Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s progressive views on feminism and mental health are powerfully showcased in her two most famous stories. The Yellow Wallpaper skillfully charts one woman's struggle with depression whilst Herland is an entertaining imagining of an all female utopia. Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library; a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover. This edition is introduced by journalist and author Lucy Mangan. Confined to her attic bedroom and isolated from her newborn baby, the nameless narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper keeps a secret diary in which she records the sprawling and shifting patterns of the room’s lurid yellow wallpaper as she slowly sinks into madness. This chilling story is based on the author’s own experience of depression. In Herland, a trio of men set out to discover an all-female community rumoured to be hidden deep in the jungle. What they find surprises them all; they’re captured by women who, for two thousand years, have lived in a peaceful and prosperous utopia without men.

The Man-Made World (1911) is a sociological study by American author and feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Inspired by her work as a social reformer and advocate for women’s suffrage, Gilman sought to write a work of nonfiction that explained the effects of patriarchy not only on the lives of women, but on the structure and health of society at large. In the beginning, Gilman observes that though biology naturally attributes motherhood and fatherhood to women and men respectively, there is no evolutionary explanation for the widespread control of men over all other human activities. This inequity, Gilman explains, is what she means by the term “Androcentric Culture,” a culture organized by men, for men. Having established her thesis, Gilman dedicates chapters to such topics as the family, health, art, sports, religion, education, government, economics, and warfare in order to observe the impact of male domination on each. Ultimately, Gilman asks what, if anything, will men lose if women are granted the rights and responsibilities they have no reason not to share. The Man-Made World is a thorough and powerful experiment in sociological thought and a groundbreaking work of feminist nonfiction. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Man-Made World is a classic of American literature and nonfiction reimagined for modern readers.

Herland (1915) is a utopian novel by American author and feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Herland was originally published in The Forerunner, a monthly magazine edited by Gilman, before going out of print for the next several decades. The novel was republished with an influential introduction by scholar Ann J. Lane in 1979 and has since been recognized as an important work of science fiction written by a leading feminist of the early twentieth century. A sociologist and his two friends embark on an expedition to discover a rumored land where a lost civilization of women lives apart from the rest of the world. They journey by plane and, upon landing, are quickly captured by a group of women. Taken to town, the men are held in a central fortress where they are treated well and encouraged to learn more about the women’s culture in order to assimilate. They are taught the history of the land, which has been without men for two thousand years, and learn that the women are able to reproduce asexually. Although they recognize the utopian qualities of the society and despite being impressed by the beauty and order of its structures, the men struggle to live without presupposed notions of gender and patriarchy. When an escape attempt goes awry, they are forced to abandon their prejudices, joining the society through marriage. When one of the group fails to respect their hosts’ ideals of gender equality, however, the men are forced to make a decision that could endanger the continued existence of the utopia. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland is a classic of American literature and science fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Suffrage Songs and Verses (1911) is a collection of political poems by American author and feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Inspired by her work as a social reformer and advocate for women’s suffrage, Gilman turned to poetry as a means of supporting the cause of suffragists everywhere. Although she is widely recognized for her novels, short stories, and nonfiction, Gilman’s poetry showcases her command of language and fiery passion for the political and social advancement of women. “She Walketh Veiled and Sleeping” opens the collection with an image of latent power, a woman “[s]low advancing, halting, creeping…to the hour” of her liberation. In “Locked Inside,” Gilman echoes the trope of poetry as a voice imprisoned—explored by such poets as Ovid, Coleridge, and Dickinson—to envision a woman who “beats upon her bolted door, / With faint weak hands,” barred from the life of the world she not only desires, but desperately needs. In “Boys Will Be Boys”—a poem with a message for our contemporary awakening to the violence perpetrated by men against women—Gilman argues that women must turn to “love and truth” rather than “warfare” in order to have their way. Other poems in Suffrage Songs and Verses explore the nature of motherhood, the institution of marriage, and the need to elevate individual identity beyond the confines of gender. Gilman’s work as a poet proves a substantial contribution to both the suffragist cause and the vibrant tradition of political poetry in twentieth century literature. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Suffrage Songs and Verses is a classic of American literature and poetry reimagined for modern readers.

