Carroll John Daly

They called him Mr. Strang-a man with a ledger of sins and a private justice all his own. In Volume 2 of The Legion of the Living Dead: The Complete Cases of Mr. Strang, Carroll John Daly returns to the city's gutters and gilded clubs for another savage, high-voltage run of pulp justice. Here are streets where parole is a business, politicians are bargains, and racketeers buy their freedom with blood. When a battered ledger names the guilty and the prosecutors will not act, Strang assembles a fringe army-men who, having little to lose, will follow his merciless law. Against him stand slick bosses, crooked officials, and trigger men who never miss-and one by one Daly's terse, relentless chapters pit conscience against corruption, cunning against cruelty. This volume gathers the hardest of Strang's cases: a ledger that can topple empires, a bride stalked by vengeance, and the grim, steady machinery of a one-man vendetta that asks whether the ends ever justify the means. Gritty, moral, and uncomfortably persuasive, these are pulp stories at their fiercest-fast, cold, and impossible to put down.

With his devilish grin and unforgiving hand, Satan Hall strikes terror into the hearts of criminals who know they are living on borrowed time. Race Williams returns Originally appearing in the pages of Black Mask Magazine, author Carroll John Daly pioneered the hard-boiled detective P. I. story and perfected the genre with his classic character, Race Williams. Apart from the novel-length Race Williams stories, these classic hard-boiled thrillers have rarely been reprinted, if ever. Volume 7 contains 16 Race Williams stories, all from 1944-55, as Daly closed out his most popular series with a bang. It's also prefaced by an all-new, scholarly introduction by Professor Brooks E. Hefner of James Madison University. Unremembered Murder: The Collected Hard-Boiled Stories of Race Williams, Volume 7 concludes the most important series published in years on the history of the Hard-Boiled Detective story.

The first hard-boiled detective character, "Three-Gun" Terry Mack is collected for the first time. This groundbreaking series from the pages of Black Mask magazine set the template for all Black Mask authors to follow. Written by Carroll John Daly, Terry Mack debuted just two months prior to Daly's most famous creation, Race Williams. Williams' popularity with Black Mask readers doomed Terry Mack after just two stories, but Daly revisited the character a few years later for a full-length novel, The Man in the Shadows. This edition contains both Terry Mack short stories, along with The Man in the Shadows, which has never before been reprinted. Includes an all-new introduction by Evan Lewis.

Picking up from where our last issue left off, we have another group of crime stories written especially for us. Starting with ex-police detective Lissa Marie Redmond whose short fiction has appeared in anthologies like Akashic's Buffalo Noir and whose debut novel will be out in February 2018, we move along to novelist Andrew Welsh-Huggins, author of the Andy Hayes PI series. Then we have a chilling new tale by short story specialist Nick Kolakowsi, followed by this issue's featured writer, Bill Crider, who takes us to Blacklin County, Texas, where he treats us to a new story starring everyone's favorite sheriff, Dan Rhodes. Tim Lockhart's debut novel came out earlier this year amidst a lot of buzz and he's here with a very dark tale indeed. Next we offer a taste of J. J. Hensley's fast-paced writing with an airborne story as we await the premiere of a new series early next year. Our trip to the past brings us to the legendary writer Carroll John Daly and his no-holds-barred character Race Williams, who never shot any man that didn't deserve it. We close out the issue with a story strong with irony by Ben Boulden. Throw in a terrific column by J. Kingston Pierce and you've got another issue of Down & Out: The Magazine.
