In applying psychology to the field of politics, the eminent British anthropologist and psychologist W. H. R. Rivers deals with social or collective psychology rather than with the psychology of the individual. This choice presents a number of problems. These include the relation between individual and collective psychology, the concept of a collective or group mind, and the question of how far society can be regarded as an organism. The choice also presents the need to explain the fact that when a number of individuals act together, the product of their combined activity is not the same as what might have emerged from the separate activity of individuals. Rivers' belief in the political process prompted him to deliver the lectures on psychological theory that are printed in this volume. Three other addresses are also included in this volume, one on socialism and human nature, another on education and mental hygiene, and a lecture on the aims of ethnography. Rivers considered the relation between psychology and sociology, putting forward the position that the formulation of an adequate science of social psychology lies in the observation of social conduct, including not merely the social conduct of everyday life, but still those forms of it which are subsumed under the headings of religion, economics, and politics, as well as the social institution of language. The social behavior of mankind is capable of being studied as a methodological principle, independently of the psychological basis of behavior.

One of the most fascinating men of his generation, W. H. R. Rivers was a British doctor and psychiatrist as well as a leading ethnologist. Immortalized as the hero of Pat Barker's award-winning Regeneration trilogy, Rivers was the clinician who, in the First World War, cared for the poet Siegfried Sassoon and other infantry officers injured on the western front. His researches into the borders of psychiatry, medicine and religion made him a prominent member of the British intelligentsia of the time, a friend of H. G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw and Bertrand Russell. Part of his appeal lay in an extraordinary intellect, mixed with a very real interest in his fellow man. Medicine, Magic and Religion is a prime example of this. A social institution, it is one of Rivers' finest works. In it, Rivers introduced the then revolutionary idea that indigenous practices are indeed rational, when viewed in terms of religious beliefs.

This is Volume IV of six in a series in the International Library of Psychology on Anthropology and Psychology. This is Volume XXV of twenty-eight in a collection on Psychoanalysis. Originally published in 1932, the aim of this book is to give a sane interpretation of the significance of dreams based upon a thorough investigation of the incidents of each dream recorded and of the circumstances under which it occurred. Dr Rivers especially calls attention (a) to the inadequacy of Freud's theory of wish-fulfilment as an explanation of dreams; (b) to the exaggerated importance assigned by the psycho-analytic school to incidents in the dreamer's early life to the neglect of recent conflicts, which he regards as more important as causal agents; and (c) especially to the fallacies of Freudian interpretations of symbolism, and particularly of sexual motives and symbols, which have been responsible for most of the opposition to Freud's teaching.

First published in 1922 as the second edition of a 1920 original, and formed from lectures delivered in the Psychological Laboratory at the University of Cambridge in 1919, this book attempts 'to put into a biological setting the system of psycho-therapy which came to be generally adopted in Great Britain in the treatment of the psycho-neuroses of war' in the wake of WWI. Rivers suggests a variety of treatments for war-related psychological disorders, including hypnotism, and the possible link between of military duties and 'the neuroses of warfare'.
