Whoa You mean there actually was a player that stole first base? Yes Catch the story about the zany guy who pulled that off in Stealing First and Other Old-Time Baseball Stories. Did you know that Hall-of-Famer Jackie Robinson was the star of a well-regarded Hollywood movie? The full story about #42's successful stint in front of the camera is found in the pages of this book. Learn about the All-Star career of the man who Lou Gehrig displaced as Yankees first baseman, a major crisis Major League Baseball faced in 1969, and the statistical reasons why the term "The Mendoza Line" is inaccurate and unfair. Stealing First and Other Old-Time Baseball Stories also includes a heart-felt salute to the major leaguers who lost their lives in war, a new look at the reasons behind the Phillies' historic late-season collapse in 1964, and an easy-to-understand essay that questions the importance of walks in a team's offensive strategy. The exciting baseball of the 1980s is fondly remembered with a tip-of-the-hate to the decade's high-achievers on terrible teams and there's also a big dose of baby-boomer nostalgia centered on a trip to one of baseball's historic ball parks. And that's not all Stealing First and Other Old-Time Baseball Stories is loaded with intelligent and fun diamond stories that both stats wonks and the casual fan will enjoy.

Sickened by the contamination of their water, their air, of the Earth itself, more and more people are coming to realize that it is capitalism that is, quite literally, killing them. It is now clearer than ever that capitalism is also degrading the Earth s ability to support other forms of life. Capitalism s imperative to make profit at all costs and expand without end is destabilizing Earth s climate, while increasing human misery and inequality on a planetary scale. Already, hundreds of millions of people are facing poverty in the midst of untold wealth, perpetual war, growing racism, and gender oppression. The need to organize for social and environmental reforms has never been greater. But crucial as reforms are, they cannot solve our intertwined ecological and social crises. Creating an Ecological Society reveals an overwhelmingly simple truth: Fighting for reforms is vital, but revolution is essential. Because it aims squarely at replacing capitalism with an ecologically sound and socially just society, Creating an Ecological Society is filled with revolutionary hope. Fred Magdoff and Chris Williams, who have devoted their lives to activism, Marxist analysis, and ecological science, provide informed, fascinating accounts of how a new world can be created from the ashes of the old. Their book shows that it is possible to envision and create a society that is genuinely democratic, equitable, and ecologically sustainable. And possible not one moment too soon for society to change fundamentally and be brought into harmony with nature."

"Behind the Teacher's Desk" by Chris Williams is the first book I've read from this author, and it was fantastic. Right away it felt different than the normal kind of book I read---- In fact, I'd have kind of a hard time categorizing it exactly as there are so many elements involved. I have never read another book where the heroine was a teacher-at least not where her work was any sort of focus, and I must say I liked it. I think it's so easy to take for granted what teachers do day in and day out. This novel shows us just what a jungle it can be, from out of control and even violent kids, crazy colleagues, and heartbreaking realities of her students' lives. Throw in some romance drama of her own and it's a wild ride from start to finish I loved reading it and will definitely be reading more from Chris Williams. (5 stars)

On a cold February night in 2007, a devoted father of four and a seventeen-year-old drunk driver both received life sentences. In one violent, devastating instant, both faced a drastically different and uncertain future. But as Chris Williams sat in his demolished vehicle, staring at the car that had just caused the death of his wife, his unborn baby, his nine-year-old daughter, and his eleven-year-old son, he committed to do something extraordinary: he would forgive. That decision launched Chris on a journey toward healing that impacted his family and friends, the young man who caused the accident, and an entire community a community that would face another deadly tragedy just a few days later. Chris's message of empowering forgiveness is an invitation to all who have suffered, however unjustly, to lay down their burdens and "let it go.""
