This book presents a comparative look at the norms and attitudes related to youth violence. It aims to present a perspective outside of the typical Western context, through case studies comparing a developed / Western democracy (Germany), a country with a history of institutionalized violence (South Africa), and an emerging democracy that has experienced heavy terrorism (Pakistan). Building on earlier works, the research presented in this innovative volume provides new insights into the sociocultural context for shaping both young people's tolerance of and involvement in violence, depending on their environment. Die Studie befasst sich auf breiter empirischer Basis mit den vielfältigen Lebenswelten und -realitäten junger Menschen und beleuchtet differenziert die möglichen Zusammenhänge wiederholter Jugenddelinquenz.

Dass die „Integrationsmaschine Stadt” gegenwärtig einer harten Belastungsprobe ausgesetzt ist und dass die soziale Stadt immer größere Regulierungsprobleme zu bewältigen hat, gilt weitestgehend als unstrittig. Es wird offenbar schwieriger das schon immer zerbrechliche Verhältnis von städtischer Integration und Desintegration ohne größere innere und äußere Schäden in einer tragbaren Balance zu halten. Der Band stellt die zentralen Befunde einer stadtsoziologischen Studie vor, die zwischen 2004 und 2008 in drei bundesdeutschen Stadtquartieren durchgeführt wurde. Dabei wird u.a. der Frage nachgegangen, ob und inwieweit die verschiedenen ethnischen Konstellationen in den Quartieren individuelle Wahrnehmungen und Reaktionsweisen, z. B. Gewaltaffinität, Wegzugsbereitschaft oder die Forderung nach Kontrollverschärfung, beeinflussen, begünstigen oder verhindern können.

An international manual is like a world cruise: a once-in-a-lifetime experience. All the more reason to consider carefully whether it is necessary. This can hardly be the case if previous research in the selected field has already been the subject of an earlier review-or even several competing surveys. On the other hand, more thorough study is necessary if the intensity and scope of research are increasing without comprehensive assessments. That was the situation in Western societies when work began on this project in the summer of 1998. It was then, too, that the challenges emerged: any manual, espe­ cially an international one, is a very special type of text, which is anything but routine. It calls for a special effort: the "state of the art" has to be documented for selected subject areas, and its presentation made as compelling as possible. The editors were delighted, therefore, by the cooperation and commitment shown by the eighty-one contributors from ten countries who were recruited to write on the sixty-two different topics, by the con­ structive way in which any requests for changes were dealt with, and by the patient re­ sponse to our many queries. This volume is the result of a long process. It began with the first drafts outlining the structure of the work, which were submitted to various distinguished colleagues. Friedheim Neidhardt of Berlin, Gertrud Nunner-Winkler of Munich, and Roland Eckert of Trier, to name only a few, supplied valuable comments at this stage.

Die Forschung zur Gewalt in modernen westlichen Gesellschaften hat in den letzten Jahren zugenommen. Die Erkl rungen daf r sind zahlreich: tats chlicher Anstieg bei bestimmten Gewaltvarianten, neue Sensibilit ten, R ckkehr alter Gewaltformen, Verlagerung von Gewalt in andere gesellschaftliche Bereiche etc. Bisher fehlt jedoch ein systematischer berblick ber die tats chlichen Entwicklungen. Das vorliegende Handbuch informiert umfassend ber Gewalt als soziales Ph nomen. Dabei wird fast allen Facetten dieses Themas Rechnung getragen: - Sozialstrukturelle Verh ltnisse und Gewalt, - Sozialisation und Lernen von Gewalt, - Gewalterfahrungen und Gewaltt tigkeit, - Gewaltopfer, - Gewalt in gesellschaftlichen Institutionen, - Gewalt durch politische Gruppen, - Gewaltdiskurse etc. In 62 Artikeln von Autorinnen und Autoren aus zehn L ndern liefert der Band ein komplexes, transdisziplin res Bild eines Forschungsfeldes zwischen Ordnung, Zerst rung und Macht.

Das yom Land Nordrhein-Westfalen gegrUndete und getragene "For- schungs- und Entwicklungszentrum fUr objektivierte Lehr- und Lern- verfahren" (FEoLL) ist in mindestens zweifacher Weise mit dem Fak- tor "Zeit" im Bildungswesen besonders verbunden. Zum einen kann die GrUndung des FEoLL an der Wende von den 60er zu den 70er Jahren als Ausweis einer fUr Reformvorstellungen und -versuche im Bildungswe- sen besonders gUnstigen Zeit angesehen werden. Zum anderen sollte durch die GrUndung die wechselseitige EinfluBzeit zwischen wissen- schaftlich-technischer sowie sozialwissenschaftlicher Entwicklung und dem Bildungswesen, zwischen Reformerfordernissen und Reform- prozessen, zwischen ReformmaBnahmen und ihrer Wirkungsfeststellung verklirzt werden. Aufgrund dieser doppelten Beziehung zum Faktor "Zeit" konnen die in diesem Band vorgelegten Analysen zur Bedeu- tung der Zeit bei geplanten Veranderungen im staatlichen Bildungs- wesen auch als Folie fUr die Reflektion der Wirkungsbedingungen, der Wirkungen und der Fehlwirkungen von Institutionen wie dem FEoLL angesehen werden. Den Beitragen dieses Bandes unterliegt ein gesellschaftliches Grundverstandnis, daB es ein entscheidendes Merkmal demokratischer Organisationen ist, zu jeder Zeit Verbesserungen fUr "an der Zeit" zu halten. Zu dieser Auffassung bekennen sich - zumindest deklama- torisch - auch die politischen Entscheidungstrager und die Bil- dungsadministration. Jedoch kommt es in der Praxis von Reformbe- mlihungen zum staatlichen Schulsystem haufig zu Friktionen, die nicht zuletzt durch unterschiedliche Interessen zum Faktor "Zeit" begrlindet sind oder durch unterschiedliche Instrumentalisierungen des Zeitfaktors in Erscheinung treten.
