, we have chosen the following written and visual work for their enticing originality, creativity, and urgency to be in print. We desire to engage our readers with thought-provoking emotion and discussion, while remaining true to the author's voice and intent, and to gather in unison a moving, memorable literary journal. This Fall, we have included a wide variety of material in our Poetry, Fiction, and Nonfiction sections. Inadvertently, we found ourselves being drawn to works that portray the darker side of the human mind and life. This may be evident considering our opening quote from Poe. While discussing these issues, we were convinced our readers would also be enraptured in the intensity of our writers' words. Our chosen authors and poets have written on diverse subjects such as suicide, depression, marriage, family dilemmas, death, society's obsession with beauty, murder and crime, imagination, and guilt. For our Special Section, Dr. Timothy Petete's students have submitted a variety of artistic representations discussing society's stereotypes, stereotypes in mental illnesses, feminism, and other imperative social issues. This issue's Visual Art section contains a wide variety of high contrast artwork and photography, portraits, and concept artwork. We have chosen to feature the talented Brian Forrest on our 1920s themed cover and divider artwork. On behalf of New Plains Review, we are pleased to present to you our Fall 2013 issue.
