ENGLISH DESCRIPTION A Room of One's Own is an essay written by Virginia Woolf. It was published in 1929 and is based on two lectures given by the author in 1928 at two colleges for women at Cambridge. In this famous essay, Woolf addressed the status of women, and women artists in particular. In this essay, the author also asserts that a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write. According to Woolf, women's creativity has been curtailed due to centuries of prejudice and financial and educational disadvantages. To emphasize her view, she offers the example of an imaginary gifted but uneducated sister of William Shakespeare, who, discouraged from all eventually kills herself. This imaginary woman never writes a word and dies by her own hand, her genius unexpressed. If only she had found the means to create, argues Woolf, she would have reached the same heights as her immortal sibling. Woolf celebrates the work of women who have overcome that tradition and become writers, including Jane Austen, George Eliot, and the Bront sisters, Anne, Charlotte, and Emily. In the final section Woolf suggests that great minds are neutral and argues that intellectual freedom requires financial freedom.

The author penned the article in 1923 and first presented it to the Heretics in 1924. The essay is an argumentative piece that tries to go beyond Arnold Bennett's thesis that characters are what novels are all about, and his too-simple explanation for why young writers haven't been able to make their characters seem real. Woolf picks 1910 as the year when things start to change in the way people treat each other. Why does this matter to her? Understanding the concept of a "real" character requires a comprehensive understanding of British society as a whole. This way, she uses Mrs. Brown to show how people really are. Her research shows how bad writers from the past were, especially those from the Edwardian and Georgian eras, and she concludes that they also failed to make characters that would last. History appears to favor Virginia Woolf in this case: while everyone is familiar with Mrs. Dalloway, neither the Edwardians nor the Georgians have left behind a single character. Instead, what readers remember are the actual settings they made with old tools. This version of the essay uses section headings and bold fonts to enhance the flow of ideas. Apart from that, we present the essay in its original form.
Woolf began work on The Voyage Out by 1910 (perhaps as early as 1907) and had finished an early draft by 1912. The novel had a long and difficult gestation; it was not published until 1915, as it was written during a period in which Woolf was psychologically vulnerable. She suffered from periods of depression and, at one point, attempted suicide. 2] The resultant work contained the seeds of all that would blossom in her later work: the innovative narrative style, and the focus on feminine consciousness, sexuality, and death.

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. ‘Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind…’ Based on a lecture given at Cambridge and first published in 1929, ‘A Room of One’s Own’ interweaves Woolf’s personal experience as a female writer with themes ranging from Austen and Brontë to Shakespeare’s gifted (and imaginary) sister. ‘Three Guineas’, Woolf’s most impassioned polemic, came almost a decade later and broke new ground by challenging the very notions of war and masculinity. This volume combines two inspirational, witty and urbane essays from one of literature’s pre-eminent voices; collectively they constitute a brilliant and lucid attack on sexual inequality.
