The Shakespeare Folios series - offering the absolute authenticity of the First Folio in a totally accessible form. 'A quite wonderful idea... So blindingly obvious, I can't understand why nobody had thought of it before. I will certainly use the texts myself' - Peter Hall This edition accurately reproduces the text of the Shakespeare First Folio (1623), but in modern type. At a stroke the dust of ages is blown away and what Shakespeare actually intended is revealed to modern readers. Now Shakespeareans everywhere - students, actors, directors - can see for themselves what the Folio really says. As a further aid to understanding, on each opposing page the same text appears in a fully modernised version - a useful safety net whenever the Folio becomes problematic. Each volume also contains: - an introduction to the particular play - textual notes - an appendix giving variant versions from the Quarto where appropriate - a facsimile page from the First Folio

This lovely but somewhat disturbing song from Love’s Labour’s Lost uses Shakespeare’s original spelling and is here illustrated with wit and imagination by Peter Hay. When daizies pied, and violets blue,And Lady-smocks all silver white,And cuckoo-buds of yellow hue,Do paint the meadows with delight,The cuckoo then, on every tree ,Mocks marry’d men, for thus sings he,Cuckoo;Cuckoo, cuckoo, -O word of fear,Unpleasing to a married ear!

Hamlet, A Longman Cultural Edition

Hamlet, A Longman Cultural Edition

William Shakespeare; Constance Jordan

From Longman's new Cultural Edition series, Hamlet, edited by Constance Jordan, includes the play and contextual materials from the era of Shakespeare. This edition represents Shakespeare's text as it appears in the most authoritative of early editions, the Folio, published in 1623, and it supplies students with useful footnotes to the interpretation of the text. It also includes brief samples of works by Shakespeare's contemporaries in a section entitled Contexts; which will help students understand the historical setting and cultural ideas that helped shape the meaning of Shakespeare's play. By listening to these voices from the past, students can approach the play with some knowledge of why Hamlet asks the questions he does and of why the character himself, the creation of a distant century, also seems so much a part of our own world. The Longman Cultural Edition series is composed of teaching texts edited by prominent scholars. In addition to the recently published Cultural Editions Frankenstein, Pride and Prejudice, and Othello, titles in the series for this year include Dickens' Hard Times, Beowulf, and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

At the heart of this tragic history is one of Shakespeare's most noble characters, the statesman Brutus, who is caught in a devastating conflict between private affection and public duty. A conspiracy is hatched, one that will have fatal consequences not only for Caesar and the conspirators but for the future history of the ancient world. Brutus is played by John Bowe and Mark Antony by Adrian Lester. Michael Feast is Caesar.

Famously censored by the Master of Revels and then revised—probably by Shakespeare himself—this is the story of Henry VIII’s chancellor, executed for failing to arrange Henry’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon. A collaborative effort, the manuscript includes three pages in what may be Shakespeare’s own handwriting.
