Die Arbeit versteht sich als ein Versuch, den kulturhistorischen Hintergrund und die speziellen Probleme Chinas bei der Offnung zur Welt im 19. Jahrhundert zu erlautern, indem sie die chinesischen Gesandtschaftsberichte untersucht. Diese Berichte dokumentieren auf ihre Weise die ersten Schritte Chinas aus dem Reich der Mitte in die Welt hinaus, den Zusammenprall zweier Wertsysteme und den Wandlungsprozess im Denken der chinesischen Fuhrungsschicht.
