A Critical Examination of Irvin D. Yalom’s Single-Session Consultations
This book explores the single-session work done by Irving Yalom and considers the implications of this work for the current theory and practice of single-session therapy (SST). Due to failing memory and decreasing stamina as he aged, Yalom eventually decided that if he was to continue to offer help to patients, he could only do so by offering them single-session consultations. While it was perhaps reluctant single-session work, it coincided with the continued rise of SST starting with the publication of Moshe Talmon's book in 1990. This book examines Yalom’s work against the growing literature on single-session therapy, covering both what single-session therapists can learn from Yalom’s consultations as well as what they would not want to implement. Dryden closely examines Yalom’s work in these sessions through a single-session mindset and tracks how it impacts the development of SST. This book will be of interest to any single-session practitioners as well as those scholars and followers of Yalom.
Single-Session Therapy and Anxiety: An In-depth Analysis of a Single Session
In this book, Windy Dryden presents how he works with anxiety in Single-Session Therapy (SST). In doing so, he provides a transcript of an actual session he did with 'Elizabeth', who wanted help with health anxiety. Windy provides an in-depth analysis of the session as it unfolded, demonstrating how his approach is tailored to what the client wants to take away from the session and does not follow a manualised approach to health anxiety. In addition, 'Elizabeth's' follow-up questionnaire is presented, which was completed three months after her session with Windy. Finally, Windy reflects on some issues that his work with 'Elizabeth' raises, including her reflections as appropriate, and makes some concluding remarks. This book shows what can be achieved in a short time period with a person experiencing a common form of anxiety. Windy Dryden is Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies at Goldsmiths University of London and is in independent practice. His interests include helping people at the point of need and encouraging therapists to work briefly with clients. He has written or edited over 285 books.

Most clients seeking therapy want to be helped with specific emotional problems with which they are struggling, and yet many therapists are reluctant to offer problem-focused therapy. Efficient Therapy for Specific Client Problems presents the case for such an approach and details how it can be practised efficiently. The book outlines the 26 principles of efficient therapy for specific client problems with clinical examples demonstrating each of the main points. Topics covered include identifying when problem-focused help is appropriate, developing a problem list with the client and setting an agenda for each session, problem assessment, and helping a client find, develop, and implement a solution. The book is highly practical in emphasis with approachable guidelines for helping clients directly with their specific problems and appendices that feature a pre-therapy form, a pre-session form, a session rating form and an end of therapy questionnaire. Designed to be read by therapists, counsellors, counselling and clinical psychologists, and students of these disciplines, this accessible text will be valuable to readers across different levels of experience.
Brief Therapy Informed by the Single-Session Therapy Mindset
In this book, Windy Dryden discusses how brief therapy can be practised informed by the single-session therapy mindset. The book is divided into three parts. In Part 1, Windy presents a personal overview of brief therapy and outlines key elements of the single-session therapy mindset that inform this approach to brief therapy. In Part 2, Windy Dryden discusses his work with Nicole, whom he saw for brief therapy for three sessions. The transcripts of the sessions Windy had with Nicole are included, together with his commentary. Nicole provided a reflection based on a structured questionnaire for inclusion in this book, which appears after the transcripts. Windy Dryden closes the book with reflections and concluding remarks in Part 3.
First Steps in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy
Like the first edition, the second edition of this book is designed to be used by trainee REBT therapists who, as part of their training, are called upon to use REBT in peer counselling with their fellow trainees. In peer counselling, the client is called upon to discuss a real-life concern and be helped with this by their peer therapist. This book provides a step-by-step guide to the practice of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy in peer counselling. It can also be used as a basic introduction to the clinical practice of REBT. The book has been updated to reflect changes in the language and practice of REBT. Windy Dryden is a Fellow of the Albert Ellis Institute and one of its core trainers. He has trained REBT therapists for almost half a century and continues to look for ways to make the practice of REBT more effective and efficient. He has written many books on REBT, including Seven Principles of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (Rationality Publications, 2021).

This book is designed to be used by counsellors and therapists who are new to single-session therapy and who, having had some training in SST, wish to offer this mode of therapy delivery to their clients who are seeking help with specific problems. In this book, Windy Dryden outlines 23 steps that are divided into four parts: (1) the pre-conversation phase, (2) the beginning phase, (3) the middle phase and (4) the ending phase and beyond. While these steps have been presented logically, therapists do not have to use them in this order. The best way to use these steps is to view them as a handy person views their tools in a toolbox. They won't use all these tools but they need to know where they are and when they can be used if needed. Windy Dryden is Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies at Goldsmiths University of London. His goal is to disseminate SST, or what he refers to as ONEplus Therapy. His latest book is Dryden, W. (2025). Single-Session Therapy: An Essential Companion. Onlinevents Publications.