The Home: Its Work and Influence (1903) is a sociological study by American author and feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Inspired by her work as a social reformer and advocate for women’s suffrage, Gilman sought to write a work of nonfiction that explained the role of the home as a human institution, as well as to address the problems and inequities of home life—especially for women. In the beginning, Gilman argues that “[e]very human being should have a home.” The role of the home in human society, she claims, is not only to provide safety and comfort, but to facilitate the productivity, creativity, and individuality of every person. Despite this, the home has evolved far slower than all other human institutions, ensuring that the life of humanity has failed to progress as far as its ideals would suggest. Having identified this problem—as well as shown that women bear responsibility for maintaining households while men control the home as a system of power—Gilman moves through such topics as domesticity, cooking, entertainment, and children in order to properly identify the highly gendered roles of each member of the home. Ultimately, Gilman argues that a progressive home will benefit not only each individual within the family unit, but the whole of society at large. The Home: Its Work and Influence is a powerful work of sociological thought by a leading reformer and feminist of her day. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Home: Its Work and Influence is a classic of American literature and nonfiction reimagined for modern readers.

Women and Economics (1898) is a sociological and economic study by American author and feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Inspired by her work as a social reformer and advocate for women’s suffrage, Gilman sought to write a work of nonfiction that explained the need to introduce women into the workforce while alleviating their responsibilities as wives and mothers. Women and Economics, arguably Gilman’s most important work, employs the theories of Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, and Thorstein Veblen to not only assess the damage done to women and human society by inequality, but to propose realistic ways of eliminating gender oppression while benefitting humanity at large. Observing that women in their roles as wives and mothers tend to work harder for longer hours than men while being excluded from the work force, Gilman proposes that the progress of human society depends upon the equality of men and women in all aspects of working and domestic life. She acknowledges the importance of the suffragist movement—in which she was a leading figure—while making the case for the economic equality of men and women in addition to the democratic equality sought by their activism. Ultimately, Gilman advocates for the professionalization of domestic work, suggesting that women should be allowed to enter the workforce while hiring others to care for and educate their children as well as perform the duties necessary for the upkeep of the home. Grounding her work in the dominant sociological, biological, and economic theories of the time, Gilman provided the intellectual arguments necessary for elevating the feminist cause from a popular movement to a true political force. Women and Economics is a powerful work of sociological thought by a leading reformer and feminist of her day. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Women and Economics is a classic of American literature and nonfiction reimagined for modern readers.

First appearing in 1892 The Yellow Wallpaper is a searing vision of a distinctively feminine form of madness and commands attention as an arresting tale of horror and a moving look into a woman’s mind. The story uncompromisingly thrusts the reader into the mind of the narrator. She is a woman forced, ostensibly for her own good, into a ‘rest cure’, a psychological straitjacket so constricting that she begins to unravel. Her mental dissolution is described with such fierce immediacy that The Yellow Wallpaper has been read and anthologized as a chilling horror tale. While it can easily be appreciated for its disorienting thrills, the story’s true resonance comes from its matter-of-fact portrayal of a woman pushed to the rim of sanity by society’s demands and her family’s utter inability to conceive of the fact that she cannot fit within their strictures. Shot through with unforgettable images of the yellow wallpaper, its shadowy depths and what seems to lurk there, The Yellow Wallpaper builds to a climax that combines the narrative impact of an Edgar Allan Poe story with a wrenching protest of the treatment of women. Unique and genre-bending, Gilman’s story was unrivaled in its era and its power endures undiminished today. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Yellow Wallpaper is both modern and readable.

The Yellow Wallpaper (original title: "The Yellow Wall-paper. A Story") is a short story by American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in January 1892 in The New England Magazine. It is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature, due to its illustration of the attitudes towards mental and physical health of women in the 19th century. Narrated in the first person, the story is a collection of journal entries written by a woman whose physician husband (John) has rented an old mansion for the summer. Forgoing other rooms in the house, the couple moves into the upstairs nursery. As a form of treatment, the unnamed woman is forbidden from working, and is encouraged to eat well and get plenty of air, so she can recuperate from what he calls a "temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency", a diagnosis common to women during that period.

First published serially in Gilman's magazine The Forerunner from 1909-1910, What Diantha Did is the story of Diantha Bell, a young woman who leaves her home and her fianc to start a housecleaning business. A resourceful heroine, Diantha quickly expands her business into an enterprise that includes a maid service, cooked food delivery service, a restaurant, and a hotel. By assigning a cash value to women's "invisible" work, providing a means for the well-being and moral uplift of working girls, and releasing middle-class and leisure-class women from the burden of conventional domestic chores, Diantha proves to her family and community the benefits of professionalized housekeeping. Charlotte Perkins Gilman is best known for "The Yellow Wallpaper," her famous 1892 tale of a woman's descent into madness, which is considered an important early work of American feminist literature due to its illustration of the attitudes toward the mental and physical health of women in the nineteenth century.
