La philosophie, telle que la comprend et la pratique Schopenhauer, est une chasse aux illusions. Dans l'Essai sur le libre arbitre, traduit en 1877 et jamais r dit depuis, il d montre que l'homme est incapable d'agir par lui-m me et il rel gue au rang de mirage cette myst rieuse facult appel e libre arbitre. L'homme est prisonnier de lui-m me. La seule libert dont il puisse disposer est une connaissance approfondie de soi. Le on que Freud, qui avait bien lu Schopenhauer, retiendra et qu'il appliquera sur un plan th rapeutique. Vision aussi tr s moderne de la condition humaine. Les hommes sont responsables de ce qu'ils font mais innocents de ce qu'ils sont. A l'homme d'assumer le hasard de ce qu'il est. Le caract re est un destin. A la question sommes-nous libres ? L'homme ordinaire r pond sans ambigu t oui puisque nous pouvons faire ce que nous voulons. Si l'homme peut faire ce qu'il veut mais sa volont est-elle libre ? Peut-il choisir indiff remment en toute objectivit quand deux choix se pr sentent lui ? De quoi d pend la volont elle-m me ? Ma volont ne d pend absolument que de moi seul Je peux vouloir ce que je veux: ce que je veux, c'est moi qui le veux . Schopenhauer d crit ainsi l'esprit na f qui se contente de regarder les choses la surface. Mais de quoi d pend la volont elle-m me ?, demande le philosophe. Dans son Essai sur le libre arbitre, le penseur de Francfort pose d'entr e de jeu comme solution l' nigme du libre arbitre que l'homme est un tre d termin une fois pour toutes par son essence, poss dant comme tous les autres tres de la nature des qualit s individuelles fixes, persistantes, qui d terminent n cessairement ses diverses r actions en pr sence des excitations ext rieures. Ainsi, Schopenhauer montre que l'action de chacun est r gie la fois par des motifs (qui sont ext rieurs l'homme et dont il n'a aucun contr le) et par son moi c'est dire son essence (inchangeable et fix e pr alablement).

The only way for a wise man to achieve relief from such suffering, argues Schopenhauer, is for him to renounce the impulses of the Will and thereby control its negative influence over his wellbeing. These are two provocative works, made all the more readable by Schopenhauer's pungent wit and animated style. When asked where he wanted to be buried, Schopenhauer said, "Anywhere; they will find me. The pessimist Schopenhauer had a sufficiently upbeat conviction that people would eventually pay attention to his message. This conviction never failed him throughout a lifetime of disappointments and neglect in places where he might have most valued appreciation; it only began to show some signs of being justified a few years before his passing. This unanimity does not exist with regard to his philosophical views; he is one of the philosophers who is most frequently misunderstood. He has already been thoroughly explained and criticized, and this will undoubtedly happen again. In practically all of the subsequent articles, but especially in the "Metaphysics of Love," to which the reader may be referred, is evident what the tendency of his underlying philosophical premise was, his metaphysical explanation of the universe.
