In Volume II of Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote; or, The Adventures of Arabella, Arabella’s romance-shaped imagination collides ever more dramatically with the realities of eighteenth-century society. Convinced that honour, jealousy, captivity, and heroic devotion govern the world around her, she interprets every encounter through the grand narratives of the French romances she adores, often with bewildering consequences for those who attempt to guide her towards common sense. Celebrated by Samuel Johnson and admired by Henry Fielding, Lennox’s novel is both witty and deeply perceptive, exploring the power of literature to shape not only our dreams but our understanding of the world itself. At its centre stands Arabella, a heroine of striking intelligence and independence, whose moral seriousness and imaginative conviction set her apart from those around her. Presented here in its original two-volume form, this P-Wave Classics edition offers a carefully established text based on the 1752 edition, with modernised spelling for readability. The introduction, essay on The World of French Romance, and Glossary of the Romance World appear in Volume I. Edited with notes and an introduction by L. A. Davenport.

First published in 1752, Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote; or, The Adventures of Arabella is one of the great comic novels of the eighteenth century. In Volume I of this restored two-volume edition, Arabella, the daughter of a marquess, forms her understanding of life and love from the heroic romances of seventeenth-century France. Convinced that noble suitors, desperate rivalries, and perilous adventures await her, she moves through the modern world guided by the logic of an earlier age, leaving confusion and fascination in her wake. Celebrated by Samuel Johnson and admired by Henry Fielding, Lennox’s novel is far more than a lively parody. It is a subtle and perceptive exploration of how reading shapes imagination, expectation, and desire, and of the freedoms and constraints placed upon women in eighteenth-century society. Arabella emerges as one of the most original heroines in English fiction: intellectually formidable, morally serious, and magnificently out of step with her time. This P-Wave Classics edition restores the novel in its original form, presenting a carefully established text based on the 1752 edition, with modernised spelling for clarity. Volume I includes a new introduction, an essay on The World of French Romance, and a detailed Glossary of the Romance World, offering readers a rich guide to the literary universe that shaped Arabella’s mind. Edited with notes and an introduction by L. A. Davenport.
The Female QuixoteOr The Adventures Of Arabella Vol. I (Edition1)
The Female Quixote Or The Adventures Of Arabella Vol. I focuses on a young woman shaped by the influence of romantic novels, which distort her understanding of love and relationships. Raised in isolation, her sheltered life and excessive exposure to dramatic love stories shape her unrealistic expectations about romance. This leads to frequent misinterpretations and misunderstandings about men and their intentions. As Arabella interacts with those around her, including a man she mistakenly believes to be her admirer, her confusion only deepens. The narrative presents a humorous critique of how societal norms and female desire can intertwine, exploring how one s perception of love can clash with reality. Arabella s insistence on following the romantic conventions she s read about leads to her struggles in navigating real-world relationships, particularly when they don t conform to the ideals she s adopted. Ultimately, the story examines the impact of romantic ideals on personal identity and social expectations, while offering a satirical view of a woman s place within a society shaped by such ideals.

The Female Quixote (1752) is a novel by Charlotte Lennox. A parody of Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote, Lennox’s novel was an immediate critical and commercial success. Boosted by praise from Samuel Johnson, Henry Fielding, and Samuel Richardson, The Female Quixote launched Lennox’s career as a leading author of English plays, poetry, and novels. Although she failed to regain her early heights as an author, Lennox and her work have undergone positive reappraisal by twentieth century feminist scholars, securing her long-underrecognized reputation as an important precursor to Jane Austen and countless other writers. Raised in a remote English castle by her father, Arabella makes up for a lack of formal education with an endless appetite for French romance novels. Although exceedingly intelligent, her lack of experience and overactive imagination lead her to fantasize about the world outside. Envisioning a life of adventure and romance, she receives a rude awakening when, upon the death of her father, she is to be left his estate on the condition she marry her cousin Glanville. Making her way to London via Bath, Arabella makes a positive impression on the young gentleman, who recognizes her innocence but remains determined to love her. As he attempts to educate her on the realities of city life, his friend Sir George Bellmour tries to take advantage of her through a courtship veiled in the chivalry of her beloved novels. When a case of mistaken identity leads to Arabella being gravely injured, Glanville is forced to decide whether the young woman he cares for will ever manage to come to terms with their shared reality. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

The Female Quixote or, The Adventures of Arabella by Charlotte Lennox. Two Volumes in One. Revised and Corrected. The Female Quixote; or, The Adventures of Arabella is a novel written by Charlotte Lennox imitating and parodying the ideas of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published in 1752, two years after she wrote her first novel, The Life of Harriot Stuart, it was her best-known and most-celebrated work. Arabella, the heroine of the novel, was brought up by her widowed father in a remote English castle, where she reads many French romance novels, and imagining them to be historically accurate, expects her life to be equally adventurous and romantic. When her father died, he declared that she would lose part of her estate if she did not marry her cousin Glanville. After imagining wild fantasies for herself in the country, she visits Bath and London. Glanville is concerned at her mistaken ideas, but continues to love her, while Sir George Bellmour, his friend, attempts to court her in the same chivalric language and high-flown style as in the novels. When she throws herself into Thames in an attempt to flee from horsemen whom she mistakes to be "ravishers" in an imitation of Cl lie, she becomes weak and ill. This action might have been inspired by the French satire The Mock-Clielia, in which the heroine "rode at full speed towards the great Canal which she took for the Tyber, and wherein to she threw her self, that she might swim over in imitation of Clelia whom she believed herself to be.
