The second edition of this practical book equips social science researchers to apply the latest Bayesian methodologies to their data analysis problems. It includes new chapters on model uncertainty, Bayesian variable selection and sparsity, and Bayesian workflow for statistical modeling. Clearly explaining frequentist and epistemic probability and prior distributions, the second edition emphasizes use of the open-source RStan software package. The text covers Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, Bayesian linear regression and generalized linear models, model evaluation and comparison, multilevel modeling, models for continuous and categorical latent variables, missing data, and more. Concepts are fully illustrated with worked-through examples from large-scale educational and social science databases, such as the Program for International Student Assessment and the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. Annotated RStan code appears in screened boxes; the companion website (www.guilford.com/kaplan-materials) provides data sets and code for the book's examples. New to This Edition *Utilizes the R interface to Stan--faster and more stable than previously available Bayesian software--for most of the applications discussed. *Coverage of Hamiltonian MC; Cromwell’s rule; Jeffreys' prior; the LKJ prior for correlation matrices; model evaluation and model comparison, with a critique of the Bayesian information criterion; variational Bayes as an alternative to Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling; and other new topics. *Chapters on Bayesian variable selection and sparsity, model uncertainty and model averaging, and Bayesian workflow for statistical modeling.

In twenty-four chapters David Kaplan offers ideas, opinions, theories, and facts for someone who wants to be a theater artist today in hopes of creating their own vision of theater-making, one informed by, and in the context of, theater history. This book explores what theater artists have done before and what they, inspired by history, might do next. A non-lineal theater history, Shakespeare Shamans, and Show Biz explores theater as a shaman's vision, as a storyteller's heritage, as religious propaganda, as a mirror of life, as a critique of society, as a prompt for hard laughter, as fantasy, and as national epic, with plays as different (and the same) as the writings of August Wilson, Gertrude Stein, Shakespeare, and people who never made it into history. Each chapter explores a particular theme: "The Middle Ages as a State of Mind," "Commedia dell'arte and Moli re," "Shakespeare-To Begin," "Euripides-Forever Modern," "Aeschylus-Writing in an Age of Certainty," "Sophocles and Aristotle-Defining Tragedy," "Greek Comedy," "Roman Theater," "Asian Classics and Rules" (Bunrakuken, Chikamatsu, Zeami), China-The Pear Garden and the Red Pear Garden," "Neoclassic Theater and Why There is Such a Thing," "Shakespeare's Classic," "Bad Boys Breaking the Rules" (Brecht, Ibsen, and Jarry), "Inside Outside" (Ibsen, Strindberg, Turgenev, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, Antoine), "Beyond Illusion" (Appia, Craig, Poel), "Melodrama and Popular Theater in America" (Aiken, Brice, Cohan, Stone, Tyler, Bert Williams), "American Classic: Eugene O'Neill and Martha Graham," "Expressionism to Epic" (Brecht, Meyerhold, O'Neill, Piscator, Treadwell), "American Agitprop: Overt and Disguised" (Adler, Clurman, Flanagan, Kazan, Le Gallienne, Miller, Odets, Robeson, Strasberg, Wilder), "Poetry of the Theater" (Artaud, Breton, Cocteau, Ionesco, Kharms, Stein), "Personal Mythology" (Genet, Lorca, Mishima, Strindberg), "Two Masters: Samuel Becket and Tennessee Williams," "Theater of Identity" (Baraka, Ensler, Kramer, Wilson), and "Missing from History" (Bonner, Forn s, Kennedy, Maeterlinck).

This new edition provides students content and scope of the subfields of geography, emphasizes its unifying themes, and provides the foundation for further work in their areas of interest.

With a New Afterword: THE INSIDE STORY OF WHAT WENT WRONG AFTER 2016! David Kaplan of CSN Chicago and ESPN Radio goes behind the scenes with the Cubs and their front office, walking the steps of their captivating rise to becoming 2016 World Series champions On October 12, 2011, Theo Epstein became the new Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations, flipping a switch on the lovable-loser franchise and initiating a plan to accomplish in Chicago what he'd succeeded in as general manager of the Boston Red Sox: ending a World Series drought. It would require a complete team tear-down and turnover, a new farm system foundation of young talent which Epstein and Cubs GM Jed Hoyer gradually added to with gutsy trades and timely signings. After years of rebuilding, Epstein's vision was realized in the form of one of the most exciting and talented teams in baseball, led by heavyweights like Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant, as well as visionaries like manager Joe Maddon. Then the challenge became making the success last. Featuring exclusive interviews with Epstein, owner Tom Ricketts, and other team insiders, this is the definitive account of modern baseball on the North Side.

This is VII in a series of ten volumes on the Theory in Anthropology. Originally published in 1968, this is a sourcebook that was created by the authors’ need for making accessible in a single volume a sample of those important pieces which are presently scattered in numerous publications, some of which are difficult for the student to obtain. Our second reason had to do with certain convictions they hold about the aims and methods of anthropology.

Over the past four decades, policy makers and stakeholders have struggled with the challenge of promoting industrial development in low and middle-income economies in general, and in sub-Saharan African (SSA) in particular. With the rise of the Asian Drivers (China and India) and their increase in demand for raw materials to fuel growth, the turn of the millennium saw a commodity price super-cycle emerge, benefiting a number of resource rich countries in SSA. Faced with the specter of the Resource Curse, this book examines an industrial pathway where countries can "Make the Most of Commodities." Bringing together ground-breaking research in the commodity sectors, this book uses case-studies to explore conduits for industrial development, focusing on backward and forward linkages, with policy advice for both governments and corporate sectors.

Nature learned long ago how useful proteins are as a diverse set of building blocks to make materials with very diverse properties. Spider webs, egg whites, hair follicles, and skeletal muscles are all largely protein. This book provides a glimpse into both nature's strategies for the design and produc tion of protein-based materials, and how scientists have been able to go beyond the constraints of natural materials to produce synthetic analogs with potentially wider ranges of properties. The work presented is very much the beginning of the story. Only recently has there been much progress in obtaining a molecular understanding of some of nature's com plex materials, and the mimicry or replacement of these by synthetic or genetically engineered variants is a field still in its infancy. Yet this book will serve as a useful introduction for those wishing to get started in what is sure to be an active and productive field throughout the 21st century. The authors represent a wide range of interests and expertise, and the topics chosen are comprehensive. Charles R. Cantor Center for Advanced Biotechnology Boston University Series Preface The properties of materials depend on the nature of the macromolecules, small molecules and inorganic components and the interfaces and interac tions between them. Polymer chemistry and physics, and inorganic phase structure and density are major factors that influence the performance of materials.
