Penguin Weird Fiction: a celebration of the very best of the weird, a store of novels and tales that for generations have delighted and horrified. A manuscript is found. Filled with small, precise writing and smelling of pit-water, it tells the story of an old recluse and his strange home – and it’s even stranger, jade-green double, seen by that old man on an otherworldly plain where gigantic gods and monsters roam. Soon his earthly abode is no less terrible than this strange vision, as swine-like creatures boil from a cavern beneath the ground and besiege it. But a still greater horror will face the recluse, one more awful than any creature that can be fought or killed. The House on the Borderland, William Hope Hodgson’s great masterpiece of cosmic fear, is an extraordinary novel that defied all accepted conventions of horror writing, forging in an instant a new, weird direction for the form.'Forget vampires and gore . . . this is where the screaming really starts, out in the void, with no one left to hear' Terry Pratchett

English writer William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) wrote a prodigious amount of fiction-weird, adventure, mainstream, and even proto-science fiction-during his relatively brief career, cut short when he died in Belgium during the final stages of World War I. This volume presents the best of his tales and demonstrate the wide range of his short fiction. From the ghost story "The Goddess of Death" (1904) to the posthumously published tale "The Hog," Hodgson is preoccupied with supernatural incursions into our mundane world. "The Hog" is one of the most accomplished tales of the psychic detective Thomas Carnacki. As a seaman in both the Mercantile Navy and the Royal Navy, Hodgson had his fill of life on the sea. Many of his tales deal with the horrors to be encountered in the vast expanse of seas and oceans. "The Voice in the Night" (1907), perhaps Hodgson's most notable weird tale, speaks of the hideous fungi consumed by a shipwrecked couple on a remote island. "The Derelict," "The Mystery of the Derelict," and several other stories deal with other terrors to be met with in such mysterious realms as the Sargasso Sea. William Hope Hodgson was, for many years after his death, a nearly forgotten master of the weird. But in recent decades his literary accomplishments have been increasingly recognized, and this volume puts the very best of his short fiction in the hands of a new generation of readers.

Aeons in the future, Earth's surface faces perpetual night after the failing of the Sun. Humanity is entrenched within the Last Redoubt, a colossal metal pyramid. Beyond the safety of its structure lurk countless unknowable threats. William Hope Hodgson's strange, visionary novel of humanity's struggle for survival in the eternal darkness of the future was first published in 1912, and is widely acknowledged to be one of the foundation works of the 'Dying Earth' subgenre of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Written in a style composed of strange archaisms which fuel the weird sense of disorientation, this cult classic has won the admiration of writers from Brian Aldiss to C S Lewis, who wrote: 'The Night Land gives, like certain rare dreams, sensations we never had before.'

"It was a place shunned by the people of the village, as it had been shunned by their fathers before them. There were many things said about it, and all were of evil. No one ever went near it, either by day or night. In the village it was a synonym of all that is unholy and dreadful." The three self-contained novels in William Hope Hodgson's "elemental" horror trilogy do not share central characters or locations, instead-through transcribed testimonies and "found" manuscripts-they weave narratives of growing dread and unease among sailors in peril, haunted house residents, and unknown monsters from the deep. Enjoy the unspoken horrors of The Boats of the "Glen Carrig," The House on the Borderland and The Ghost Pirates. Curated and edited by C. S. R. Calloway, Horror Historia brings together the most influential monsters and original gothic stories in one blood-curdling collection.

William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was an English author best known for The Night Land (1912) and, this, his second novel, The House on the Borderland. Noted by H. P. Lovecraft as "a classic of the first water," it is considered a literary milestone that signaled a radical departure from the typical Gothic fiction of the late 19th century, ushering in a newer more realistic and scientific cosmic horror that left a marked impression on those who would become the great writers of weird tales of the mid-twentieth century. The story within the story is a hallucinatory account of an old recluse and his very strange house in which he experiences attacks by supernatural swine-beasts, travels to otherworldly dimensions, and bears witness to the destruction of the solar system -- "it is galactic adventure, prophetic fantasy, macabre romance, and drugless trip, and brilliantly unites its many disturbing elements, easily equalling, if not surpassing, all predecessors and contemporaries."

'I had been staying just within the shadow of the exit of the great rift. Now, without volition on my part, I drifted out of the semi-darkness and began to move slowly—toward the House.' Amidst the din of roaring water, in a chasm where a house once stood in an isolated corner of Ireland, a manuscript is discovered entitled The House on the Borderland. Penned by the enigmatic Recluse, it tells of a revelatory descent into the uncanny. For the Recluse seems to have discovered another land and in it another House; a jade-green double of his own in a realm rife with beasts and cosmic beings without name, encroaching on the bounds of reality itself. With a new introduction by Ann VanderMeer exploring why Hodgson’s tale is the ‘perfect embodiment of a weird novel’, this edition of the 1908 cult classic still thrums with the visionary energy which influenced countless writers including H. P. Lovecraft and Terry Pratchett.

A romance of the far future, in which humankind has relocated underground, where it is beset by monsters from another dimension—but love leads on. In the far future, humankind’s survivors huddle below Earth’s frozen surface in a pyramidal fortress-city that, for centuries now, has been under siege by loathsome “Ab-humans,” enormous slugs and spiders, and malevolent “Watching Things” from another dimension. When our unnamed protagonist receives a telepathic distress signal from a woman whom (in a previous incarnation) he’d once loved, he sallies forth on an ill-advised rescue mission—into the fiend-haunted Night Land!“Like certain rare dreams,” C. S. Lewis wrote of Hodgson’s masterpiece, The Night Land can give “sensations we never had before and enlarge our conception of the range of possible experience.” H. P. Lovecraft agreed that this is “one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written.” William Hope Hodgson (1877–1918) was an English poet, sailor, bodybuilder, and weird fiction pioneer whose horror, fantastic, and proto-sf novels—in addition to The Night Land—include The Boats of the “Glen Carrig” (1907), The House on the Borderland (1908), and The Ghost Pirates (1909). He also wrote stories in the Sargasso Sea series, the Captain Gault series, and a series about the occult detective Carnacki.
