Traditional fact-checking is insufficient to detect more subtle forms of news slant. Frame-checking alerts students to recognize-and, if necessary, resist-how news frames influence the interpretation of facts and the formation of judgments about topics presented in the news. Like a pair of "x-ray" glasses, frame-checking helps students see the hidden structure of a news story, thus promoting the use of their critical thinking skills to analyze opposing viewpoints and identify subtle forms of news slant. The authors use the term frame-checking to refer to the critical analysis of the narrative strategies used by news outlets to present news stories. In six in-depth lessons, which explore both visual and discursive news frames, Beyond Fact-Checking empowers readers to critically examine, question, and actively engage with the media in deeper, more meaningful ways.

Highlighting the year's most significant independent journalism--including reports on toxic chemicals, climate disinformation, and union victories--Project Censored's State of the Free Press 2025 illuminates issues and raises voices that the establishment press have throttled. State of the Free Press 2025 shows how independent journalism can promote civic engagement and reconnect people who have otherwise lost interest in sensational "news" that distracts and polarizes us. Balancing critical analysis with optimistic vision, the book's diverse contributors champion press freedom and critical media literacy to hold the powerful accountable and promote a more just and inclusive society. State of the Free Press 2025 is a joint production of The Censored Press and Seven Stories Press.

As the United States grapples with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the nation's living legacy of systemic inequalities, and partisan threats to the foundations of democracy, the integrity of news--the focus of Project's Censored's work and this book--has never been more important. State of the Free Press 2024 continues Project Censored's tradition of publicizing the most important stories ignored or obscured by the news establishment, exposing the lies and spin of corporate Junk Food News (frivolous stories that distract the public from actual news) and News Abuse (important stories covered in ways that undermine public understanding) while promoting the best independent journalism, research, and activism. This 2024 edition includes independent investigative reporting on issues and topics that reflect recurring patterns of indirect censorship in corporate news coverage, where the outlets failed to provide the coverage and context that these stories deserved based on their social significance and relevance to current political and cultural debates. Most importantly, this edition helps endow readers with the critical media literacy skills required to hold power to account for distorting or censoring news coverage. State of the Free Press 2024 is a joint production of The Censored Press and Seven Stories Press.

" Censored] should be affixed to the bulletin boards in every newsroom in America. Featuring the top 25 most underreported stories, as voted by scholars, journalists, and activists across the country and around the world, as well as chapters exploring timely issues from the previous year with more in-depth analysis.

Did you know that over a thousand communities in the US are experiencing lead contamination at quadruple the rates found in Flint, Michigan? Or that the US Army has accumulated $6.5 trillion in expenditures that cannot be accounted for? What about the racially biased software used by judges to predict future crimes, or the fossil fuel industry's influence over environmental research? Haven't heard the news? Neither did the rest of the world. That's because these and countless other news items are suppressed or ignored by our nation's "free press" every day. For the past forty-two years, Project Censored has been unearthing the buried stories that corporate media deem unfit to print--and debunking the "fake news" governments and corporations use to consolidate their power--to promote well-informed citizen action and critical media literacy. This year's Project Censored yearbook features: - "The New American Authoritarianism" by Nolan Higdon and Nicholas L. Baham III - "Trump Universe," a graphic chapter by Adam Bessie and Peter Glanting - "Defamation as Censorship in the Social-Media Era" by Elizabeth Blakey - "Still Manufacturing Consent" by Edward S. Herman - "Breaking Through Power" by Ralph Nader Plus Junk Food News and News Abuse and Media Democracy in Action. In a time of "post-truth" fictions and rampant propaganda, Project Censored is on the case, holding the corporate media to account for its misleading spins, convenient lies, and outright censorship.

Every year since 1976, Project Censored, our nation's oldest news-monitoring group, has produced a Top-25 list of underreported news stories and a book dedicated to the stories that ought to be top features on the nightly news, but that are missing because of media bias and self-censorship. A perennial favorite of booksellers, teachers, and readers everywhere, "Censored" is one of the strongest lifesigns of our current collective desire to get the news we citizens need-despite what Big Media tells us. Seven Stories Press has been publishing this yearbook since 1994. The top 25 stories are listed in order of importance and for how neglected these stories were by major media. Top stories in recent years have included "Signs of an Emerging Police State," "Fukishima Nuclear Disaster More Devestating Than Anticipated," "A 'Culture of Cruelty' Along Mexico-US Border," and "Obama's War on Whistleblowers." In additional chapters, scholars and journalists take a critical look at timely issues, such as the US/NATO military-industrial-media empire.

Every year since 1976, Project Censored, our nation's oldest news-monitoring group--a university-wide project at Sonoma State University founded by Carl Jensen, directed for many years by Peter Phillips, and now under the leadership of Mickey Huff--has produced a Top-25 list of underreported news stories and a book, "Censored," dedicated to the stories that ought to be top features on the nightly news, but that are missing because of media bias and self-censorship. Seven Stories Press has been publishing this yearbook since 1994, featuring the top stories listed democratically in order of importance according to an international panel of judges. Beyond the Top-25 stories, additional chapters delve further into timely media topics: The Censored News and Media Analysis section provides annual updates on Junk Food News and News Abuse, Censored Deja Vu, signs of hope in the alternative and news media, and the state of media bias and alternative coveragearound the world. In the Truth Emergency section, scholars and journalists take a critical look at the US/NATO military-industrial-media empire. And in the Project Censored International section, the meaning of media democracy worldwide is explored in close association with Project Censored affiliates in universities and at media organizations all over the world. A perennial favorite of booksellers, teachers, and readers everywhere, "Censored" is one of the strongest lifesigns of our current collective desire to get the news we citizens need--despite what Big Media tells us.
