Native Speakers and Native Users

Native Speakers and Native Users

'Native speakers' and 'native users' are terms traditionally used to differentiate between speakers who have acquired a language from birth and speakers who have learnt a second language. This book highlights the problems associated with making such a clear cut distinction. By analysing a range of literature, language uses and proficiency tests, Davies argues that there is no significant difference between native speakers and native users, and emphasises the importance of the Standard Language. Whilst individual native speakers may vary considerably, the academic construct of the native speaker is isomorphic with the Standard Language which is available to both native speakers and native users through education. In this book, Davies explores the 'native user' as a second language speaker who uses language with 'native speaker' competence. This book will be of significant interest to students and researchers working in the fields of second language acquisition and applied linguistics.

This is the story of a birding odyssey, following the authors' quest to smash the world record for the number of species seen in one calendar year. Most people dream of packing in their humdrum city life, selling up and heading off into the unknown for a life of adventure. For Ruth Miller and Alan Davies this dream became a reality, albeit with a twist; they decided to pack in their jobs, sell their house and take on the ultimate birder's challenge. This book is the story of their great expedition, searching for birds from Ecuador to Ethiopia via Argentina, Australia and Arizona. We follow this birding odyssey as they ratchet up the species and the stamps in their passports, sharing in amazing birding experiences such as monkey-hunting Harpy Eagles in the Brazilian rain forest, seedsnipes in the Peruvian highlands and lekking bustards in South Africa, all leading to the ultimate question - will they break the magic 4,000? Written in an accessible style, this book will be of great interest to birders, readers of travel literature, and to people who simply enjoy a good adventure!

??? The ECG is one of the most widely available diagnostic tests used in clinical practice today. This book is intended to build upon the topics covered in Starting to Read ECGs: The Basics thus allowing the reader to enhance their previous knowledge. Additional topics covered include a detailed look at calculating cardiac axis, an area often considered difficult to grasp, and alternative methods such as the various ways the heart rate can be calculated, the different criteria for determining LVH. Technical details about specific cardiac conditions, how to interpret pediatric ECGs, and the effect of medical devices on the ECG will also be discussed. Plentiful diagrams, tables and colour images used throughout to illustrate complex points in a simple and easy to understand way. The key facts section at the end of each chapter highlights the most important information and summary tables are provided to allow the book to be used as a quick reference guide. Each chapter will contain a mind map for revision and to aid dyslexic learners, practice questions and a few practice ECGs to consolidate the readers knowledge. The book tells the practitioner what they need to know clinically and doesn't assume any prior knowledge. It is ideal for junior doctors and clinicians, nurses, paramedics, students and health care professionals involved in the recording of 12-lead ECGs.
Locomotives of the Lancashire Central Coalfield
The old Bridgewater Trustees mineral railways were to become the Central Railways of the huge Manchester Collieries concern, which was formed in March 1929. The landscape with its changing, suddenly abrupt and often fierce gradients was to be a cruel one for these colliery locomotives which were worked virtually constantly to their limits. From Worsley to Linnyshaw Colliery, east of Walkden, the average gradient had been 1 in 52 with the occasional 1 in 30 stretch! The locomotives were varied but post-war included many of the Hunslet-designed Austerity, as well as a series of ex-North Staffordshire Railway locomotives. Alan Davies, in a companion volume to his previous work on Walken Yard itself, tells the story of the locomotives that were based there, were maintained and repaired there and that sometimes finished their working lives at Walkden Yard.

This book is book aims to provide the beginner with a concise, practical and systematic guide to interpreting ECGs. It will serve not only as a starter text but also as an immediate bedside reference manual. Starting to Read ECGs: The Basics begins with fundamentals such as how to perform, record and interpret a normal ECG before progressing onto more complex topics, including what effects anatomical abnormalities of the heart, cardiac and non-cardiac conditions can have on the ECG. Each chapter has been supplemented with a multitude of images and diagrams to illustrate points and ease understanding, and concludes with both a summary of key points to reinforce knowledge and a quiz for reflective learning. Starting to Read ECGs: The Basics is an updated version of that previously published by CriticAir and an essential resource for medical students, junior doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health care professionals involved in the recording and interpretation of ECGs who wish to build their knowledge and confidence.

This book examines the nexus between religion and politics, considered in one of its most controversial aspects. The starting point is the 2001 attack on the United States, which a Canadian commentator ingeniously described as the 'passion of America'. This designation suggested an interesting inquiry into other so-called national passions: the notion of the Christ-nation crucified by evil powers because of its higher virtue. . . . This motif is explored by analysing five modern nationalisms that have employed Christian symbolism in this manner: Poland, France, Germany, Ireland and Palestine. The author investigates the way in which fundamental Christian concepts are distorted and corrupted in the process, and points to the inherent dangers of this form of political self-glorification. Poets, philosophers, novelists and preachers have all played a major part in promoting the idea of the Christ-nation at certain times, mostly in the nineteenth century but also today. Famous examples are Adam Mickiewicz in Poland, Victor Hugo in France, the patriotic Lutherans during the First World War in Germany, Patrick Pearse in Ireland and certain Palestinian nationalist poets today. . . The clash of cultures, religions, nationalisms and civilisations in the world today is ever more strident. The passion narratives of the five nations are interwoven with historical circumstance in order to cast light on the endurance and power of the narratives, to arrive at a final critique and 'tract for the times'.
Coal Mining in Lancashire & Cheshire

Coal Mining in Lancashire & Cheshire

The area of Lancashire and Cheshire can be considered one of the homes of the Industrial Revolution, and it was the abundance of coal close to the surface that literally helped fuel the great growth in cities such as Manchester and Liverpool. With poor roads, it was easier to move coal by water and so Lancashire landowners developed the first canals in Britain. Lancashire coal powered the cotton mills, the steelworks and the ironworks, it powered the locomotives that transported people and goods, and it fuelled the ships that brought raw products to the UK and exported engineering wonders to the rest of the world. This book tells the story of the Lancashire and Cheshire Coalfield, using a selection of rare and previously unpublished images showing both the industry itself and the human face of one of the world's most dangerous jobs.

