Ming Wong is the fifth Artist in Residence at the National Gallery. His practice encompasses film, performance, painting and installation. This book will serve as an introduction to Ming Wong’s work and as a record of the artist’s residency at the National Gallery. Texts by Russell Storer and Annabel Jackson will provide an overview of the artist’s past works and a context for his project in the Gallery, alongside new material produced by the artist during his residency. The first book in over a decade dedicated to Wong’s work, this volume will include recent projects by the artist that have engaged with speculative futures, sci-fi aesthetics, Sino-American relations, and cross-gender opera – all popular themes that appeal to audiences today. This publication is the first survey of Katrina Palmer’s career to date, introducing her research-led practice to a broad audience. The book provides an overview of Palmer’s work across a range of media including sculpture, audio environments, printed matter and performance, blending the realms of fact and fiction to interrogate the spaces we inhabit. An introductory essay by Oreet Ashery will explore the key themes present in the artist’s practice, including concepts of loss, violence, the structure of institutions and the role of writing and books. With a selection of short entries on some of Palmer’s previous projects, the publication will also feature new material produced by her during the development of her commission for the National Gallery, with exclusive images of the new work.
