Rembrandt was revered as a genius during his lifetime and has fascinated generations of artists and connoisseurs ever since. Rembrandt's trademark – rough, impasto brushwork, his unique lighting and sensitivity – pointed the way forward, not only for portraiture. This edition presents the grand master of the Golden Age of Dutch painting.

Eräs 1600-luvun alankomaalaisen taiteen suurista arvoituksista on nimikirjaimilla I. S. maalauksia signeeranneen taiteilijan identiteetti. One of the great mysteries of 17th century Dutch art is the identity of the artist known as Master I. S. While limited in number, the paintings of this enigmatic artist hold a prominent place in major art collections around the world. Counted among the artists of the School of Rembrandt, Master I. S. is best known for studies of elderly people and scholars in their studios. The painter's known oeuvre is closely associated with Leiden artists such as Rembrandt, Jan Lievens and Gerrit Dou but also suggests links with Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The exhibition and research project Master I. S. - Enigmatic Contemporary of Rembrandt is a collaboration between Serlachius Museums in Mänttä, Finland and Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, the Netherlands. This book is the first comprehensive study of the artist's career ever to be published. It is edited by the curators of the exhibition, Tomi Moisio and Janneke van Asperen. In addition to contributions by the curators, it contains an elucidatory essay by renowned experts of Dutch art, professors Volker Manuth and Marieke de Winkel, who have been studying the oeuvre of this mysterious artist for many years.

The Dutch Golden Age of painting spawned some of history’s greatest artists and artisans, but few can boast the genius and legacy of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–1669). Despite never leaving his native Netherlands, Rembrandt projected his oeuvre past the boundaries of his own experience, producing some of art’s most diverse and impactful works across portraiture, biblical, allegorical, landscape, and genre scenes. In all their forms, Rembrandt’s paintings are built of intricacies—the totality of each subtle facial wrinkle, gaze, or figure amounting to an emotional force that stands unmatched among his contemporaries and artistic progeny alike. Each work is imbued with feeling. Biblical scenes, like Bathsheba at her Bath, become vehicles for meditations on human longing, probing depths beyond that which is canonized in scripture or depicted in other representations. His portraits, be them of wealthy patrons or tradesmen, communicate the essence of an individual through fine demarcations, their faces bathed in an ethereal light against darkened earthtones. Perhaps most striking, his series of self-portraits is a triumph of the medium; beginning in his youth and spanning until a year prior to his death, Rembrandt’s self portraiture is an intimate glimpse into his lifelong process of self-reflection. This XL monograph compiles all 330 of Rembrandt’s paintings in stunning reproductions. From Belshazzar’s Feast to The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, we discover Rembrandt’s painted oeuvre like never before.

Few devotees of the form can approach Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn's radical contributions to self-portraiture. Challenging the conventions enshrined by his predecessors, Rembrandt transformed the art into a fully realized medium capable of communicating emotional depth rather than favorably immortalizing one's likeness in the finest trappings of luxury. With more than 80 works spanning paintings, etchings, and drawings, the Dutchman's lifelong practice of self-portraiture functions as a means of concretizing that which is fleeting. Across four decades, one constant is particularly striking across media and styles--Rembrandt's dedication to presenting himself from multiple perspectives, celebrating the multiplicity of the individual and championing the unfiltered portrayal of emotional expression. Apart from the thematic concerns present within Rembrandt's suite of self-portraits, the works themselves are rich with technical innovation and experimentation. There is an unmistakable humanity present across the entirety of this oeuvre, each expressive brushstroke and obfuscated feature amounting to an unflinchingly honest characterization of himself, in all his foibles, contrasting states of feeling, and stages of life. This monograph renders all of Rembrandt's self-portraits - from his first experimentations at age twenty-two to his final self-portrait painted a year before his death - and stands testament to a life committed to revolutionizing painterly practice both in content and form.