The first deep shafts sunk at Atherton were by John Fletcher. The family firm of Fletcher, Burrows & Co. sank numerous shafts in the vicinity of the village of Atherton including Gibfield, Howe Bridge and Hindsford. Nationalized in 1947, the collieries were operated by the National Coal Board until the closure of Chanters Colliery in 1966. Howe Bridge was the largest and longest-operated of the local pits and lasted for 109 years, from 1850-1959. Gibfield has a notable claim to fame in that it contained the very first miners' pithead baths but it was the disaster at Pretoria Colliery that made the small coalfield infamous. Four days before Christmas, in 1910, 344 men and boys lost their lives due to a gas explosion underground. There were but three survivors of the disaster. Alan Davies, a local mining expert, and author of The Wigan Coalfield, tells the story in words and pictures of the Atherton collieries.

With his star rising steadily, he died suddenly of a heart attack, alone at home. Adored by the general public, his death was one of the most shocking losses to British comedy of the late seventies, and since then there has never been an actor with the same innocent charm as Richard Beckinsale. Nor did his popularity wane after his untimely death: repeats of the classic sitcoms Porridge and Rising Damp would keep his memory alive throughout the ensuing three decades. The Richard Beckinsale Story is an uplifting, but ultimately sad, tale of the life and death of a great talent. It is the compelling story of a man destined for greatness, but ultimately cut down in his prime.

Assessing Academic English

Assessing Academic English

Alan Davies

The volume offers an explanatory account of the progress of academic language proficiency testing in the UK (and later Australia), from the British Council's English Proficiency Test Battery (EPTB), through the revolutionary English Language Testing Service (ELTS) to the present solution of IELTS. The three stages of academic language testing in the UK over the last 50 years move from grammar through real life to features of language use. At the same time, comparison of predictive validities suggests that all three measures account for very similar shares of the variance (about 10%) and that therefore the choice of an academic language proficiency test is determined only in part by predictive validity: other factors such as test delivery, test renewal in response to fashion, research and impact on stakeholders, and assessment of all four language skills are also important.
An Introduction to Applied Linguistics

An Introduction to Applied Linguistics

This second edition of the foundational textbook An Introduction to Applied Linguistics provides a state-of-the-art account of contemporary applied linguistics. The kinds of language problems of interest to applied linguists are discussed and a distinction drawn between the different research approach taken by theoretical linguists and by applied linguists to what seem to be the same problems. Professor Davies describes a variety of projects which illustrate the interests of the field and highlight the marriage it offers between practical experience and theoretical understanding. The increasing emphasis of applied linguistics on ethicality is linked to the growth of professionalism and to the concern for accountability, manifested in the widening emphasis on critical stances. This, Davies argues, is at its most acute in the tension between giving advice as the outcome of research and taking political action in order to change a situation which, it is claimed, needs ameliorisation. This dilemma is not confined to applied linguistics and may now be endemic in the applied disciplines. The book has been updated throughout and provides an excellent introduction to the problems and issues that arise in the practice of applied linguistics. Key Features: *Surveys current issues in applied linguistics, including the concept of the Native Speaker and the development of World Englishes *Examines the influence of linguistics, cognitive science and philosophy on applied linguistics and makes a contrast with educational linguistics *Proposes that a key issue for the profession will increasingly be the tension between advice and action *Suggests that applied linguistics is a theorising rather than a theoretical discipline. Feedback on the first edition: 'Alan Davies' introductory text forcefully re-echoes the famous Edinburgh series in applied linguistics, which he contributed to in a major way.' Applied Linguistics 'Every discipline coming of age needs to reflect on its origins, its history, its conflicts, in order to gain a better understanding of its identity and its long term objectives. Alan Davies, one of the founding fathers of applied linguistics, is the ideal person for this soul-searching exercise ... Introduction to Applied Linguistics is obligatory reading for students and researchers in applied linguistics, for language professionals and for anyone interested in the link between linguistics and applied linguistics. Applied Linguistics is still a growing field. Key texts and handbooks have appeared in recent years and international applied linguistics conferences and professional associations occur regularly. While Applied Linguistics continues to attract new entrants and to generate new strands of research, there is a need for a clear and concise map of the field. This is the purpose of the Glossary. The author, Alan Davies, is a well-established, well-published authority on applied linguistics. Not a typically dry dictionary, Dr. Davies infuses the alphabetical entries with a touch of humor and thought-provoking context creating an up-to-date, useful, and coherent view of applied linguistics. The Glossary compiles the most ubiquitously used terms in applied linguistics and teacher-training literature. It takes a wide-ranging view of the field, drawing not only on linguistics but including psychology, sociology, education, measurement theory, speech therapy, translation, and language planning. Other features include:*numerous cross-references to key terms;*an introduction, which discusses the difficulty of defining applied linguistics; and*a brief reading list of key text. The primary market is master's student in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, and TESL/TEFL. Undergraduate students, particularly in language fields and in education will also find it helpful, as well as language teachers who have not themselves followed Applied Linguistics courses and who are interested in finding out about the field.

Linguists, applied linguists and language teachers all appeal to the native speaker as an important reference point. But what exactly (who exactly?) is the native speaker? This book examines the native speaker from different points of view, arguing that the native speaker is both myth and reality.
