Originally published in 1848, "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is the second and final novel written by Anne Bronte. Considered one of the first feminist novels, it was both instantly successful and highly controversial. The story follows the relationship between Gilbert Markham, a prosperous farmer, and the mysterious widow Mrs. Helen Graham, who takes up residence with only her son and a servant in the nearby tumbledown mansion of Wildfell Hall. Told in a series of letters, Gilbert describes how he falls in love with the elusive Helen and learns of her tragic past. The victim of small town gossip, Helen finally tells Gilbert how she has left her aristocratic and alcoholic husband in order to save her young son from his influence. The novel was far more realistic in both tone and subject matter than other popular novels of its time and boldly challenged the accepted treatment of women in Victorian England. While Bronte rejected the romantic style popular at that time and frankly addressed the obstacles and prejudices faced by women, Helen and Gilbert's story is essentially one of love and hope. A classic of the Victorian era as well as a feminist tale far ahead of its time, "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is a must read for fans of the Bronte sisters. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and includes an introduction by Mary Augusta Ward.

The novel follows Anges and her uneasy path to personal happiness and a romance with Mr. Weston. Agnes, her sister, Mary, and their mother all try to keep expenses low and to bring in extra money, but Agnes is frustrated that everyone treats her like a child. To prove herself and to earn money, she starts working as a governess, teaching children of rich families. Agnes Grey is an autobiographical novel with strong parallels between its events and Anne Bronte's own life as a governess. Anne Bronte was a British novelist and poet, the youngest member of the Bronte sisters literary family. At the age of 19 she left home and worked as a governess. Agnes Grey follows similar path in Anne's eponymous novel. Anne Bronte's other notable works include The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, considered one of the best Bronte novels. After Anne's death, her sister Charlotte prevented re-publication of this hugely successful work and Anne remained not only the youngest, but also least known of the three sisters.

Gilbert Markham is fascinated by Helen Graham, the beautiful and enigmatic woman who has recently moved into Wildfell Hall. He is swift to befriend her and steadfastly refutes the local gossip calling her character and behaviour into question, yet he soon has cause to regret his infatuation, and grave doubts and misgivings begin to arise in his mind. It is only when Helen presents Gilbert with her diary and instructs him to read it that the shocking truth about her past life becomes clear. The first edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was so successful that it sold out in weeks, yet the novel was mired in controversy for its fierce defence of women’s rights and what many contemporary critics viewed as its shocking and immoral subject matter.

Agnes Grey is an 1847 novel written by English author Anne Bront . The novel is about a governess of that name and is said to be based on Bront 's own experiences in the field. It was Bront 's first novel. Similar to her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre, this is a novel that addresses what the precarious position of governess entailed and how it affected a young woman. The Irish novelist George Moore praised Agnes Grey as "the most perfect prose narrative in English letters."

Agnes Grey is the debut novel of English author Anne Bront (writing under the pen name of Acton Bell), first published in December 1847, and republished in a second edition in 1850 The novel follows Agnes Grey, a governess, as she works within families of the English gentry. Scholarship and comments by Anne's sister Charlotte Bront suggest the novel is largely based on Anne Bront 's own experiences as a governess for five years. Like her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre, it addresses what the precarious position of governess entailed and how it affected a young woman. The choice of central character allows Anne to deal with issues of oppression and abuse of women and governesses, isolation and ideas of empathy. An additional theme is the fair treatment of animals. Agnes Grey also mimics some of the stylistic approaches of bildungsromans, employing ideas of personal growth and coming to age, but representing a character who in fact does not gain in virtue. The Irish novelist George Moore praised Agnes Grey as "the most perfect prose narrative in English letters," and went so far as to compare Anne's prose to that of Jane Austen. Modern critics have made more subdued claims admiring Agnes Grey with a less overt praise of Bront 's work than Moore.

The most controversial of the Bront sisters' novels, Anne Bront 's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the story of Helen Graham, a woman who, unique for her time, acts in her own best interest to rise above her personal circumstances to secure a better life for her son. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a powerful and gripping story of oppression, bravery, and love. Considered to be one of the first feminist novels, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was so controversial upon publication that Anne's sister, Charlotte, prevented its re-publication after Anne's death in 1849.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the second and final novel by the English author Anne Bront . It was first published in 1848 under the pseudonym Acton Bell. Probably the most shocking of the Brontes' novels, it had an instant and phenomenal success, but after Anne's death her sister Charlotte prevented its re-publication. Gilbert Markham narrates how a mysterious widow, Mrs Helen Graham, arrives at Wildfell Hall, a nearby mansion. A source of curiosity for the small community, the reticent Mrs Graham and her young son, Arthur, are slowly drawn into the social circles of the village. Initially Gilbert Markham casually courts Eliza Millward, despite his mother's belief that he can do better. His interest in Eliza wanes as he comes to know Mrs Graham. In retribution, Eliza spreads (and perhaps creates) scandalous rumours about Helen. With gossip flying, Gilbert is led to believe that his friend Mr Lawrence is courting Mrs Graham. At a chance meeting on a road Gilbert strikes the mounted Lawrence with a whip handle, causing him to fall from his horse. Though she is unaware of this confrontation, Helen Graham still refuses to marry Gilbert, but when he accuses her of loving Lawrence she gives him her diaries.
