The Tapestried Chamber; Or, the Lady in the Sacque (Dodo Press) Paperback - February 22, 2008 by Walter Scott Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (1771-1832) was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time. In some ways Scott was the first author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers all over Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and specifically Scottish literature. Famous titles include: Ivanhoe, The Lady of the Lake and Waverley. At the age of 25 he began dabbling in writing, translating works from German, his first publication being rhymed versions of ballads by B rger in 1796. He then published a three-volume set of collected Scottish ballads, The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. This was the first sign of his interest in Scottish history from a literary standpoint. Amongst his other works are Marmion (1808), The Heart of Mid-Lothian (1818), Rob Roy (1818), The Bride of Lammermoor (1819), The Fortunes of Nigel (1822), St. Ronan's Well (1823), The Betrothed (1825), Kenilworth (1821), The Mirror and Quentin Durward. Quentin Durward (Medieval Classics of Fiction)
Quentin Durward is Sir Walter Scott's historical novel depicting the fierce rivalries among monarchs in the late Middle Ages. Our protagonist amid the power plays is the titular Quentin Durward. Falling into the service of Louis XI as a Garde cossaise (Scottish Guard) owing to his excellent archery skills, the young Scot bears witness to and is involved with the internecine intrigues and plotting ensuing between the King of France and the various nobles he views as mistrustful. A staunch royalist with loyalty for his benefactor, Quentin must heroically defend the monarch against would-be challengers to the throne and the king's authority. Throughout his adventures, Quentin fends off various dangers and perils, in a world where a single misstep can mean the gallows. As well as being a capable and nimble-footed combatant, Quentin has ambitions to win - through gallantry and surefooted combat - a French noblewoman's hand in marriage.

With buoyant spirit Scott wrote The Lady of the Lake, and its extraordinary success justified his expectations. Scott, in speaking of this poem, says, "The ancient manners, the habits and customs, of the aboriginal race by whom the Highlands of Scotland were inhabited, had always appeared to me peculiarly adapted to poetry. The change in their manners, too, had taken place almost within my own time, or at least I had learned many particulars concerning the ancient state of the Highlands from the old men to the last generation. I had also read a great deal, seen much, and hear more, of the romantic country where I was in the habit of spending every autumn; and the scenery of Loch Katrine was connected with the recollection of many a dear friend and marry expedition of former days. This poem, the action of which lay among scenes so beautiful, and so deeply imprinted upon my recollections, was a labour of love; and it was no less so to recall the manners and incidents introduced. The frequent custom of James IV, and particularly of James V, of walking through the kingdom in disguise afforded me the hint of an incident which never fails to be interesting if managed with the slightest address or dexterity."

Set in 1679 during the Scottish populist rebellion known as the Covenanter uprising, The Tale of Old Mortality is one of the outstanding historical fictions of the nineteenth century. Henry Morton of Milnewood is compelled to take up arms against the royalists, who are led by Claverhouse, a true villain in Scottish history who is, nonetheless, one of Scott's most complex characters. The notion that witchcraft faded away with the onset of the scientific revolution is entirely mistaken. Sir Walter Scott wrote this volume for his son-in-law & biographer J. G. Lockhart. It stands in the grand tradition of writing on witchcraft & suggests that magic was alive & well in 19th-century Scotland, as contemporary newspaper reports confirm. Carefully researched, alive with stories drawn from his own & contemporaries' experience, & ranging in subject matter from ghosts & fairies to witches & astrologers, the Letters' inform, enliven, & entertain as they try to wed 19th-century skepticism with evidence which contradicts it. Letters has been a major source of reference ever since it was published.
