Brian Wilson

This is the Brian Wilson story, told for the first time in his own words.

They say there are no second acts in American lives, and third acts are almost unheard of. That's part of what makes Brian Wilson's story so astonishing. As a cofounding member of the Beach Boys in the 1960s, Wilson created some of the most groundbreaking and timeless popular music ever recorded. With intricate harmonies, symphonic structures, and wide-eyed lyrics that explored life's most transcendent joys and deepest sorrows, songs like "In My Room," "God Only Knows," and "Good Vibrations" forever expanded the possibilities of pop songwriting. Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and-finally-thriving. Now, for the first time, he weighs in on the sources of his creative inspiration and on his struggles, the exhilarating highs and the debilitating lows. I Am Brian Wilson reveals as never before the man who fought his way back to stability and creative relevance, who became a mesmerizing live artist, who forced himself to reckon with his own complex legacy, and who finally completed Smile, the legendary unfinished Beach Boys record that had become synonymous with both his genius and its destabilization. Today Brian Wilson is older, calmer, and filled with perspective and forgiveness. Whether he's talking about his childhood, his bandmates, or his own inner demons, Wilson's story, told in his own voice and in his own way, unforgettably illuminates the man behind the music, working through the turbulence and discord to achieve, at last, a new harmony.

This is a very funny parody (for both adults and their children) of the famous poem, "They're changing the guard at Buckingham Palace", published by A. A. Milne in 1924. The book is well illustrated in colour and can be used for educational purposes as well. It features the crowning of a new King. The book is in hardcover and is one of a number of humorous children's books written by Brian Wilson. The other books are The owl and the pussy cat -parody, and The night before Christmas parody.

On the 4th May 1866 the General Grant, a 179-foot clipper, came to grief on the cliffs of the Auckland Islands of New Zealand. At the time it was travelling from Melbourne to London carrying 83 passengers and reportedly 2,576 ounces of gold? Robbie, a Southland (New Zealand) sheep farmer suspects that his uncle a famous treasure hunter salvaged this treasure but the secret dies on his uncle's deathbed. He inherits his uncle's estate but is also left with the unanswered question about the General Grant. Robbie's obsession to resolve this mystery takes him down a dangerous path where he brushes with unsavoury characters who have more than a passing interest in the gold. Did his uncle salvage the gold and who really was his uncle? This thriller involves historical events woven into a work of fiction and is of particular interest to those in New Zealand. Australia and England. In the early history of New Zealand and Australia, ships took the dangerous but fastest route to England sailing west to east through the Southern Ocean. Many ships disappeared hitting icebergs, coming to grief around the horn or ending up as wrecks like the General Grant on sub-Antarctic islands. My book covers the laidback, rural, New Zealand lifestyle of a Southland farmer caught up in this mystery. In reading this book one will not only enjoy a gripping thriller but will be left learning what is known about the General Grant and deciding whether the treasure has been salvaged.

Over the past decade the social role of sport has received unprecedented attention, as global leaders ranging from politicians to high-profile celebrities have championed sport as a tool for promoting peace. In many areas, sport has successfully drawn attention to such worthy causes as conflict resolution, HIV prevention, environmental initiatives, and improved international relationships. Yet although sport can be a powerful tool for social good, it continues to reflect and reproduce social inequalities in ways commonly overlooked by those invested in the sport-for-peace movement. In this timely new analysis, Brian Wilson uses critical sociological theories to investigate the complex-and at times controversial-relationship between sport and peace.

Systems: Concepts, Methodologies and Applications Second Edition Brian Wilson Department of Systems and Information Management Lancaster University, UK The result of many years? experience, this book, now extensively revised and updated, emphasizes the application of systems concepts and methodologies that have been developed at Lancaster University. In particular the book is about problem solving and the relationship between theory and practice. Complementary to Systems Thinking, Systems Practice by Peter Checkland (Wiley, 1981), which has become a classic in the field, this book shows how systems ideas can be used to cope with real-life problems. Reviews of the first edition? ? an excellent book which provides a synthesis of the action-research undertaken by the well-known Department of Systems, University of Lancaster ? Wilson?s lucid style of writing and the historical perspective of the Lancaster learning experience provide a strong contextural case for the concept of a human activity system to investigate ?badly-defined? [Checkland?s ?soft?] systems. Chris Beaumont, Journal of the Operational Research Society, January 1985 ? This volume, expertly compiled by Brian Wilson, is the latest and probably the clearest statement in book form of the philosophy of that department [Department of Systems, University of Lancaster] ? a volume which deserves to be read ? E. R. Carson, Kybernetes, 12, 1985 ? Systems: Concepts, Methodologies and Applications is Wilson?s account of his professional life at Lancaster since then (1966). His careful reflection on the work of so many years deserves attention. Trevor Williams, Futures, December 1985

Golf is a major global industry. The sport is played by more than 60 million people worldwide and there are more than 32,000 courses in 140 countries across the globe. This book looks at the power relationships in and around golf, examining whether the industry has demonstrated sufficient leadership on environmental matters to be trusted to make weighty decisions with implications for public and environmental health. The first comprehensive study of the varying responses to golf-related environmental issues, it is based on extensive empirical work, including research into historical materials and interviews with stakeholders in golf such as course superintendents, protesters and health professionals. The authors examine golf as a sport and as a global industry, drawing on and contributing to literatures pertaining to environmental sociology, global social movements, institutional change, corporate environmentalism and the sociology of sport.
