Change Creators and Momentum Maximizers: A different view of management's role
BOOK DESCRIPTIONChange Creators and Momentum MaximizersBy William R. MillerThis is a book about the most critical balancing task that members of management face. The basic premise of this book is that the organizations that will succeed are those in which there are:1) Teams of strong, multi-discipline protagonists, with clearly defined roles, intent on creating change;2) Teams of strong, multi-discipline protagonists, with clearly defined roles, intent on maximizing results under the existing conditions and situation;3) Senior management that understands this necessity, provides the support and measurements both sets of protagonists require, and is then able to achieve just the right balance in their activities to obtain the best possible over all results. In order to provide an illustration of the concept in action, the reader is led through the component organizations of a typical manufacturing company. However, it is important to recognize that the concept developed is equally applicable to many other types of organizations such as governments, religious organizations, educational institutions, etc. Throughout the book, the pervasiveness of core competence as an important management tool is also emphasized. In a postscript, an analogy is drawn to the observation in Chaos Theory that the organism that survives, as the environment is modified, is one that has, contained within it, the proper balance between the chaotic state and frozen state.

Most of us walk through each day expecting few surprises. If we want to better ourselves or our lives, we map out a path of gradual change, perhaps in counseling or psychotherapy. Psychologists William Miller and Janet C'de Baca were longtime scholars and teachers of traditional approaches to self-improvement when they became intrigued by a different sort of change that was sometimes experienced by people they encountered--something often described as a bolt from the blue or seeing the light. And when they placed a request in a local newspaper for people's stories of unexpected personal transformation, the deluge of responses was astounding. These compelling stories of epiphanies and sudden insights inspired Miller and C'de Baca to examine the experience of quantum change through the lens of scientific psychology. Where does quantum change come from? Why do some of us experience it, and what kind of people do we become as a result? The answers that this book arrives at yield remarkable insights into how human beings achieve lasting change--sometimes even in spite of ourselves.
The Bonded Electrical Resistance Strain Gage

The Bonded Electrical Resistance Strain Gage

Experimental stress analysis is an important tool in the overall design and development of machinery and structures. While analytical techniques and computer solutions are available during the design stage, the results are still dependent on many assumptions that must be made in order to adapt them to the problems at hand. One popular method of finding structural and design weaknesses is through the use of the electrical resistance strain gage. These devices are relatively low in cost, easily applied by a reasonably skilled technician, and require little investment in instrumentation (for the general user), yet they yield a wealth of information in a relatively short time period. The information and its validity is, of course, dependent on the training and knowledge of the engineer who plans the tests and reduces the data. In addition to serving as a reference for engineers, this practical, instructive book has a high potential as a textbook for senior and first-year graduate students in engineering and related fields, such as engineering physics and geology.
