Walter Scott and the Historical Imagination
First published in 1979. This study explores the main critical issues that arise out of a modern reading of Scott’s work, and treats the major novels in detail. It tackles the questions of Scott’s place in literary history and his problems in pioneering the historical novel. As well as examining the greater novels of the Scottish series, the author also deals with the relation between historical fiction and reality, with reference to the Waverley Novels, and Scott’s own attitude to history. Also discussed are some of the possible reasons for Scott’s failure to depict conflicts in his contemporary society. This book would be of interest to students of literature.

In the ancient conversation between Western philosophy and Christian theology, powerful contemporary voices are arguing for monologue rather than dialogue. Instead of these two disciplines learning from and mutually informing each other, both philosophers and theologians are increasingly disconnected from, and thus unable to hear, what the other is saying, especially in Anglo-American scholarship. Some Christian philosophers are now found claiming methodological authority over doctrine, while some Christian theologians even deny that philosophy has its own integrity as a separate discipline. Against these trends, David Brown has argued over the past thirty years that philosophy and theology are both necessary in order to grapple with the reality of divine mystery and Christian faith. Neither discipline can be reduced to the other, and each has its own contribution to make for a full understanding of what Brown describes as 'a single vision' of God. In this volume, Brown addresses some key topics in philosophical theology, including the created order, experience and revelation, incarnation and redemption, and heaven and our communal destiny. Combining analytic clarity, doctrinal substance, and historical depth, this volume exemplifies Brown's project of truly integrating philosophy and theology. It thus provides an ideal introduction to this vital conversation for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as a connected argument of interest to specialists in both disciplines.

In this gripping sequel to David Brown's East End Boys, we follow Wolfe, Asher and their partner Billy Reid and their families through the Second World War. In the early days of the war, after enrolling in the Auxiliary Fire Brigade in East London, day by day they fight the raging fires as thousands of incendiaries and high explosives fall around them. Meanwhile their wives, Eva, Sarah and Esther, have joined the WVS, driving their van to badly bombed areas, serving sandwiches and hot tea to the fire-fighters, homeless and the various services, searching the rubble looking for survivors. In the skies above, Wolfe's eldest son Isaac flies his Spitfire through the fast, furious adrenalin pumping battle against the invading Luftwaffe. Later, Asher's eldest son Abraham becomes an officer and is sent to France where he and his men are part of the retreat to Dunkirk. Wolfe's other son Saul is badly beaten by a loan shark and card club owner Bull Burgess and his two cronies over a gambling debt. When Wolfe finds out that Burgess cheats at cards, he decides to do something about it. During the bombing, unscrupulous people take advantage property-owners are in the shelters by entering their homes and stealing from them. One such man is Spider Munro. But when he comes up against the East End Boys he meets his match. As a deserter in an army prison he has even more incentive for revenge against the three firemen. Through the following turbulent years the East End Boys and their children call on their unwavering faith in God to survive the horrors of a devastating war.

Justice reinvestment was introduced as a response to mass incarceration and racial disparity in the United States in 2003. This book examines justice reinvestment from its origins, its potential as a mechanism for winding back imprisonment rates, and its portability to Australia, the United Kingdom and beyond. The authors analyze the principles and processes of justice reinvestment, including the early neighborhood focus on 'million dollar blocks'. They further scrutinize the claims of evidence-based and data-driven policy, which have been used in the practical implementation strategies featured in bipartisan legislative criminal justice system reforms. This book takes a comparative approach to justice reinvestment by examining the differences in political, legal and cultural contexts between the United States and Australia in particular. It argues for a community-driven approach, originating in vulnerable Indigenous communities with high imprisonment rates, as part of a more general movement for Indigenous democracy. While supporting a social justice approach, the book confronts significantly the problematic features of the politics of locality and community, the process of criminal justice policy transfer, and rationalist conceptions of policy. It will be essential reading for scholars, students and practitioners of criminal justice and criminal law.
