Charlotte Smith's Emmeline, or, The Orphan of the Castle
In an exploration of the societal limitations for women regarding marriage and property in the eighteenth century, this gothic masterpiece is an early work of feminist fiction. Emmeline is orphaned and raised in a grand castle in the English countryside by her uncle, Lord Montreville. The legitimacy of Emmeline's birth cannot be proven and so she has no property to inherit and no social standing with which to find herself a husband and security. As she navigates the treacherous landscape of eighteenth-century England, she must unravel the secrets of her birth in a time of societal upheaval. This volume is part of the Mothers of the Macabre series, celebrating the gothic horror masterpieces of pioneering women writers who played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the genre. First published in 1788, this classic work of gothic fiction was Charlotte Smith's first novel. Against the backdrop of grand castles and lush landscapes, the volume delves into the complexities of class, gender, and the plight of the marginalised.

Emmeline Mowbray's history is shrouded in mystery. The common story is that she is the illegitimate daughter of a Lord, but there are very few corroborating documents. It is also said that both her parents are dead. She lives precariously alone, under the distant protection of an uncle whom she has never seen, at the old family seat, Mowbray Castle, in a remote part of Pembrokeshire. Parts of the castle have fallen into ruin, and her only companions are the small set of retainers who keep the estate ticking over, especially Mrs. Carey, the housekeeper, who loves her tenderly. Mrs. Carey's death, like a rock cast into a pool, precipitates a series of resounding changes, rippling through Emmeline's circumstances. She is finally introduced to her wealthy uncle, Lord Montreville, who is sometimes sympathetic and sometimes cold, most unaccountably. More importantly she meets his son, Lord Delamere, a wild rake, who quickly becomes infatuated with her undoubted youthful beauty. Delamere's ravenous attentions send the inexperienced Emmeline on a whirlwind of relocation, as she desperately avoids his all-out advances, again and again. She escapes to relations of Mrs. Carey initially, and there finds a staunch friend in another young woman, Mrs. Stafford, who is also struggling in great jeopardy, in her case with a disastrous marriage. Emmeline suffers, as she ventures, extraordinary advances and reverses of fate, and watches fascinatedly that of the people with whom she has begun to associate in her emergence into the wider milieu of London and the Continent. Some of them are wickedly humorous, some inveterately evil, and some emerge as her dearest allies in a dangerous world. She also meets Godolphin, a brilliant officer, whose love for her is as absolute as it is unspoken. Can Emmeline find a way through this puzzling and hazardous maze to the truth, about love, and about herself? Emmeline was Charlotte Smith's arresting first novel, first published in 1788. It was immediately popular, influencing, among others, Ann Radcliffe and Jane Austen.

I think this book will be fun and interesting for you. Portmanteaus like smog and Bennifer are a very current craze. Palindromes are words, phrases, sentences, numbers, and dates that read the same forwards and backwards. One chapter is devoted to how many of our last names came about.
Homonyms; Multiple-Meaning Words; Or One Reason English is Difficult to Learn
In this third book in a series to help ESL learners, I concentrate on the type of homonyms that are multiple-meaning words like "bat." There are thousands of them, but I chose the most interesting ones. I included the pronunciation in what I hope is an easy way to understand. This book is for people who already know some English and want to improve, as well as for people who just love the English language.
Confusing Words, Including Heteronyms; Or Why English is Difficult to Learn
This book was written for those who already have some knowledge of English and want to improve. It was written especially for ESL students and uses English words that are similar to the same word in Spanish whenever possible. It also tries to educate the reader about a variety of subjects whenever possible. The sentences are short and informal. "Confusing Words" includes when to use fewer and less, bring and take, may and can, lend and borrow, and farther and further, to list a few. It also lists some common homophones--words that sound alike. Heteronyms are words that look alike but may be pronounced differently, like present, record, and wound.

One reason the English language may seem difficult to learn is that there are so many words that sound alike but are spelled differently. This large group of multiple-meaning words is called homophones. The term "homophone" comes from the Greek words "homos" (same) and "phone" (sound). There are hundreds of homophones. This book lists those that may help English as a second language students the most in their study of the English language. Some words are not pronounced exactly the same way but are very similar. Studying homophones is a fun and interesting way to improve one's language skills. The reader might be amazed at how many homophones are used in everyday life.
