Ah You don't take the matter at all seriously " I observed, a trifle annoyed. "Why should I?" asked my friend, Ambler Jevons, with a deep pull at his well-coloured briar. "What you've told me shows quite plainly that you have in the first place viewed one little circumstance with suspicion, then brooded over it until it has become magnified and now occupies your whole mind. Take my advice, old chap, and think nothing more about it. Why should you make yourself miserable for no earthly reason? You're a rising man-hard up like most of us-but under old Eyton's wing you've got a brilliant future before you. Unlike myself, a mere nobody, struggling against the tide of adversity, you're already a long way up the medical ladder. If you climb straight you'll end with an appointment of Physician-in-Ordinary and a knighthood thrown in as makeweight. Old Macalister used to prophesy it, you remember, when we were up at Edinburgh. Therefore, I can't, for the life of me, discover any cause why you should allow yourself to have these touches of the blues-unless it's liver, or some other internal organ about which you know a lot more than I do. Why, man, you've got the whole world before you, and as for Ethelwynn--"

First published in 1917, "Rasputin the Rascal Monk" is a study of Rasputin and his influence over the Russian royal family during the latter years of the Romanov Dynasty. Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (1869 - 1916) was a Russian mystic and holy man famous for his familiarity with the family of Tsar Nicholas II. He was a controversial character, viewed by some as a mystic, visionary, and prophet; and by others as a religious charlatan. Nonetheless, he garnered significant influence in late imperial Russia. He was assassinated by a group of conservative noblemen who opposed his influence over the Tsars in 1916. Contents include: "Why this Book was Written", "The Cult of the 'Sister-Disciples'", "Scandals at the Winter Palace", "How Rasputin Poisoned the Tsarevitch", "The 'Hidden Hand' of Berlin", "Rasputin's Secret Orders from Berlin", "Rasputin's Secret Instructions from Berlin", "The Plot to Spread Epidemics in Russia", "The Mock-Monk Unmasked", etc. Many vintage book such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern edition complete with the original text and artwork.

Very few of the twenty fairy tales included in this volume have been presented before in an English dress; this will doubtless enhance their value in the eyes of the young folk, for whom, principally, they are intended. It is hoped that older readers will find some additional interest in tracing throughout the many evidences of kinship between these stories and those of more pronounced Eastern origin. The translation has been carefully revised by a well-known writer, who has interfered as little as possible with the original text, except in those instances where slight alterations were necessary. The illustrations speak for themselves, and are what might have been expected from the artist who designed those for the "Lullabies of Many Lands," issued last Christmas. November 1895.

Not illustrated.1895 Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXII. THE VERGE OF A DISCOVERY. My first impulse was to call the police, but he noticed my intention, and his hand was laid hurriedly upon my mouth. "There's nothing to fear--I'm not the man," he said. "Make no noise, and keep your own counsel. I can tell you plenty about this, if you care to listen." The words fell dimly and indistinctly upon my ears. I was stunned and speechless--it was as if some vast substance had struck me an annihilating blow, which, while paralyzing my senses to a certain degree, yet left me half oblivious. It was clear we were in a cab, driving aimlessly about London streets at a late hour. It was also true that I had once more seen that fatal, horrible symbol, associated with which were the most terrifying and agonizing events of my life. I could not, however, speak, and it was only by great effort that I retained my courage. My companion stooped and picked up something that had fallen at our feet. It was the paper to which the seal was affixed, that had dropped from my nerveless fingers. Suddenly an icy-cold hand was laid upon my forehead. "Wake up wake up --be a man I've told you to fear nothing with me. We're wasting precious time. Arouse yourself for once in your life " My senses returned as suddenly as they had fled. The horror of feeling his hand--a hand that had in its possession the seal--recalled me. I sat upright and drew to my side of the cab as much as I could. ' Ah " he exclaimed bitterly, ' you are still afraid of me. See here, now," and he leaned across, speaking deliberately and with quiet emphasis, "I may die to-night, but" "What " I exclaimed, "you die to-night?" "Yes," he replied, in the same cool and determined tone. "You seem incredulous, but I am sure. Look " He put his hand to the back of his head a...

These strange facts would never have been placed on record, nor would this exciting chapter of an eventful life have been written, except for two reasons: first, because the discovery I made has been declared to be of considerable importance to scientists, bibliophiles, and the world at large; and, secondly, because it is my dear wife's wish that in order to clear her in the eyes of both friends and foes nothing should be concealed, misrepresented, or withheld.

My proposal of marriage was made to Elma a very few days after she wrote down her startling and romantic story, and a year ago at a little village church in Hertfordshire we became man and wife, there being present at our wedding Madame Heath, my bride's mother, to whom, by my exertions in official quarters in Petersburg, the Czar's clemency was extended, and she was released from that far-off Arctic prison to which she had been sent with such cruel injustice.
