Emerging technologies present a challenging but fascinating set of ethical, legal and regulatory issues. The articles selected for this volume provide a broad overview of the most influential historical and current thinking in this area and show that existing frameworks are often inadequate to address new technologies - such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, synthetic biology and robotics - and innovative new models are needed. This collection brings together invaluable, innovative and often complementary approaches for overcoming the unique challenges of emerging technology ethics and governance.

There is no doubt that we're in an era of remarkable scientific advancement. From nanotechnology to synthetic organisms, new developments are poised to radically transform the human experience. Yet, profound growth comes with profound risks: a drone can drop a bomb just as easily as it can deliver your groceries; 3D printers can make personal firearms as well as tools and medical devices, and powerful supercomputers can take down a major financial institution just as easily as they can manage your stock portfolio. In A Dangerous Master, renowned ethicist Wendell Wallach delves into the moral challenges of these advancements, urging both creators and users to address the moral and ethical complexities of rapid technological growth. Despite the promise of scientific innovation, Wallach warns of technology spiraling beyond human control. The book examines resistance to meaningful regulation, while proposing solutions to regain control of our technological future. Wallach's narrative provides a balanced analysis, offering stark warnings alongside hope, compelling us to confront the practical--and moral--dimensions of our creations.
The Library of Essays on the Ethics of Emerging Technologies: 8-Volume Set
Scientific discovery and technological innovation continue to proceed at an accelerating pace, bringing far-reaching benefits as well as ethical, societal and governmental concerns. Information technologies in particular have transformed society in recent years and major developments within other emerging technologies may prove to be equally as monumental. This series demonstrates the breadth of challenges and the difficult adjustments entailed in reaping the benefits of technological innovation while minimizing possible harms, and highlights that the pathways for technological progress are uncertain as new discoveries and convergences between areas of research afford novel, and often unanticipated, opportunities. The collection consists of eight volumes which focus on issues in: sports technologies and human enhancement; medical technologies; information technologies; biotechnology; nanotechnology, geoengineering and clean energy; military and security technologies; and ethics, law and governance. The volumes bring together key articles, all carefully selected by leading scholars in their respective fields, which play a significant role in ongoing debates as well as addressing the cutting-edge issues of futuristic challenges and additional technologies under development. This series provides a one-stop resource for lecturers in this field and an invaluable research tool for scholars, students and libraries.

We live in an age of awesome technological potential. From nanotechnology to synthetic organisms, new technologies stand to revolutionize whole domains of human experience. But with awesome potential comes awesome risk: drones can deliver a bomb as readily as they can a new smartphone makers and hackers can 3D-print guns as well as tools and supercomputers can short-circuit Wall Street just as easily as they can manage your portfolio. One thing these technologies can't do is answer the profound moral issues they raise. Who should be held accountable when they go wrong? What responsibility do we, as creators and users, have for the technologies we build? In A Dangerous Master , ethicist Wendell Wallach tackles such difficult questions with hard-earned authority, imploring both producers and consumers to face the moral ambiguities arising from our rapid technological growth. There is no doubt that scientific research and innovation are a source of promise and productivity, but, as Wallach, argues, technological development is at risk of becoming a juggernaut beyond human control. Examining the players, institutions, and values lobbying against meaningful regulation of everything from autonomous robots to designer drugs, A Dangerous Master proposes solutions for regaining control of our technological destiny. Wallach's nuanced study offers both stark warnings and hope, navigating both the fears and hype surrounding technological innovations. An engaging, masterful analysis of the elements we must manage in our quest to survive as a species, A Dangerous Master forces us to confront the practical, and moral, purposes of our creations.

"An invaluable guide to avoiding the stuff of science-fiction nightmares."--John Gilby, Times Higher Education "Moral Machines is a fine introduction to the emerging field of robot ethics. There is much here that will interest ethicists, philosophers, cognitive scientists, and roboticists."-Peter Danielson, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews "Written with an abundance of examples and lessons learned, scenarios of incidents that may happen, and elaborate discussions on existing artificial agents on the cutting edge of research/practice, Moral Machines goes beyond what is known as computer ethics into what will soon be called the discipline of machine morality. Highly recommended."-G. Trajkovski, CHOICE "...the book does succeed in making the essential point that the phrase 'moral machine' is not an oxymoron. It also provides a window onto an area of research with which psychologists are unlikely to be familiar and one from which, at some point, we may be able to learn quite a lot."-PsycCRITIQUES "Moral Machines represents a valuable addition to, and extension of, the current literature on machine morality. As the development of autonomous artificial moral agents becomes closer to being realized, I suspect that this book will only gain in importance."--Metapsychology

Computers are already approving financial transactions, controlling electrical supplies, and driving trains. Soon, service robots will be taking care of the elderly in their homes, and military robots will have their own targeting and firing protocols. Colin Allen and Wendell Wallach argue that as robots take on more and more responsibility, they must be programmed with moral decision-making abilities, for our own safety. Taking a fast paced tour through the latest thinking about philosophical ethics and artificial intelligence, the authors argue that even if full moral agency for machines is a long way off, it is already necessary to start building a kind of functional morality, in which artificial moral agents have some basic ethical sensitivity. But the standard ethical theories don't seem adequate, and more socially engaged and engaging robots will be needed. As the authors show, the quest to build machines that are capable of telling right from wrong has begun. Moral Machines is the first book to examine the challenge of building artificial moral agents, probing deeply into the nature of human decision making and ethics.
