English summary: Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) was ubiquitous in the French music scene during his career of exceptional longevity. Prolific composer, virtuoso pianist and organist, founder of the Societe Nationale de Musique, conductor, teacher, poet, librettist, and indefatigable letter writer, this polymath is also famous for his assertive stances, a sharp pen, and honest talk. His fighting spirit made him a spokesman for the composers of his generation. For over fifty years, from the early 1870s to his death, his articles appeared in newspapers, and this edition unearths them all. It brings together 435 texts written by Saint-Saens known to-date and places them chronologically. This book highlights the thoughts of a musician, his tastes and artistic choices, while revealing those of his contemporaries, as well as their aesthetic and political commitments.