Seizing Moments and Being UsefulIn this book, Windy Dryden charts his development as a single-session therapist by presenting his key articles and chapters on single-session therapy (SST). Beginning with an up-to-date overview of SST, he then presents and comments on his very early work doing REBT-based single sessions that were not informed by the single-session therapy mindset and, presents, for comparative purposes, a session that was informed by this mindset. Developing this theme, he presents a comprehensive outline of the SST mindset and includes an updated chapter exploring the relationship between SST and REBT. Also, included in this book are chapters on the core skills needed to practise SST and Windy Dryden's experiences of practising SST in 'meet-up groups' and in an 'online health service'. Then, he considers the variety of names given to SST as well topics of keen interest to therapists: how to work with clients without 'opening up a can of worms' and how to deal with risk and harm in SST. This book will be of particular interest to those curious about SST who wish to learn from one single-session therapist's journey..

WWW: The Collected Wonderful Words of Windy is a collection of Windy Dryden's 'wise words' and encapsulations of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) drawn from previous publications. It also contains, for the first time, a number of 'little gems' said by Windy Dryden during therapy demonstrations with volunteers, designed to help them deal with their nominated issues in ways that might be considered memorable. In addition to being comprehensive, this book is more logically organised than my previous publications in this genre and is divided into thirty-one parts.

Single-Session ‘One-at-a-Time’ Therapy: A Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy Approach details a specific approach to Single-Session Therapy (SST) known as ‘One-At-A-Time’ (OAAT) Therapy and shows how this can be implemented from a Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) perspective. Windy Dryden argues that OAAT Therapy is a time-efficient, cost-effective means of providing help according to need. Single-Session ‘One-at-a-Time’ Therapy outlines an innovative and experimental approach to improving mental health and will appeal to psychotherapists and counsellors looking for an accessible and authoritative guide to brief therapeutic work.
The Relevance of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy for Modern CBT and Psychotherapy
The Relevance of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy for Modern CBT and Psychotherapy explores the contemporary relevance of this treatment for modern psychotherapy, from the point of view of a leading contributor. First founded in 1955 by Albert Ellis, REBT still has much to offer the field. Despite this, the therapy has been increasingly neglected by cognitive behaviour therapy and other practitioners. To demonstrate its contributed relevance, Professor Windy Dryden outlines in this book his current thinking and practice in regard to REBT. He advocates its key features of flexibility and non-extremeness, and explores what he believes REBT has to contribute to the discussion surrounding contemporary issues in psychotherapy. The Relevance of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy for Modern CBT and Psychotherapy is an excellent resource for CBT and other therapists who would like to know more about the relevance of REBT to their work.
Helping Clients Deal with Adversity by Changing their Attitudes
Helping Clients Deal with Adversity by Changing Their Attitudes: A Concise Therapist Guide provides an outline for therapists wishing to help clients deal with life’s adversities by encouraging them to change their attitudes. Divided in two parts, this book first provides a thorough, but concise, introduction to attitude-based approach to therapy, then applies these ideas to therapy. By redefining established concepts of ‘rational’ and ‘irrational’ beliefs in terms of the ‘rigidity’ and ‘extremity’ of client attitudes, Professor Dryden puts forward a language and an approach that is more acceptable to both clients and therapists. Helping Clients Deal with Adversity by Changing Their Attitudes will be a great asset to clinical and counselling psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists as well as trainees in these areas. It will be particularly of interest to CBT practitioners and students who do not cover REBT in their training, but are looking for a concise guide to how its attitudinal focus can be understood and applied in clinical practice.
Good Practice in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy
Good Practice in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy does exactly what it promises. It helps the Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) therapist to pinpoint areas of good practice enabling them to make progress towards becoming competent practitioners. Instead of focusing on what not to do in practice, this revised second edition instead emphasises what to do. Covering 101 areas of good practice, this thoroughly updated second edition places emphasis on developing and maintaining the therapeutic alliance, how to outline REBT for potential clients so that they can make an informed decision about whether to engage with the service and how to prepare clients to carry out their tasks in the therapy. A new focus is also placed on online therapy. This highly accessible and practical book is an indispensable guide for anyone embarking on a career in the REBT field.

Working Creatively with Obstacles to Client Change in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy
Productive therapeutic change is facilitated when the therapist and client have a good therapeutic relationship, share views on salient therapeutic matters, agree on goals to enhance client well-being, and understand what they each have to do to achieve the goals of therapy. This book will address the obstacles to client change that both client and therapist bring to Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). Addressing these obstacles to client change head on, the book enables both the client and practitioner to move beyond problems in the consulting room and build a more productive relationship, resulting in more effective sessions and assisting in the resolution of underlying problems for which the client has sought help. This updated second edition will move beyond the language of 'resistance' in the first edition to instead reposition the term through the lens of barriers to change. A further emphasis will be placed on online therapy and barriers such as clients not attending as many sessions as a therapist might expect or recommend. This book is essential reading for any practitioner hoping to use REBT more effectively in their day-to-day practice.
