ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The unbelievable friendship between a simple postman and the great poet Pablo Neruda: the mutual dazzling of freedom and creation. The Postman, translated to 25 languages, is already a classic of world literature. Set in the years before Pinochet's dictatorship, this book established Antonio Sk rmeta's reputation as one of the most emblematic Latin American authors and served as the inspiration for the Oscar-winning film Il Postino. Mario Jim nez, a young fisherman, decides to leave his job to become the postman of a tiny island where the only person who receives correspondence is the poet Pablo Neruda. Jim nez admires Neruda and patiently hopes that one day the poet might dedicate a book to him, or at least have more than a short exchange of words and a small tip. His longing is finally rewarded and the two strike up a peculiar relationship. However, the strained atmosphere in Chile during those years brings about a dramatic d nouement.
A collection of the best short stories by the author of the unforgettable novel The Postman. Each of the stories in this book is an extraordinary piece of literature. Love, youth, desire, and freedom, coupled with versatile prose, sensitivity, and a subtle irony that sometimes morphs into dark humor, confirm Antonio Sk rmeta's position as one of the greatest storytellers in contemporary literature. Juan Villoro has selected and written a prologue for this collection, originally published in five books that influenced an entire generation of writers and brought about a renewal of Latin American prose.

It was an immense honor to musically collaborate with the eminent Chilean writer, and National Literature Prize winner, Antonio Sk rmeta. Beautiful and thoughtful lyrics from Antonio serve as the inspiration for the accompanying music that I wrote. This book presents our musical scores with art from superb Chilean and American artists. Deepest thanks and gratitude to artists Elby Huerta, Nora Preperski-Sk rmeta, Amelia C. Joynes, Brian Jacobs, and Clarissa Jakobsons. Additionally, I am very grateful to Mayita Westcott for translating the words of Antonio Sk rmeta into English. Incredible musicians have performed these pieces: the amazing tenor Ricardo Tamura and the accomplished pianist Lucy Arner (piano). This set of songs can be heard on Pandora Radio, YouTube.com, and Spotify.

Boisterously funny and passionate, The Postman tells of young love ignited by the poetry of Pablo Neruda. Set in the colorful, ebullient years preceding the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile, the book has been translated into nearly twenty-five languages around the world.
This "powerful, humane," prize-winning novel of politics, ballet, and a spectacular heist by a reluctant master thief and his eager young protégé, "conjures...a contemporary Santiago, Chile, where the memory of Pinochet's reign and the 'disappearing' of citizens still looms" (Publishers Weekly). With prisons overflowing in Chile, the president declares a general amnesty for all nonviolent criminals. Ángel Santiago, a youth determined to avenge abuse he received in jail, seeks out the notorious bank robber Nicolás Vergara Grey, whose front-page exploits won him a reputation he would rather leave behind. Their plan for an ambitious and daring robbery is complicated by the galvanizing presence of Victoria Ponce, a virtuosic dancer and high-school dropout whose father was a victim of the regime. Praised for his "ability to place a personal story in the context of a national upheaval and make it warm, funny and universal" (San Francisco Chronicle), Antonio Skármeta sets this exuberant love story against the backdrop of the new Chile, free from the Pinochet dictatorship but beholden to the perils of globalization. The Dancer and the Thief, which won Spain's prestigious Planeta Prize, is a remarkable new novel from one of South America's finest storytellers. Reading group guide included.

Winner of the UNESCO Tolerance Awards and the Jane Addams Children's Book Award, and an Americas Award Commended Title Life is simple for Pedro -- he goes to school, does his homework and, most importantly, plays soccer. But when the soldiers come and take his friend Daniel's father away, things suddenly become much more complicated. Why, for instance, do Pedro's parents secretly listen to the radio every evening after dinner? And why does the government want Pedro and his classmates to write compositions about what their parents do in the evening? Humorous, serious and intensely human, this powerful picture book by Chilean writer Antonio Skarmeta presents a situation all too familiar to children around the world. And for children it provides food for thought about freedom, moral choices and personal responsibility. Correlates to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts: CCSS. ELA-LITERACY. Häistä on tulossa ennennäkemätön spektaakkeli. Mahtihäistä kehkeytyy laaja poliittinen selkkaus, johon sekaantuu lopulta miltei puoli Eurooppaa. Chileläinen Skármeta kirjoittaa älykkäästi ja satiirisesti 1900-luvun alun kuvitteellisesta saaresta. Kiehtovan ja humoristisesti kerrotun, tositapahtumiin pohjautuvan tarinan käänteet tempaavat lukijan vastustamattomasti mukaansa. Runoilijan häät voitti vuonna 2001 arvostetun ranskalaisen Médicis-palkinnon. Kirjasta on tehty useita elokuvatarjouksia, joista kirjailija on toistaiseksi kieltäytynyt.

On 11 September 1973 General Augusto Pinochet led a military coup against the elected government of Salvador Allende, bombing La Moneda, the presidential seat in Chile's capital Santiago where the President died resisting the attack. The National Football Stadium became a torture centre, where supporters of Allende's Popular Unity government were rounded up, tortured, and - like the popular singer Victor Jara - brutally killed. Chile's Nobel-prize winning poet Pablo Neruda also died in mysterious circumstances immediately following the coup. Thousands of Chileans disappeared, now known to have been murdered, and many others went into exile, including the writer Antonio Sk rmeta, who was completing his first novel I Dreamt the Snow was Burning, set in the weeks just before the coup, where football, Neruda's poetry, the growing tensions of the period clash around the inhabitants of a cheap Santiago boarding house, from petty crooks to fervent supporters of Popular Unity. Into their midst comes a football-mad country boy longing only to be a massive star - and of course to score with the girls." Sk rmeta strikes a brilliant balance between realistic portrayals of daily life and stream-of-consciousness scenes... His ability to amplify emotional undercurrents and capture the raw poetry of everyday language is impressive. Journalist Malcolm Coad deserves praise for the lucidity and electrical vibrancy of his translation." SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
