Hans mor var tyska och hans far amerikansk soldat. Pappan återvände med familjen till USA 1923, till Los Angeles. Charles Bukowski fick sin första novell publicerad när han var 24 år och sina första dikter som 35-åring. Romandebut gjorde han med Postverket när han var 51. Vid sidan av sitt skrivande hade han ett otal jobb. Längst var han anställd på Posten i Los Angeles. Under sin livstid gav han ut över 40 böcker. Den 9 mars 1994 dog han som 73-åring i San Pedro, Kalifornien. Septuagenarian Stew gav han ut 1990 och Betting on the Muse kom postumt 1996.
