Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish physician and writer known around the world for his stories about detective Sherlock Holmes, which all but created the literary field of crime fiction and made the name Sherlock Holmes synonymous with detectives. Aside from the Sherlock Holmes stories, he was a prolific writer whose other works include science fiction stories, historical novels, plays and romances, poetry, and non-fiction. In December 1893, in order to dedicate more of his time to more "important" works-his historical novels- Conan Doyle had Holmes and Professor Moriarty apparently plunge to their deaths together down the Reichenbach Falls in the story "The Final Problem." The public was having none of it, however, and there was an outpouring of support for bringing Sherlock Holmes back, leading Conan Doyle to write a new story in 1901, The Hound of the Baskervilles. A Study in Scarlet is the first detective mystery novel written by Conan Doyle to feature Sherlock Holmes, who is now the most famous literary detective characters. But back then, he barely garnered any interest. Conan Doyle wrote the novel at the age of 27 in less than three weeks. Although Conan Doyle wrote 56 short stories featuring Holmes, A Study in Scarlet is one of only four full-length novels in the original canon. To get an idea of how influential the Sherlock Holmes' stories and novels became, A Study in Scarlet was the first work of fiction to incorporate the magnifying glass as an investigative tool. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes to his companion Doctor Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it."

El as acept amablemente. A young Sussex gentleman named John Openshaw has a strange story: in 1869 his uncle Elias Openshaw had suddenly come back to England to settle on an estate at Horsham, West Sussex after living for years in the United States as a planter in Florida and serving as a Colonel in the Confederate Army. Not being married, Elias had allowed his nephew to stay at his estate. Strange incidents have occurred; one is that although John could go anywhere in the house he could never enter a locked room containing his uncle's trunks. Another peculiarity was that in March 1883 a letter postmarked Pondicherry, in India, arrived for the Colonel inscribed only "K. K. K." with five orange pips enclosed. More strange things happened: Papers from the locked room were burnt and a will was drawn up leaving the estate to John Openshaw. The Colonel's behaviour became bizarre. He would either lock himself in his room and drink or he would go shouting forth in a drunken sally with a pistol in his hand. On 2 May 1883 he was found dead in a garden pool.

Through the Magic Door by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a study of English literature that contains several fascinating essays on books including the following exerpt: I care not how humble your bookshelf may be, nor how lowly the room Which it adorns. Close the door of that room behind you, shut off With it all the cares of the outer world, plunge back into the soothing company of the great dead, and then you are through the magic portal into that fair land Whither worry and vexation can follow you no more. You have left all that is vulgar and all that is sordid behind you. There stand your noble, silent comrades, waiting in their ranks. Pass your eye down their files. Choose your man. And then you have but to hold up your hand to him and away you go together into dreamland.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third novel featuring Sherlock Holmes. Throughout his life Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote four novels and in excess of 50 stories starring the famous fictional detective. This mystery is largely set on the Darmoor in Devon, which is in England's countryside. It tells the story of a family cursed by a legend, the fearsome hound of the Baskervilles, which has a supernatural origin. Large portions of this novel are told with only Doctor Watson in attendance, but never fear, Sherlock Holmes does return. It is a fantastic read that is challenging to solve without the help of Mr. Holmes and the good Doctor. The annotations are offered as an aid to the reader with some of the more dated language for this fabulous story. This is truly a classic mystery novel and will be enjoyed for generations to come.
