Two French missionaries -- Jean Marie Latour and Joseph Vaillant -- make their way into the harsh, unexplored, mountainous region of New Mexico in the hope of revivifying there the religion that had been brought by Spanish priests and then left to decay in the hand of an insubordinate and materilistic clergy. Father Latour, first bishop of the diosese, knew how to win the confidence of the Indians and to become a father of the Indians and to become a father indeed to the Mexicans. Slowly and firmly he gained control of the padres of the region, gradually replacing the slothful with men stamped by his own ardor. The cathedral that he built in Santa Fe, using the stones of the region so that it might fit into its surroundings, was the crown of his missionary labor, in which he had succeeded in harmonizing two elements: the Catholic religion and the New Mexican way of life.

A towering work of twentieth-century American literature, Willa Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop tells the story of the French Catholic priest Jean Marie Latour, the first bishop of the diocese of New Mexico, which was created after the Mexican-American War. With his friend and vicar Joseph Vaillant, Latour makes the long journey to the newly annexed territory of New Mexico. Once "the cradle of the Faith in the New World," now old mission churches have fallen into ruin and a reduced priesthood lacks guidance and discipline. Latour and Vaillant encounter a strange and unfamiliar brand of Catholicism, but in time the two priests learn to adjust to the ways of New World Catholics and open their eyes to Native American religious ideas so seemingly distant from their own beliefs. This new annotated edition of Cather's New Mexico masterpiece includes an introductory essay and notes by historian and critic Richard W. Etulain.
Professor St. Peter is not truly old, but he is starting to feel old. He and his wife have moved into an elegant new house, and he struggles to leave his previous study-the spartan attic room where he wrote his eight-volume life's work, a history of the Spanish in North America. Visits from his now-married daughters and their husbands leave him unexpectedly distraught. He begins to feel discomfort with his own life, home, and family. As the professor searches for harmony, he reflects back on an earlier time when his student Tom Outland, an orphan from the Southwest, brought a unique energy and joy into his life. Though Tom was killed in World War I, the impact he had on the professor's family changed their lives in ways both good and bad, and the professor reflects on this as he revisits a notebook from Tom's discovery and exploration of an abandoned cliff dwelling in New Mexico. One of Cather's less well-known novels, The Professor's House is considered a masterpiece by many. Themes of innocence and civilization, friendship and family, intertwine as the professor searches for an answer to his questions about what makes life worth living.

In 1851 Father Jean Marie Latour comes to serve as the Apostolic Vicar to New Mexico. What he finds is a vast territory of red hills and tortuous arroyos, American by law but Mexican and Indian in custom and belief. In the almost forty years that follow, Latour spreads his faith in the only way he knows—gently, all the while contending with an unforgiving landscape, derelict and sometimes openly rebellious priests, and his own loneliness. Out of these events, Cather gives us an indelible vision of life unfolding in a place where time itself seems suspended.
